LESS fortunate residents in Pietermaritz-burg received an early Christmas whenMaritzburg United embarked on a
R20 000 Share For Good food bucketdistribution last week.
The club partnered with the MsunduziMunicipality andShoprite,whichdonated200food buckets.
They visited Ezinketheni area, nearCopesvillewheretheydistributedthe parcelstoat least100residentsbefore proceeding
toEnkululeko,where 50peoplewere benefici-aries.
The remaining 50 buckets were issued atHarry Gwala Stadium during the MamelodiSundowns and Maritzburg United game.
United’s marketing and communicationsmanager Brian Zuma said gratitude waswrittenon the facesof residentswhoburst intosong in appreciation.
“We are very excited to be part of this nobleinitiative. Let us all inspire other less fortunateSouth Africans and put smiles on their faces,”Zuma said.

WITH the holiday season in fullswing, the Department ofHealth in KwaZulu-Natal
says it’s all systems go with regards toproviding emergency services duringthis period.
In a bid to prepare for the influx ofroad usage and traffic congestionduring this season, the departmentlastweek launchedanalphaoperationsfestive season safety campaign,aimed at providing rapid and effectiveresponse to all incidents withinthe province and its immediateboarders.
KZN Department of HealthspokespersonDesmondMothasaid theoperation is also aimed at increasingthe visibility of EMRS services byallocating them at strategic pointson major routes, and strengtheningcollaboration with road trafficinspectorate tominimize deaths on theroads.
“As we all know, the Decembermonth marks the beginning of thefestive season and all major routesare expected to experience a majorinflux of traffic congestion.
“That situation, inevitably bringsabout increased accidents and traumavictims. Our Emergency MedicalRescueServicesduringthis timearethe
ones we all depend upon to be there onthe spot, to provide assistance withinthat golden hour that the accident hashappened.
“This year, we are exceptionallyprepared for any carnage of disasterwith our revolutionary aero medicalnight vision goggles system for ourhelicopter emergency services. Seven
60 sitter disaster buses that havestretches have also been added.
“All our healthcare institutions arealso readywithqualifiedpersonnelandequipment to deal with all traumacases.”
The EMRS will be stationed atvariousareas in theprovince, includingthe N3 - New England Road.

MOREthan300wastepickerstook to the streets recently,marching to the City Hall
demanding that the MsunduziMunicipality give them answersregarding theR21million fundingofthematerialsrecyclingfacility(MRF)at the New England Road Landfillsite.
Spokesperson for the SouthAfrican Waste Pickers’ Association(SAWPA), Simon Mbatha, said thatthey have waited three years for theconstruction of theMRFbut nothinghas been concluded.
Mbatha said that the servicedelivery march was targeted at theprovincial Department ofCooperative Governance andTraditional Affairs (Cogta) forneglecting its oversight role of thelocal and district municipalities inPietermaritzburg.
“The march was to support thelocal waste pickers in Pietermaritz-burg. The municipality has beenplaying hide and seek with thedistrict municipality in terms ofbuilding this. We have tried toengage with them but we have notreceived any answers.
“For three years, thismunicipali-ty has not taken the decision to buildthe MRF. Currently in South Africa,we are experiencing a high rate ofunemployment.
“The current government speaksof job creation, however if themunicipalitycannotseethisasaway
of creating job opportunities for itslocal people, I don’t know what elsewill. We need answers,” saidMbatha.
Mbatha further stated that theMRFwill enable thewastepickers towork under better conditions.
“The MRF will move the wastepickers away from these badconditions they work under. Theproject will also help the MsunduziMunicipality because they have
problems with waste management.“Recently in October, a waste
pickerwasoverrunbyatractoratthelandfill site. The other waste pickeris in hospital and is paralysed due toan accident which took place at thelandfill site.
“Waste pickers want to workunder better conditions but themunicipality wants to kill thesepeople,” explained Mbatha.
He said that there are 700 waste
pickers at the New England Roadlandfill site.
“We have other waste pickerswho work on the streets aroundtown.Wedonothandle thosepeopleanymore because the numberfluctuates.
“We have seen a rise in the num-ber of waste pickers who seek ameans of making a living forthemselves and for their families,”said Mbatha.

Boy (3)drowns intoilet pitKHANYISANI DLOMO
A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy drownedand died in a hole allegedly dug fortoilets on the weekend in Francetownship.
Hlumisa Makhasi was playingwith his friend in a neighbour’syard when the incident happened,according to his father, SimphiweGqotha.
The hole had been dug about twomonths ago to build a toilet andbecause of rain, water filled in, hesaid.
A visibly shaken Gqotha said heasked the friend where his son wasand the little boy pointed to the hole.
“When I got there I couldn’t seeanything.Withthehelpofneighbourswe…putman-made steps and finallywe managed to pull him out.Unfortunately he had died,” he said.

