The Tour is over and now we can all go back to living life without being glued to the television each day. Perhaps now you can hone your skills in Pokemon Go. Or better yet, go for a bike ride!! Whatever it is that thrills you, I hope you are pursuing it! The heat and rain have made this a most interesting summer.

Rusty prepared stats through the end of June about mid July, thanks Kara May for emailing them out. You may not have noticed but your individual records are all attached to that listing. If your mileage is off, you can look at what has been recorded and get it corrected now. Thanks so much to Rusty for getting this together and out to everyone!

It is getting close to GPM time! The Great Pumpkin Metric is only 2 months away. Time to start thinking about which jobs you are going to volunteer for this year. We have lots of openings so please think about it. Some of the jobs include, Rest Stop worker – contact Diane Bies at [email protected], Sag Driver – contact Jay Vercelotti at [email protected], Registration volunteer – contact Rusty Yeager at [email protected], Pasta dinner helper cooker or server – contact Eugene Brouillard at [email protected], Swine barn set up and tear down and anything else in the day – contact Gary Gardner at [email protected], rest stop set up and trouble shooting – contact Mark Oliver at [email protected], parking or any job not listed above or just want to help wherever - contact Melissa Stepro at [email protected].

It does take a village to pull this great event off. You are guaranteed a fun time and you might even get to know some of the members you don’t know so well yet. This year’s theme is School Days so put on your thinking caps and start planning your area’s decor to go along with that concept. We have great artwork by Dave Yeley again that will be on our t-shirts and maybe even a jersey again this year.

Speaking of jerseys, the new style EBC jerseys are in. We have been delivering the ones ordered and have some inventory

leftover, which will be for sale at Dan’s Comp on S. Green River Rd. If you didn’t get yours ordered and want one, please go there to pick one up. The prices are still the same, no profit to the club. The “retro” style jerseys are coming soon. They will be delivered as soon as they arrive. We did

not buy any extras in this style. If you really want one, please let me know and I will start a list for our next order some time in the future. Please come to the monthly meeting this month. We have some new potential routes to unveil and discuss. It would help to have some input from a lot of people.

This is your chance to be heard for sure! We also have some ideas on ride schedule changes. Come around 6 for social time until the meeting starts at 6:30. The Pizza Chef has some good food on the menu and a nice salad bar.

Additionally, I hope everyone will come to my house on August 28 for an afternoon of fun. We will start with the Sunday afternoon bike ride, only about 24 miles long, from my house on a fun route, then plan to change into your swimsuits to soak or swim in the pool and enjoy a nice burger or hot dog and picnic type food while visiting with other riders and members of EBC. If the weather is not so agreeable we will just have food around 5 so please come anyway.

The pool is nice and comfortable to rinse all the salt off your body after a ride. No shower necessary before entering the pool. Bill Majors and Luan Greubel are helping to host this fun hosted ride. Please plan to stay to eat. The patio is in the shade in the afternoon and the pool is pretty shaded too. Let’s end summer with a picnic!

Happy Riding,

Diane

Saturday rides are all over the place again this month. We are trying something new by having a couple of Saturday morning rides each month that are joint rides with the Tour d’Eville group. Please come out and represent EBC and promote cycling in Evansville. Just watch the calendar for locations and times of morning and afternoon rides on Saturdays.

Wednesday night rides continue on the Greenway from the Shirley James Plaza. It is hard to find this parking lot. If you are on Fulton Avenue headed towards the river from the Lloyd Expressway, go under the expressway, pass the railroad sign but turn right in the drive just before the actual railroad tracks. This is tricky. We are usually at RiRa’s for $6 burger nights around 7:15 if you want to just join us for dinner. We are having a lot of fun on these evenings.

