KEENELAND – DAY TWELVE

ALATAWAY SWOOPS FOR EIGHT-TIME WINNER LADY SUSAN Lady Susan (Lot 4486), an eight-year-old mare by Pleasant Tap in foal to Point Of Entry, was sold to Adel Alataway for $42,000 to top the twelfth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

With one session remaining in the 13-day auction, Keeneland has sold 2,531 horses for $214,603,100, down slightly from $218,959,400 for 2,575 horses recorded at this point in the 2015 sale. The average of $84,790 is just below last year’s $85,033, while the median of $30,000 remains the same as 2015.

On Saturday, Keeneland sold 149 horses for $918,900, down 24.64% versus last year when 200 horses grossed $1,219,400. The average of $6,167 was just above last year’s $6,097. The median of $3,700 remained unchanged from 2015.

Consigned by Adena Springs, Lady Susan is out of the winning Regal Classic mare Georgiana Lake, who was Stakes-placed in Canada, and comes from the family of the Gr.1 winners Magazine and Relaxed Gesture. She sold with a no-guarantee season to Awesome Again.

She was one of 17 horses sold by Adena Springs for $189,700 to be the session’s leading consignor.

At $40,000, the second highest-price was the winning four-year-old Bertrando gelding Portando (Lot 4496), purchased by Three Diamonds Farm. Gainesway consigned Portando, who is a half-brother to the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris-second Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid), out of the Listed Tipperary Stakes winner Porto Marmay (Choisir), from the family of the Hong Kong Champion Miler River Verdon (Be My Native).

Day. He is a much better racehorse than this time last year. He is much more professional and he will be spot on for the big day. I’m looking forward to it.”

Beauty Only was bred by Massimo Parri and is a €72,000 graduate of the ITS Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to this year’s Gr.2 Derby Italiano runner-up Dee Dee D’Or (Zebedee), out of the placed Ali-Royal mare Goldendale, a half-sister to the multiple Italian Gr.3 winner Late Parade (Astronef) and the dual US Graded Stakes winner Sweet Ludy (Be My Guest).

Not Listenin’tome, an Australian-bred son of Dylan Thomas, was ridden prominently throughout the 1200m of the Gr.2 Jockey Club Sprint and he held off the fast-finishing pair Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) and the triple Gr.1-winning sprinter Aerovelocity (Pins) by half a length and a length and a quarter for his fifth and biggest Hong Kong victory.

His trainer John Moore, said: “Everything fell into place today. He came into the race in fine form, but he was the forgotten horse.”

Hong Kong’s highest-rated horse of all time, Able Friend (Shamardal), made his long-awaited return to the racetrack after

RACING REVIEWHONG KONG

TRAINER YIP HAS A SECRET WEAPON FOR THE HONG KONG CUPThe three Gr.2 trials for the Hong Kong international races on 11th December were all won by produce of current or former Coolmore sires.

The former William Muir-trained Secret Weapon started the ball rolling with an impressive win in the Gr.2 Jockey Club Cup over 2000m. The son of Choisir, who is now based permanently at Coolmore Australia, showed a terrific late turn of foot to sweep past his rivals in the final 200m and came home a length and a half and a neck in front of Flame Hero (Savabeel) and the veteran Military Attack (Oratorio). This was the six-year-old’s sixth and biggest win in Hong Kong, where he also won the HK-Gr.3 Centenary Vase in February.

He was ridden to victory yesterday by Nash Rawiller, who commented: “Everyone has seen this horse at his best and, when he can get that uninterrupted run and have an opportunity to let go like that, he is a very high-class horse. That’s what he proved today.”

Secret Weapon was bred by Carmel Stud and is out of the placed Montjeu mare Just Devine, who has also produced the dual Listed winner Code Red (Bahamian Bounty) and the Listed-placed End Of Line (Pastoral Pursuits). The mare is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix du Lys winner Airmail Special (Peintre Celebre) and the family also includes the 2004 Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Torrestrella (Orpen).

The Gr.2 Jockey Club Mile was won by the Irish-bred Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor), who had been a Gr.3 winner in Italy under his original name of Gentleman Only. He too finished with a late flourish to get home in a three-way photo finish from Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor) and Sun Jewellery (Snitzel). His five previous victories in Hong Kong include the 2015 HK-Gr.1 Hong Kong Classic Mile and April’s HK-Gr.2 Chairman’s Trophy.

