March has been a busy month with Spring fast approaching! Everyone is getting excited for the warmer weather and looking forward to watching the snow start to melt…AGAIN! We have also enjoyed the colorful and festive green decorations of St. Patrick’s Day. We have 20 residents at Eatonia Oasis Living. We bid farewell to Margaret Russell. She has moved to Heritage Manor in Kindersley. We will miss you, Margaret!

We have enjoyed our usual activities of

morning exercises and work bee, baking, playing the Wii, Balloon Badminton and Shuffleboard. We had a game of Guess the Word, as well. Ice-cream sundaes were enjoyed by all and we can’t wait until we can have them on the patio. Our weekly Bingos are still a hit; everyone scrounges up their quarters to come play! On March 15th the residents celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by trying their luck at the evening Bingo hosted by the Auxiliary. The Eatonia Health Care Auxiliary will be having one more Bingo this year—APRIL 18TH!! Mark it on your calendar!!

The ladies had a special treat this month. Leah Helman pampered them with manicures! The sparkly nail polish was very popular, and the sugar scrub was wonderful! Thank you, Leah! Thank you to Marie Smith, as well for organizing our Craft sessions. The residents are always proud of their bulletin board display!

World Day of Prayer was held at E.O.L. on March 2nd. Thank you to all that were involved in the planning of this to make the day so successful. Thank you to all the ladies and gentlemen from the various denominations who volunteer their time to provide our weekly church services.

This is very important to the residents, and the time you spend here is greatly appreciated.

This month we celebrated Berneice Wagner’s birthday. The Lutheran Church ladies hosted a fantastic party! They arranged for the Men’s Choir from the Lutheran Church in Kindersley to come sing! It was enjoyed by all!

Students from Eaton School’s Kindergarten and Grade 1 class, accompanied by Mrs. Follensbee, and the Grade 2 and 3 classes, accompanied by Mrs. Frison visited us to recite their poems for Choral Speaking in the Music Festival. Everyone truly enjoyed this! There were a few proud Grandmas and Great Grammas in the crowd! We were also entertained with an afternoon of music by Laura, granddaughter of Laviah Hayes. The residents always enjoy singing along to some of the oldies and reminiscing about past dances and get-togethers. Thank you for taking time to visit us, Laura.

The residents always like having visitors. They love to see children and pets. If anyone would like to drop in and spend a few minutes having coffee, participate in an activity or just to say hello, please contact Vicki or Cora at 967-2447. The residents would love it!

Our sincere gratitude goes out to all of you who have made a donation of any

kind to our facility. We appreciate it very much!

HAVE A HAPPY SPRING!!

The Eatonia Bullriding Committee

would like to thank Eatonia and

surrounding communities for their

The sport of bullriding comes to our

town through the hard work and

dedication of a committee who is not

only passionate about our community

but about bullriding itself. PBR Canada

(Professional BullRiders) brings us the

very best bullriders and bulls in our

sport.

Every year the top bullriders and bulls

come to our community to compete in

what is called the Canadian Touring Pro

Division. Some of our past bullriding

winners have gone on to become

Canadian PBR champions that

represent us all over the world.

Currently there are 4 Canadian

bullriders competing on the PBR Built

Ford Tough series in the United States.

All 4 of these Canadians have competed

here in Eatonia. Our Eatonia champion

from last year Matt Bohon from Cole

Comp, MO has also now qualified to

compete on the PBR Built Ford Tough

series. For all of the latest

The 2012 Lions Tour was a

memorable and incredible experience for the twenty-

eight Eaton School grade 7, 8 and 9 students who set

out for Moose Jaw and Regina on March 6th and 7th.

Our first stop was the Tunnels of Moose Jaw where

students stepped back in time as the stories of the

tunnels under Moose Jaw came alive in two interactive

theatrical tours. Students followed the Passage to

Fortune through a maze of underground spaces and

learned much about the history of Chinese immigrants

in Canada and the intolerable conditions they endured

to realize their dreams and succeed. On the second

tour, students entered the secret world of Al Capone

for a taste of the high life and learned how Moose Jaw

earned the nickname Little Chicago.