HONESTY is the best policy ishow to describe AyandaMamjuqu (18), who found an
iPad in the city centre and has beenadamantly searching for the owner.
Mamjuqusaidthathewaswindowshopping in town on 20 November,after finishing his exams, and foundaniPadinthevicinityof theCathedralof the Holy Nativity.
Hesaidthathewastemptedtotakeit in and sell it, however he thoughtabout his mother’s words that oneshould never take joy from other’stears.
He then went home and told hisparents about the iPad that he foundand his mother, Busiswe Ngubane,contactedShanaazBuxatCrimeAlertPietermaritzburg.
After hearing about thehonesty ofthe Grade 11 Heather Secondarypupil, Bux decided that he should berewarded.
It was then that she asked her‘crime-maniacs’ if they would beinterested in making a donationtowards a Christmas gift forMamjuqu.
Bux managed to collect enoughmoney frommembersof thepublic tobuy Mamjuqu the gift that was at thetopofhisChristmas list -aBlackberrycellphone.

their son’s honesty Njuqu’s parentswere overwhelmed with pride.
“That is the way we raised ourchildren to behave; that they mustfear God before anyone else. Theyhavegrownupbelievingthatbydoingsomething small, it will take youhigher in life,” said Shadrack,Mamjuqu’s father.
Headdedthat theyneverexpectedfor their son to get this amount ofrecognition.
“We just hugged him and told himthat we were proud that he did therightthing.Wearesurprisedatthere-wards that have come from hisactions.”
The handover of the gifts tookplace at the Pietermaritzburg SAPSCluster Offices, where acting station
Commander Brigadier FrancisBantham rewarded Njuqu with hiscellphone and money.
“I am proud of the way that myparents raised me. They taught methe right values and I am happy thatI made them proud,” said Mamjuqu.
Bantham said that she was over-joyed at the initiative and honestlyshown by Mamjuqu.
“This isaclearexampleofhowthecommunity can help the police in thefight against crime in the city, andsomething that all the youth shouldlook to and follow.
“WewishAyandaeverythingofthebest and we are proud of hiscommitment to fight against crime.”
Sheadded that thecommunityarethe ones that help the police becomebetter at their jobs.
“The community make it possibleto fight against crime in the city. Thecommunity needs to take charge oftheir own streets.
“We will continue our operationswithin the cluster over the festiveperiod, butwe cannot emphasize theimportance of communityinvolvement enough,” she said.

Illegal electricity connections kill again in ManorKHANYISANI DLOMO

Amanwas electrocutedby illegalconnectionsanddiedattheweekend- just two weeks after another mandied the same way in Echo Road,while his friend was injured byexposed wires there.
ER24 spokesperson RusselMeiring said the man, believed tohave been taking a short cut, waswalking in thebushes therewhenhestumbled on electric wires and was
electrocuted on Saturday.“He suffered severe head burn
injuresandwasdeclareddeadonthescene.
“Paramedics had to wait forEskom to switch off the mainelectricitypowersotheycouldattendto the patient,” Meiring said.
Police spokesperson Colonel JayNaicker confirmed the incident andsaid an inquest docket had beenopened.
The illegal connections run fromEchoRoad substation to the Jika Joeinformal settlement.
Residents have been raisingconcern over the issue of illegalconnectionsintheareathatcontinueto claim lives.
Councillor Naleni Atwaru saidshe was aware of the incidentand said she has been reporting awide rangeof electricity problems tothe electricity department,municipalmanager andmayor for along time.
“Theyarewellawareof the illegalconnections in the area and theproblem still persists. The death isregretted, and could have been
avoided had the appropriate actionbeen taken,” Atwaru said.
“I implore the residents to [come]forwardbyproviding affidavits and/or petitions to identify who theculprits are that are doing theseillegal connections and help blowthe whistle on this illegal activityin the interests of saving furtherlives.”
Municipal spokespersonThobeka Mafumbatha said: “Themunicipality will investigate thematter. People are discouragedagainst illegal connections.”

