Eastertide 2021

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  According to his great mercy,      he has caused us to be born again to a living hope       through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead I Peter 1:3

One of the great things about the church calendar is that it appropriately extends Christian celebrations over longer periods of time than we are accustomed. For example, instead of ending our Christmas feasting after a 24-hour mad rush, the Christmas season begins on Christmas Day and extends for twelve more days―hence the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. It takes more than one day to marvel at the wonder of God becoming one of us in order that he might save us.

Easter is similar. In the church calendar, Easter Sunday is not all there is to Easter. Rather, it inaugurates the beginning of the 7-week Easter season, which extends all the way until Pentecost Sunday on May 20th.

This is formative for us because the resurrection isn’t just something we celebrate for a day and then afterwards return back to our lives as they were before. Instead, the resurrection life that Jesus shares with his people has its beginning on Easter Sunday. From there forward, it stretches out into eternity. After the resurrection, life is never the same again.

In other words, Easter is to become a new way of life for us. We need lots of reminders and lots of practice living into this new reality―one day won’t do it justice. Hence, Easter becomes a 49-day period in the life of the church each year.

In this way, the season of Easter is a great gift to us. It helps us to practice and live out the truth that, in Christ, all things are being made new. So, this morning let us receive afresh the new life God has given to us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Let us worship!

It was one of the most overwhelming feelings I have ever had to hear it done so well, so beautifully, and so big. She took it and made it so much more that what it would ever have been.  Dolly Parton, on hearing Whitney Houston cover her song "I Will Always Love You"

John seems content to place indications of the universal conversion of the nations alongside references in equally universal terms to final judgment. But he is not making the kind of statements which need to be logically compatible to be valid. He is painting pictures which each portray a valid aspect of the truth. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Isaiah 41:1-13

Listen to me in silence, O coastlands; let the peoples renew their strength; let them approach, then let them speak; let us together draw near for judgment.   Who stirred up one from the east whom victory meets at every step? He gives up nations before him, so that he tramples kings underfoot; he makes them like dust with his sword, like driven stubble with his bow. He pursues them and passes on safely, by paths his feet have not trod. Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.   The coastlands have seen and are afraid; the ends of the earth tremble; they have drawn near and come. Everyone helps his neighbor and says to his brother, “Be strong!” The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.   But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from the grave     and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him     or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the way of the world     and failed to give him glory. Forgive us and raise us from sin,     that we may be your faithful people,     obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ,     who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish. You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all. For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Colossians 2:13-15

When you were dead in your sins     and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,     having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,     which stood against us and condemned us;     he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities,     he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 74

O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!   Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs. They were like those who swing axes in a forest of trees. And all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers. They set your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground. They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land.   We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever? Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them!

Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter. Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name. Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of your poor forever. Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name.   Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day! Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!

Share with us your visit and prayer requests.

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you.”

G O S P E L L E S S O N Love in the Ruins Revelation 15 & 16 Rev. John Haralson Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

[15:1] I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. [2] And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and its image and over the number of its name. They held harps given them by God [3] and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb:

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,     Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways,     King of the nations.

[4] Who will not fear you, Lord,     and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come     and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

[5] After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law—and it was opened. [6] Out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chests. [7] Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. [8] And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

[16:1] Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.” [2] So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. [3] The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing died that was in the sea. [4] The third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. [5] And I heard the angel in charge of the waters say,

[10] The fifth angel poured out his bowl on  the throne of the beast, and  its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish [11] and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds. [12] The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. [13] And I saw, coming out of the mouth of  the dragon and out of the mouth of  the beast and out of the mouth of  the false prophet, three  unclean spirits like frogs. [14] For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.  [15]  (“Behold,  I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on,  that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)  [16] And  they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. [17] The seventh angel poured out his bowl into  the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” [18] And there were  flashes of lightning, rumblings,  peals of thunder, and  a great earthquake  such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. [19] The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God  remembered  Babylon the great,  to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath.  [20] And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found.  [21]  And  great hailstones, about one hundred pounds  each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.

M U S I C A L O F F E R I N G Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending Lyrics below for reflection

Lo! He comes with clouds descending-- See the Lamb for sinners slain! Thousand, thousand saints attending Join to sing the glad refrain: Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign.

Every eye shall then behold You Robed in awesome majesty; Those who jeered at him and sold him, Pierced and nailed him to the tree, Shamed and grieving, Shamed and grieving, Shall their true Messiah see.

All the wounds of cross and passion still his glorious body bears; cause of endless exultation to his ransome worshipers. With what gladness, with what gladness, we shall see the Savior's scars!

Yes, Amen! Let all adore You High on your eternal throne; Crowns and empires fall before You-- Claim the kingdom for Your own: Come, Lord Jesus, Come, Lord Jesus, Everlasting Christ, come down!
