back to Africa was to get a reconnec-tionwiththeburialplaceofmyumbil-ical cord”.

He saw the unity of Africans as asolution to this exclusionof natives inthe political, economic and social af-fairs of their own land, and thusembarked on a national campaignwhere he effectively mobilised tradi-tional leaders, African academics, intellectuals and professionalsaround this idea of his of forming aSouth African Native NationalCongress. The 31–year–old Seme’stour-de-force in succeeding to uniteunder one roof all the tribes of South-ern Africa: Zulu, Tonga, Thembu,Pedi,Swazietc, whoagreedwithhim, that the anti–tribal and unifyingCongress should be formed and weknowforcertain thatSemewasdoingsomethingthatnootherhumanbeingbefore had done in a colonial SouthAfrica.

Pixley then decides to appeal tosomeoneandsays:“Uncle,I’mcultur-ally still too young to lead thesenations as president and the Zuluculture anyway demands that thehunter boy must hand over his firstpasserine kill to seniors (“Inyoni

ishayelwa abakhulu”) and I have gotthis bird in the hand called the SouthAfrican Native National Congress foryou, uncle”.

What we as young Africans inSouth Africa today must learn fromthispartofthePixleySemestory,first-ly, is the reality that quality educationplays a fundamental role in the life ofyoung Africans that intend on realis-ing their full potential.

We also learn from Seme’s mostsignificant achievement, that theunity of Africans has the potential toachieve everything. His refusal to bea judge in a system that deliberatelyeconomically marginalises his ownpeople, yet creates an exception forhim in those years, elucidates hisprincipled posturewhichwe certain-ly, as young Africans, must emulate.

Pixley ka Seme was young whenhe founded the ANC, however heexhibits impeccable humility andselflessnessinthewakeofmonumen-tal power, by his gesture to his uncleJohnLangalibaleleDube tobe found-ing president instead of him. Highlyeducated as he was, he was able tomaintain his respect for his culture, his people and elders for he under-

stood very clearly that self-determi-nation is married with self-knowl-edge.

TheimmensepotentialamongtheyouthofSouthAfricawillonlybereal-ised through quality education andeconomic liberation. The two areintertwined, interdependent and cannever be separated!

The plight of young Africans inSouthAfricacalls forurgentandradi-cal action that will see Africans own, manage and control the economy oftheir native land. This and more canbe achieved if only we, the youth ofthis country, could follow in the foot-stepsofour forefatherswhogatheredin 1912 to put aside our differencesand unite under the banner ofcomplete liberation, which is cen-tered on economic freedom.

As the youth we are left with thetaskof ensuring thata completely lib-eratedAfricanpeopleasenvisagedbySeme, andothers after him, becomesareality inour lifetime.Weall need tosimply declare that ‘We are Africans, and we set our pride in our raceagainst a hostile public opinion.

VOX POP>> ON VAVI DECLINING PARLIAMENTARY SEAT“I am honoured by the ANC members’ confidence in me, demonstrated through nomination to serve as an MP, but I haveto respectfully decline”.This was a tweet by suspended Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi, after it was reported that ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe had urged Vavi to join parliament as an MP. Mantashewas reported to have made this proposal at a funeral in the Eastern Cape two weeks ago.

“Vavi was not clever bydeclining the position thatwas given to him byMantashe. By him refusing,it shows that there aredivisions in the alliance. We are heading for theelections this year and theleast he could have donewas to accept the positionand be in parliament”.

ThandoluhleNgcobo

“He did good by notaccepting the position. Ithink it was bad timingfor the ANC to make sucha proposal. They shouldhave made the proposal along time ago. The question that people shouldbe asking themselves is,why are they offering himthe position now? It wasbad timing and he wasbrave for declining”.

Senzo Msomi

“The man has a case thatis still pending against himand he should focus onthat before jumping toanother position. Youcannot offer a position toa person who has adisciplinary hearing onpause. What is going tohappen with his currentcase if he is now offereda position in parliament?Again, Cosatu was wrongto fire Vavi”.

AndileMbokazi

“Cosatu as an allianceneeds solutions on mattersthat are taking place within the alliance. We areseeing a lot of divisionsand it’s high time theyresolved the issues. Wehave elections this yearand it is important thatthe issues are sorted out. Isupport Vavi’s decision fornot taking up the MPposition he was offered bythe party”.

NhlanhlaNgwenya

“Right now, Vavi needs tofocus on his suspension asthe secretary general ofCosatu. Other things willfollow after he is donewith his case. It was notbrave for the ANC tomake that offer. It’s likethey are buying him sincethere will be elections thisyear. If they wanted tooffer him a position, theyshould have done it along time ago. Why now?”

KWAZULU–Natalmotorists willagain have to dig deep intotheir pockets following a

provincial cabinet decision to changeall vehicle number plates to “KZN”registrations.

