At the end of this term, we will be hosting a Gumbaynggirr experience day with a focus on language and bush tucker. The day will be held on Wednesday 25 th June, which is the last week of Term 2. This will be the first ‘experience day’ for 2014, with more planned throughout the remainder of the year. We would encourage community members and friends to join us for the day. We will prepare a bush tucker lunch and learn about the Gumbaynggirr language. Craft with Tanya Ebor Public School is blessed with support from parents and community members. Next week, we will begin craft sessions with Tanya Bird. Tanya has offered to conduct regular sessions with our students, allowing them to further develop their creativity and at the same time, fine tune their fine motor skills. A big thank you to Tanya, we can’t wait to start!! Walk Safely to School Day Friday 23 rd May was Walk Safely to School Day. This year, instead of our students walking part of the way to school, we decided to take a walk along the Ebor Nature Trail and invite parents and friends to join us. We enjoyed a 30 minute walk at the start of the day. We would like to remind everyone about the importance of road safety and obeying road rules. Children should always be accompanied by an older person when walking near or crossing roads. Page 1

Our students stick to the road rules

Snow Gums at Thalgarrah Snow Gums is an integrated curriculum design project that is driven by the Highlands Network of Schools, which includes Bald Blair, Ben Lomond, Black Mountain, Chandler and Ebor Public Schools. The focus of the project is to provide an opportunity and structure for small groups of schools to engage in action learning. It enhances quality collaboration and deep learner centred pedagogical understanding with the implementation of the NSW syllabuses. This week, schools gathered at Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre for the first workshop. Students in Kinder to Year 2 were led by Thalgarrah Principal, Mat McKenzie on an environmental adventure which included identifying animals in the bush, fishing with a net and making bush perfume. Students in Year 3 to Year 6 worked in stage groups to produce a television news bulletin. Students learnt skills such as developing a script and preparing a story-board for their presentation. Each group decided on a news item to report on and then set about producing their item. The groups were provided with video cameras and given instruction on how to film. The students learnt about the different types of camera shots, such as a mid-shot and a close-up, as well as learning about camera angles and how the light can affect the footage. The Year 3 to 6 students camped at Thalgarrah and continued their productions the next day.

Gone Fishing

“Yesterday, 21st May, we went to Thalgarrah. We went walking in the bush. We made bush perfume. We had a pizza for lunch and after lunch, I saw more animals. It was the best day ever in my life.”

Ellen, Year 2

Kaylah, Keeley & Maddi

“Yesterday, I went to Thalgarrah. When we got there we had fruit break. Then I went for a bush walk. I made stinky perfume. Then we had lunch. Next, we went fishing and I caught some little fish. Mr McKenzie showed us a big snake, a little snake, a stick insect and a bearded dragon. I had a good day.”

Hezekiah, Kindergarten

“Mr McKenzie brought out a carpet python to show us and we were able to feel the skin of the python. It felt smooth and squishy.”