The winner is trained by Tony Cruz, who said afterwards: “Today I expected him to win. I believe he can be a big player on International

Carmel Stud, who bred yesterday’s Gr.2 winner Secret Weapon, are consigning this Dutch Art colt as Lot 99 at Tattersalls today. He is out of a juvenile winner by Exceed And Excel and his second dam is the Gr.3 winner Secret History.

of the plan. It was just the way things worked out, so I’m not sure where I’m going to go next with him. I imagine we will be stepping up. I just haven’t got a race picked out for him yet.

“He was very exuberant today. He’s very brave and I was hoping that his jumping wasn’t going to take too much out of him but he put the other horses under pressure with his jumping.”

The ‘sub’ comment referred to the fact that Mullins also had Annie Power, Faugheen and Vroum Vroum Mag in mind for this race, but was not 100% happy with any of them last week, so Nichols Canyon lined up instead.

The Andrea and Graham Wylie-owned gelding beat Faugheen in this race twelve months ago en route to a win in the Gr.1 Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown just after Christmas, but had had to settle for third in four consecutive races since – the Gr.1 Irish Champion Hurdle, Gr.1 Champion Hurdle, Gr.1 Aintree Hurdle and May’s Gr.1 Iroquois Hurdle in the US.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock and sold for 48,000gns at Tattersalls as a yearling, he was a dual Listed winner and second in the Gr.3 St Simon Stakes on the Flat before switching to obstacles. He is the first foal of an unraced Montjeu half-sister to Gr.3 winner Nideeb (Exceed And Excel) and has as his third dam the Listed winner and successful producer Lucayan Princess (High Line), dam of the Group winners Luso (Salse), Warrsan (Caerleon), Needle Gun (Sure Blade) and Cloud Castle (In The Wings), the latter the grandam of the recent Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust. Last year’s dual French Classic winner Avenir Certain (Le Havre) is another of Lucayan Princess’s descendents.

eleven months on the sidelines with a tendon injury and Moore was visibly happy with his two and a quarter-length fourth.

“He went super,” Moore added. “Tommy [Berry, jockey] said he bottomed out at the 150m mark, but he was really thrilled about the run. Considering the amount of time he has had off, though, you have to accept that, and I am sure he’ll be a much fitter horse come International Day.”

CANYON IMPRESSES WITH SECOND MORGIANA HURDLE VICTORYYesterday’s Punchestown meeting included three Graded contests, headed by the Gr.1 Morgiana Hurdle. Run in very foggy conditions, the two-mile contest had just five runners, but an odds-on favourite in the shape of Nichols Canyon (Authorized), one of three in the field trained by Willie Mullins. Ridden by stable jockey Ruby Walsh, the six-year-old set out to make all and did so in style, pulling clear of this spring’s dual Gr.1 winner Jer’s Girl (Jeremy) and March’s Gr.1 Triumph Hurdle winner Ivanovich Gorbatov (Montjeu) for his seventh top-level success.

The successful trainer commented: “I’m very pleased. He had to come in as a sub, but he did it nicely. Ruby said they went a very good gallop the whole way and his stamina just won out. This wasn’t part

Stud, who recorded a 1–3–4. The favourite was the stud’s Noel Meade-trained Disko (Martaline), who had won a beginners’ chase here last month, but he was never in contention and could only stay on for third. Gigginstown’s A Toi Phil (Day Flight), winner of a beginners’ chase at Down Royal three weeks ago, made stealthy progress to get to the front before the last and he eased clear on the run-in to beat his Gordon Elliott-trained stablemate Jetstream Jack (Beneficial) by seven lengths.

“When he got the gap going to the second last he quickened through it and was gone,” said Elliott afterwards. “The Drinmore will be the plan now, all being well. I’d say he just doesn’t want bottomless heavy ground and Ruby said that was as soft as he would want it.”

The winner was bred in France by vet Phillippe Legault and is the fourth foal of the twice-raced Lucidrile (Beyssac). She is one of three foals produced by Aramo (Caramo), an unraced half-sister to three winners, including the triple Graded-placed chaser Joly Bey (Beyssac).

CRADDOCKSTOWN NOVICE CHASEThere were only five runners in the first Gr.2 contest at Punchestown, three of them owned by Gigginstown House Stud and three trained by Henry de Bromhead, and it was the latter who recorded a 1–2–3 in the two-mile contest, while the stud’s runners finished 1–3–4.