After years of fiercely-debatedproposals to replace town-basedreg-istrations like “ND” and “NP” in linewith Gauteng and other provinces,Department of Transport spokesper-sonKwaneleNcalane confirmed thatthe provincial cabinet had approvedthe department’s plan to requiremotorists to acquire new, provincialplates.

Ncalane said the current, resi-dence-based plates — denotingphrases like “Natal, Durban”—were“colonial”, subject to abuse, difficultfor police to trace and running out of

digits.While details of the change-over

are yet to be announced, it is under-stood the new plates are likely to bealuminium — not plastic — and in-clude a provincial logo, in the samewaythatEasternCapemotoristshaveanelephantandLimpopoplateshavea baobab image.

However, at least one oppositionparty expressed dismay at the deci-sion. DA transport spokespersonRadley Keys said the departmentshouldinsteadfocusonreducingtraf-fic accidents: “There is no need forthis change. They are being utterlybizarre because our current systemworks fine. With this process, everyvehicle owner will be affected, whilethose in licensing businesses will besmiling with fat bank balances”.

TheWesternCapeistheonlyotherprovince touse residence–based reg-istrations — and Siphesihle Dube,

spokesperson for its Department ofTransport on Sunday revealed thatthe days of the famed CA registrationwere numbered too.

“Initial indications show that theWestern Cape will soon be runningout of CA registration plates. Nowweneed toconvert toastandardisedanduniform registration plates system”.

Chief executive of the South Afri-can Number Plate Association, Zuri-ka Louw, said the change wouldimprove security and car identifica-tion — especially after severe acci-dents.

“I understand that KZN wantstheir plates to be aluminium, whichcannot be copied or burnt in the caseof accident”.

Ncalane said: “There are severalbusinesses selling fake plates whichproves to be difficult for the depart-ment to trace them. Also in terms ofsafety we need these standardised

plates,” he said.Ncalanesaid theKZNdepartment

is now seeking permission from thenational Department of Transport todevelop an operational plan for theroll-out, and, thereafter, to amendlegislation.

Saying that registrations should“reflect the change to the democraticdispensation”, headded: “In termsofsafety on our roads, we need stand-ardised plates. Because the nationaldepartmentisthecustodianofvehicleplates, wewrotealetterrequestinganapprovalandamendment to the roadtraffic act”.

Ncalane could not reveal precisefiguresofwhatitwouldcostmotoriststohave their plates replaced.Howev-er,registrationcostscurrentlyexceedR500,whilebasicnumberplates costat least R150 per set.

The plan has been greeted withmixed feelings by motorists.

Joel Moodley complained therewas “nothing wrong” with his exist-ing plates.

“Mymainworry is that I will haveto pay for this. I believe the govern-ment should issue registrations forfree for once,” said Moodley.

But Sebastian Atkinson said thechange could help unite the people ofSouth Africa’s most populous prov-ince.

“It might be a good move to uniteusaspeople.Whywereweseparatedin the first place? It’s nice to identifyyour vehicle from your provincewhen you’re outside it. But the costimplication will be a serious factorhere,” said Atkinson.

Automobile Association spokes-personGraemeScala said therewereclear safety benefits to the change.

“It might help in data collection tohaveplatesthatreflectaprovince,”hesaid. WR

Komphela is more thanjust a football coach

BETHLEHEM, or is it QwaQwa, nev-ertheless their loss is Pietermaritz-burg’s gain.

Steve Komphela is good news foryoungpeople in this town.He ismorethan just a football coach. I hope histight scheduleallowshimtime tovisitsome of our schools. Our boys andgirls can only become better peoplethrough interacting with the likes ofSteve.

Thanks to Farook Kadodia for

bringingthisguytooursleepydorpie. We hope this appointment mightawaken the sleeping giant amongstmany of our youngsters.

We can only wish him luck duringthe last lapof thePSLrace. It isalwaysa challenge to takeover teamsduringthis part of a season. I think he is in-heriting a squad of very good people.

Maritzburg United has been luckyin the last few years to have veryhumble and dedicated footballers.

Professional football isa job,support-ers are customers and football fieldsare players’ and coaches’ offices.

I thinkUnited’splayersaregettingsomeone that isnot only interested inresults. Steve is the kind of personwho cares about others. SouthAfricais yearning for football coaches whoserve the game more than them-selves. In fact, the culture of profitsbefore service needs to change if weare to succeed as a nation.

Morally, it is wrong for a profes-sional coach to also serve as an agentfor players. This compromises hisprofessionalism in the execution ofhis duties.

Generally, I also have doubts ifSouth African football will thriveunder the present conditions. It isimportant that the game serve play-ers instead of officials.

Presently, football at club levelservesofficialsmorethantheplayers.

We do things to suit officials not theplayers. I think over and above thetrainingof coaches, football adminis-trators in South Africa need a crashcourse on technical matters.

Football ismainlyanactivitywith-in the four white lines. The reality isthat many of the football officialsnever played this game. Is it possibleto have technically informed deci-sions then? Unzima lomthwalo!
