That’s A Tasty Burgerthe best of grilled goodness in the Chippewa Valley

COURT’N HOUSE The burgers at Court’n House Bar are the quintessential Wisconsin burger. They’re thin, buttery, greasy and salty. There’s nothing fancy about them – most only come with a handful of ingredients – but they don’t need much to make them good. Add in the atmosphere of the dark, wood-paneled bar and a pint of Spotted Cow and you’ve got a Midwestern experience in a nutshell.

Burger to get: Mel Burger: Mushroom, Olives, American & Swiss Cheese, Bacon

MILWAUKEE BURGER COMPANY The burgers at Milwaukee Burger are on the other end of the spectrum from Court’n House. The burgers are plump and juicy, but the real treat is what’s on top: basically anything you ask for. Their burgers are eclectic creations that throw in everything from eggs to cheese curds, building Dogwood-esque sandwiches you can barely wrap your mouth around. You can try out their finely crafted recipes, or suggest your own on their Facebook page, where they take a fan suggested creation and make it a menu item for the month.

Burger to get: Hangover Burger: Cheesy Hashbrowns, Fried Egg, American Cheese

MOGIE’S PUB If you like Court’n House for their simple creations and Milwaukee Burger for getting crazy, Mogie’s is the perfect middle. The bar and grill serves up perfectly cooked, thick burgers with fresh, crispy toppings – giving you that perfect crunch a burger should have. You can go simple with just their Pub Burger or go a little crazy if you’d like. And of course, there’s plenty of beer to wash it down with.

Burger to get: Cowboy Burger: BBQ Sauce, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese

A BURGER IS A BLANK CANVAS. The medium can be shaped and shifted into a small, thin, 69 cent McD’s snack or a grass-fed, organic, fancy entrée. So being the best burger joint in town has nothing to do with how much it costs or whether there’s a sous chef – every burger has its own personality. By The Numbersa few stats and tidbits we found interesting while we contacted every one of the Chippewa Valley’s restaurants and bars

1,356TAP HANDLES

When we update our listings we ask bars how many beers on tap they have. In 2014, we found 1,356 differ-ent tap lines in the Chippewa Valley, ranging from one in a bar to 40. Most bars also offer some specialty beers either on tap or in cans and bottles. Now that’s a lot of variety if you’re a big time beer drinker.

48%OF RESTAURANTS SERVE ALCOHOL

Whether it’s a full bar or a cooler of brews, just under half of Chippewa Valley restaurants have alcohol.

$7-$13AVERAGE ENTRÉE COST

An average of the bottom and top end of entrees in the Chippewa Valley puts most meals right around the $10 range. Looking for cheap? Try hot dog stands, fast food, and by-the-slice pizza joints. It’s no surprise the high-est-priced entrées are found in fine dining, Italian, and steakhouses.

Subway – the national sandwich chain – beat out Dairy Queen with 13 stores in the confines of the Chippewa Valley.

London Road in south Eau Claire consists of five dif-ferent Mexican restaurants in about seven blocks. We think that officially makes it a district.

Maybe it’s because our population is growing. Maybe our economy is getting better. Or maybe we’re just plain hungrier.

Milwaukee Burger Company 2620 E Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire • (715) 834-6503 • Though the name might suggest this restaurant is a regional import, it’s not – Milwaukee Burger is native to Eau Claire. The menu features lots of great burger combinations and all sorts of tasty drink concoctions. If no one combo is catching your eye, Milwaukee offers a “build your own” menu. Cheese is a staple ingredient here; their bestselling patty, the Famous Juicy Lucy, conceals a “molten core of cheese,” and their gigantic cheese curds are matched by none. The menu consists mainly of excellent breakfast plates, burgers, steaks, and salads as well as the delicious broasted chicken which will leave you smiling. The largest seller by far is the burger/malt combo, which highlights the hand-dipped malts made with local Olson’s ice cream, a loaded burger, and fries.