Last season’s Gr.1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle winner Identity Thief (Kayf Tara) had made an impressive start to his chasing career here a month ago and he took the step up in class with ease, winning with more in hand than the one-length and three-length margins to Ordinary World (Milan) and Attribution (Alhaarth) would suggest.

“Of what we could see of it, he looked good!” joked the successful trainer. “I think the 2m1f at Leopardstown on St Stephen’s Day [Boxing Day] is the obvious race for him. We’ve always hoped he would be a very good chaser and he is very quick. Two miles over fences like that is his forte.”

A dual graduate of the Tattersalls Ireland sales ring, most recently when knocked down for €40,000 to Gordon Elliott as a three-year-old, the Cathal Ennis-bred Identity Thief is a half-brother to the Listed-placed hurdler Oscarteea (Oscar) and is out of a Flemensfirth half-sister to the Gr.3-winning chaser Arteea (Oscar). Further back in the family are the Graded-winning siblings Merry People, Merry Masquerade and Over The Bar.

Flying home with a storming late run, Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) just got the better of his long-priced stable companion Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor) and the favourite Sun Jewellery (Snitzel) to claim his fifth victory in Hong Kong and his first at open Group level since he landed the Gr.3 Premio Guido Berardelli at Capannelle as a two-year-old.

The fog had descended again by the time the five runners went out for the feature race and it was the odds-on Nichols Canyon (Authorized) who made the running from Jer’s Girl (Jeremy). They remained 1–2 throughout as the leader extended his advantage over the last three flights and won impressively, eased down.

This was the seventh Gr.1 victory for the six-year-old, and his eighth over hurdles from 14 starts. He also won three times, including twice in Listed company, from ten outings on the Flat.

A horse with a Classic Flat pedigree, he is the first foal out of the unraced Zam Zoom (Dalakhani), whose second Bright Approach (New Approach) only raced five times, but was a Listed-placed winner, and whose third Zamani (Teofilo) won at three last year. Zam Zoom is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Winter Derby winner Nideeb (Exceed And Excel) and May’s Gr.3 Henry II Stakes runner-up Suegioo (Manduro), and they are among the four foals produced by the unraced Mantesera. That daughter of In The Wings is a full-sister to the Gr.3 winner and twice Gr.1-placed Cloud Castle, dam of Gr.3 winner Queen’s Best (herself the dam of the recent Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust) and Listed winner Reverie Solitaire. The third dam, Listed victrix Lucayan Princess (High Line), is also responsible for the multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Luso (Salse), multiple Gr.1 winner Warrsan (Caerleon), Gr.2 winner and sire Needle Gun (Sure Blade) and the Listed-placed Luana (Shaadi; dam of Gr.3 winners Hattan and Tastahil). Another daughter of Lucayan Princess, the lightly-raced Lunda (Soviet Star), is the dam of Gr.3 winner Blue Monday and

Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) was quickly away and made the running, tracked by Neorealism (Neo Universe), and he held on by a head from the fast-finishing Isla Bonita (Fuji Kiseki), who overtook Neorealism for second close home. The winner may have been lucky to keep the race after drifting off the rail in the closing stages, intimidating Neorealism and causing a knock-on effect to several rivals just behind.

Mikki Isle had won six of his first eight starts, including the 2014 Gr.1 NHK Mile Cup and three other Group races, but has been running over shorter distances since the summer of 2015. He won a Hanshin Gr.3 over 1400m and finished second in the Gr.1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen and Gr.1 Sprinters Stakes over 1200m in his three previous outings this year.

He is the second foal out of the dual Japanese winner Star Isle (Rock Of Gibraltar), who has also produced the older Yozorani Negaio (Admire Moon), three-year-old Danon Spark (Victoire Pisa) and two-year-old Taisei Starry (Manhattan Cafe), who have all won. The second dam, Isle De France (Nureyev), won the Gr.3 Prix Minerve and was later a Gr.3 winner in the US, and is a half-sister to the multiple Japanese Group winner Diamond Biko (Sunday Silence) and to the dam of the Gr.1 Ashland Stakes winner Lilacs And Lace. The third dam is the four-time US Gr.1 winner Stella Madrid (Alydar), a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Tis Juliet.