Next stop….Regina. Following excellent service and a

delicious meal at Boston Pizza, we arrived at the

Saskatchewan Science Centre for the Anatomy After

Hours Camp-In. We began our Camp-in experience

with an IMAX movie feature presentation of “Tornado

Alley-3D” in which storm chasers and researchers

raced to learn more about the weather phenomena of

tornadoes, taking viewers into gale force winds,

torrential rain, and unrelenting hail. Following the

movie, fun exploration of the exhibit floor was

enjoyed by all. Students checked out the different

displays: Ag-grow-land, the Science of Hockey,

Windyville, Critters, Wild! Saskatchewan, and

Discovery Junction. To study the cardiac system and

learn about our most important muscle – the heart –

students dissected pig hearts. This was met with

differing opinions: “interesting”, “cool” or “gross``.

The challenges of the 18.3m climbing wall was a

thrilling experience as students used their strength to

climb, belay, rappel and ascend. The program ended

with a “shocking” experiment to teach the kids more

about static electricity. After, everyone set up their

beds in the Science Centre, and it was lights out. The

next morning, we were off to Mosaic Stadium – Home

of the Saskatchewan Roughriders to meet #89 Chris

Getzlaf and experience some of the rich Roughrider

history and stadium atmosphere first-hand. It was very

exciting to meet Chris and he had lots of interesting

things to tell the students as he took us through the

stadium. We were able to check out both the visitors`

and Riders’ locker rooms, the film and meeting room,

and the Green and White Lounge. As well, we had the

opportunity to step out onto the playing field, take a

look from a player’s point of view, and imagine the

passion of Rider Fans. At the end of our tour, students

lined up to get Chris’s autograph and he gave them

some Rider tokens to remember their visit to Mosaic

Stadium.

The CBC TV/Radio Station is Canada’s national

public broadcaster. Here, students were taken through

the station and were exposed to television, radio,

internet services and programming such as news,

weather, arts and entertainment. In the recording

studio, a technician explained about mixing sound.

They also learned what it’s like to report on the ever

changing weather and they met Sheila Coles who

spoke to the students about her role as a news person.

Our final stop on the tour was 15 Wing Moose Jaw –

the principle site of flying training schools and the

world-famous Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Upon our

arrival, students were introduced to Eatonia’s own

Major Brian Bews. Pilots in training led students to

different parts of the base. In maintenance, our group

checked out the Hawk, the Harvard and the Snowbirds

aircraft. Being able to sit inside one of the snowbirds

was very cool. Students were shown simulations in

which pilots practiced ejecting from an aircraft in an

emergency or flying an aircraft while experiencing

Page 11: EATONIA NEWS BULLETIN 2012.pdf · APRIL 2012 1 EATONIA NEWS BULLETIN Published by the TOWN OF EATONIA Rates: 1/8 Page $17 ¼ Page $30 nd ½ Page $47 Full Page $86 Non-Profit Organizations

controlled emergencies. In the control tower, they

watched as different aircraft took off and landed under

the guidance of air traffic control.

The Grade 7, 8 and 9 students of Eaton loved the once-

in-a-lifetime experience of touring the Tunnels of

Moose Jaw, the Science Centre, Mosaic Stadium, CBC

TV/Radio, and 15 Wing Moose Jaw. Students’

comments about their tour included: “Fun!”

“Awesome,” “Very interesting,” “Amazing,” “Enjoyed

the experience,” and “Loved it”.

A special thank you to our bus driver, Chris Theaker,

for donating his time and getting us to Regina and

back safely. THANK YOU SO MUCH to the Lions

Club for sponsoring the entire tour and to those Lions

members who chaperoned. Eaton students are

extremely appreciative of the opportunity provided to

them by the Eatonia Lions Club which has continued

with this tradition that began in 1963.