Inflation ofMaritzburgUnited ticketpricesON 16 December, which is the Day ofReconciliation,my friendsand Iwentto the Harry Gwala stadium with theaimtowatchasoccermatchbetweenMaritzburg United and Sundowns.
It was so frustrating to see thattickets prices had been inflated fromthe normal price of R40. I havepersonally observed suchmisconductbytheofficials,especiallywhen they play against big teams.
I don’t think that such a wrongpractice should be condoned.
Another thing that reallyfrustrates me the most is the accessroute to the stadium. It is so muddyand I fail to understand why it is leftin that terrible condition. On top ofthat, there is no reasonable parkingfacility for football lovers at thestadium. We leave our carsvulnerable and the municipalityshould indeed intervene.
A failure to adhere to this wouldmake people hesitant to go to thestadium where they leave their carsunsafe when they enter to watchgames. Iknowthat themajorityof thepeople residing in the greater PMBarea share the same sentiment.
Something needs to be doneurgently.

TAKE NOTICE that the Msunduzi Municipality (“the Municipality”) has, interms of Section 60(1)(a) of the Local Government: Municipal SystemsAct 32 of 2000, resolved to expropriate the immovable properties listedbelow in terms of Section 9(3)(a) and Section 9(3)(b) of the HousingAct (Act No. 107 of 1997) and section 7(5) of the Expropriation Act(Act No.63 of 1965) read with Section 25(2) of the Constitution of theRepublic of South Africa, 1996.TO: the parties described in the schedule below as “Owner(s)” and whichshall include any executor in the estate of a deceased owner, any trusteeor liquidator in the insolvent estate of an owner, or if the owner of theproperty is under legal disability his/her legal representative and includesall or any other authorized representative of the owner including but notlimited to any Land Title Adjustment Commissioners appointed in termsof the Land Titles Adjustment Act No. 111 of 1993.AND TO: All other persons claiming any right to or interest in theproperties described in the schedule below, whether by registration orotherwise and particularly any lessee, buyer or builder contemplated interms of Section 9 (1)(d) of the Act (Act No.63 of 1975).The Municipality deems it prudent to achieve by means of expropriation,in the interest of efficient administration, and to address urgent shortterm housing and infrastructure needs in the Edendale complex.
Any inconvenience or anxiety that the expropriation procedure may causeis sincerely regretted and accordingly, every effort will be made to assistyou with any problems or queries you may have. However before theMunicipality proceeds any further you are:a) Hereby given notice of the intention of the Municipality to expropriate,
in terms of Section 9(3)(a) and Section 9(3)(b) of the Housing Act (ActNo.107 of 1997) (subject to the approval of the MEC: Public Works andHuman Settlements) the properties listed below, and
b) Invited to submit within 30 days of the date of this notice a writtenstatement detailing any objections you may have to the proposedexpropriation.
If your name appears on the list below or you know of the whereaboutsof anyone in the schedule listed below, you have thirty (30) calendar daysfrom the date of this notice to record any comment / objection to theproposed expropriation by contacting Mr. A Khoali of GEVDI / MsunduziMunicipality, GEVDI Office, P.O. Box 321, Pietermaritzburg, 3200.Your attention is drawn to Section 9(1) and Section 12(3)(a)(ii) of theExpropriation Act which provided that each owner has a period of sixtycalendar (60) days within which to submit a written statement to theMinister of Human Settlements with regard to and comment or objectivethe owner may have regarding the compensation offered below.
Furthermore, please also take notice:1. Section 9(5) of the Expropriation Act makes it an offence to give falseor misleading information in response to this notice and a fine and/orimprisonment may be handed down for what is considered fraud;2. Section 9(8) provides that anyone who refuses, without reason, tocomply with a request by the Minister in terms of Section 9(3) shall beliable to a fine not exceeding R2000 or to a period of imprisonment notexceeding 6 months or both;3. In terms of Section 10, you have 8 (eight) months to submitan alternative compensation proposal, failing which the Minister’sdetermination of the compensation awarded shall be binding andenforceable;4. In terms of Section 19, any registered mortgage bonds over theproperty e.g. to the bank, shall be settled as a preferential claim;5. You will be requested, within 60 (sixty) days from the date of thisnotice to deliver to the undermentioned address:5.1 Whether or not you accept the compensation offered, and if not, analternative amount must be given with calculations as to how this amountwas determined;5.2 If the compensation is not accepted, you shall be required to furnish
full particulars of any improvements to theland which in your opinion increase the valueof the land;6. Where applicable you should provide:a.) If the property was leased prior to thisnotice, details of any lease(s) awarded inrespect of the property and a certified copy ofany lease;b.) If prior to the date of this notice you sold the property, then providedetails of the purchaser and a certified copy of the purchase and saleagreement;c.) If any building is subject to a builder’s lien / hypothec then details ofthe lien holder and building contract must be provided;7. You should provide your address and contact details for furthercorrespondence with you on this expropriation.
