You know the feeling. It's Saturday morning, you've eaten oatmeal and yogurt for breakfast all week.

Well, ban the bran. You need a pastry. We can help. ere are a number of places around here — some well-known, some

not — that have just the thing to go with that morning latte. e Scene sta bought bags of delicious items from a sampling of pastry shops and bakeries. Next, we did a blind tasting and jotted down comments from others in the o ce. Everyone seemed more than willing to sacri ce their waistlines for the cause.

Here is a selection of items and taster's comments. To try these pastries, and more, see our list of Eastside bakeries and pastry shops on this page.

It's o en said that "life's a beach." at’s still true here on the Eastside where the pricy waterfront is mostly privately owned. But from Mercer Island to Kirk-land, public waterfront parks and swim-ming exist. So grab your ip- ops and let's take a tour of some of our favorites.Luther Burbank Park: You can't say

Mercer Island and beach without thinking of this park. e 77-acre park sits on three-

quarters of a mile of Lake Washington waterfront. ere are lifeguards on duty from June 25 through Aug. 27 along with picnicing, a barbecue area and playground for kids. 2040 84th Ave. S.E.

Drive north into Bellevue and you'll nd lots of options.Chester eld Beach Park: Here's a sh-ing dock, play and picnic area, restrooms and swimming at this approximately .6 acre park just north of Beaux Arts Village.

2501 100th Ave. S.E.Chism Beach Park: is waterfront

park features a dock, picnic and play areas, restrooms, and large picnic ar-eas suitable for group events

or weddings. e 18-acre park is handi-capped accessible. 9600 S.E. 11th St.

Clyde Beach Park: is conveniently located beach is great for a lazy day by the water.

Ample parking, restrooms, boathouse, playground and a roped-o swimming area make this a family pleaser. 2 92nd Ave. N.E.

Enatai Beach Park: is beach park is partially hidden under

the I-90 Bridge, but it's de nitely worth looking for. e waterfront park features swimming and a spacious patio with sce-nic views overlooking Lake Washington. Take in the wildlife on a canoe or kayak trip through nearby Mercer Slough. 3519 108th Ave. S.E.Meydenbauer Beach Park: Located near the heart of Downtown Bellevue, this bustling beach o ers a playground, volleyball area and swimming area. e park is handicapped accessible. 419 98th Ave. N.E.Newcastle Beach Park: is is the

largest and most popular beach park in Bellevue with opportunities for swimming, sunbathing

and strolling on a nature trail. A 300-foot dock, colorful children’s play area and convenient picnic facilities make it a popular family destination. Parking is limited and carpooling is encouraged. 4400 Lake Washington Blvd. S.E.

In Kirkland, beach parks are dotted all along Lake Washington. Houghton Beach Park: is park has a

children's playground, swimming area, beach volleyball, shing area, picnic area, benches and an open lawn area. 5811 Lake Washington Blvd.Marina Park: This park in the heart

of the city's downtown has some-thing for just about every-one. There's picnic tables

(gas-fired barbecues are OK), an am-phitheater, fishing area, a boat launch and boat morrage. It's a perfect place to soak up the sun from one of the many benches. 25 Lakeshore Plaza Drive

Juanita Beach Park: is nearly 22 -acre park has a beach with an enclosed swimming area (with changing rooms and an outdoor

shower in summer), a children's play-ground and even beach volleyball. 9703 N.E. Juanita Drive

A nother two years has passed, which means its time for downtown Bellevue to trans-

form, once again, into an outdoor art gallery.

Bellwether 2014: Connect will bring in more than 30 sculptures to decorate a three-quarter mile walkway from City Hall to Downtown Park.

e City Arts Program has sponsored an outdoor sculpture exhibition every two years since 1992. It was rebooted and renamed Bellwether in 2010, when city o cials decided to turn the exhibit into a stepping stone toward a permanent down-town art walk.

e 2014 sculptures include works made of materials as sturdy as aluminum and as ephemeral as newspaper, and styles ranging from realist statues to abstract found materials work.

Elizabeth Gahan, an artist working out of Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood, creates colorful geometric “shards” she installs on existing structures. Amazon featured her installation “Graphic Plume” in its South Lake Union headquarters storefront windows during the winter. Over summer 2013, “Chromatic Crystal-lization” sat wrapped around the Westlake Park arch.

Gahan began building her sculptures out of corrugated plastic – the material o en used for election season yard signs – when she discovered the sturdy textile couldn’t be recycled. Print shops were more than willing to give her their extras and misprints.

In some of her work, she also works in repurposed advertisements, recycling their familiar parts to add to the overall aesthetic beauty of her sculptures.

“Chromatic Crystallization” and many

of Gahan’s other projects, create a speci c feeling about the structures they attach to. ough technically additive to the constructions, the installations create the sense that everyday surfaces are coming apart at the seams – like living inside a video game and tilting the camera just right to see the polygons clip. It’s not like seeing the world come apart in an unsettling way; it’s like seeing a previously unknown part of these mundane objects that has held everything together all along, sight unseen.

By contrast, many of Bill Vielehr’s metal-cast sculptures look to be coming

apart at the seams quite literally. Work like “Unconcealed Column” (pictured above right and appearing in Bellwether) adopt the appearance of building components in a state of ruin.

Geemon Xin Meng’s “Jim Green Portrait Sculpture” is a berglass statue of a former Vancouver city councillor – a man Meng has never met. e statue is an exploration of the personal projections artists make on their work, he wrote in a statement on the piece.

e city will host an open celebration for Bellwether at from 6-8 p.m. June 27 at Bellevie City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E.

BY DANIEL NASHComics Chris Distefano and Damien Lemon will come

to Parlor Live Comedy Club Bellevue for shows on “ e Code Tour,” from July 31 to Aug. 2.

Both men are longtime contributors to MTV’s “Guy Code,” a comedy reality series that explores the alleged unwritten code of conduct between men. ey also act as enforcers — and sometimes transgressors — of “the guy code” on spin-o series “Guy Court.” Distefano is a contributor to female-oriented spin-o “Girl Code” and Lemon appears on the game show“Hip Hop Squares.”

Distefano, 29, was born in Brooklyn, New York and has remained in the New York City metro area performing at clubs like Caroline’s, Gotham and e Comic Strip. And New York City has remained an in uential part of his material.

“I have no idea what my dad does for a living,” he said, opening a 2013 appearance on Letterman. “I’ve never known. He’s just a big, tough Italian dude from the Bronx. Never had a job and he’s always had money. Everything’s paid for in cash, always. College tuition: ‘Here, here’s a

$100,000 in a briefcase. Paid for two extra years ‘cause you’re an idiot.’”

e wise guy is also a smart guy: he earned a doctorate in physical therapy in 2010.

Lemon was raised in Ossining, N.Y., and performs throughout New York City. He made VIBE magazine’s list of “20 Comedians to Watch in 2014” for his style of “emotionless insight.”

at insight caught him in a comic’s worst nightmare at the Hot 97 2013 April Fool’s Day show at Madison Square Garden, where he was booed o stage for telling a joke about the love given to dead rappers. e same joke, which goes on to discuss the pleasures of breaking the news of celebrity deaths, had gotten big laughs a year earlier on an episode of “Russell Simmons Presents: e Ruckus.” But he kept a positive outlook on the incident when recalling it on the Power 105.1 Breakfast Club.

“ e cool thing about being booed is, immediately if you get o stage, they tell you ‘Everyone else has been booed,’” Lemon said. “‘Listen, don’t worry about it. ey booed Chappelle... they booed Martin Luther King.