Sunday Aug. 7 The Strassenfest Ride is being held in Jasper this morning at 7:00 EDT. That is 6:00 CDT or Evansville time. The link for this ride is

http://www.jasperstrassenfest.org/Forms/Strassen-fest%20Bike%20ride%20entry%20form2016.pdf

Thursday Aug. 11 The monthly EBC meeting will be held at the Pizza Chef in Newburgh. Please come join us as we work on planning the GPM, discuss new po-tential routes and schedule changes, and other issues relating to your bike club. Social time is 6:00, meeting at 6:30. Come for dinner and bring your family.

Friday Aug. 12 EBC will be fitting helmets at the Evansville Otters Game. This is in conjunction with the St. Mary’s helmet give away before the ball game. Volunteers get game admission and some food and drink coupons and 20 miles credit. We need volunteers to be there by 5:30 Game starts at 7:00. Contact Paul Jensen to volunteer 812-204-4302.

Sunday Aug. 14 The Schweizer Fest Bicycle Tour is in Tell City at 8:00 AM. This is another fun bike ride. Read all about it at

http://www.active.com/tell-city-in/cycling/races/sch-weizer-fest-bicycle-tour-2016

Thursday Aug. 18 and Saturday Aug. 20 are the Club Century days this month. We will be riding the Folsomville Century this month at 7:00 from Crossroads Christian Church.

Sunday AUG. 28 Please notice there is a HOSTED RIDE on the calendar on Sunday, August 28. It will be a fun time to go for a bike ride and then take a little swim or just soak in the pool. We can all show off our amazing biker tans. The ride is to be held at Diane Bies’ home 624 Greengate Ct. We will start the ride at 3:30, ride for 24 miles then have food and fun in the back yard. Bring your swim suits to change into after the ride. If you can’t make the ride, please join in the food, fun and swimming at around 5:15 or 5:30. Questions or need for directions, call Diane 453-9966

Other reminders:At Olmstead please park on the I-69 side of the access road and PARK ON THE PAVEMENT NOT THE GRASS.

HELMETS ARE ALWAYS MANDATORY!!!

New Riders need to be ready to leave 15 minutes early and are encouraged to start with a “Come Ride With Us” Ride on Mon. or Wed. nights or Sun. afternoon.

OLD MEMBERS Watch for new members and make them feel welcome! Please remember the days when you were new. It means a lot to have someone befriend you and or ride with you. Let’s be a friendly club!

Who is credited with inventing the pedal bicycle?Kirkpatrick Macmillan was a Scottish blacksmith who is credited with the invention of the pedal bicycle.

He was born in 1812 in Dumfriesshire, the son of a black-smith. He did a variety of jobs as a young man, before settling into working with his father in 1824. At around that time he saw a hobbyhorse being ridden along a nearby road, and decided to make one for himself. Upon completion, he realised what a radical improvement it would be if he could propel it without putting his feet on the ground. Working at his smithy, he completed his new machine in around 1839. This first pedal bicycle was propelled by a horizon-tal reciprocating movement of the rider’s feet on the pedals. This movement was transmitted to cranks on the rear wheel by con-necting rods. The machine was extremely heavy and the physical effort required to ride it must have been considerable. Never-theless, Macmillan quickly mastered the art of riding it on the rough country roads, and was soon accustomed to making the

fourteen-mile journey to Dumfries in less than an hour. His next exploit was to ride the 68 miles into Glasgow in June 1842. The trip took him two days and he was fined five shillings for causing a slight injury to a small girl who ran across his path.

He never thought of patenting his invention or trying to make any money out of it, but others who saw it were not slow to realize its potential. Soon copies began to appear for sale. Gavin Dalzell of Lesmahagow copied his machine in 1846 and

passed on the details to so many people that for more than 50 years he was generally regarded as the inventor of the bicycle.Macmillan was quite unconcerned with the fuss his invention had prompted, preferring to enjoy the quiet country life to which he was accustomed. He died on 26 January 1878.Courtesy of Gaukartifact.com, Wikipedia.com and all others who contributed to this information and Creative Commons Atribution.
