THEExecutiveCommittee(Exco)hasagreedtoget a blanket interdict from court which willprevent potential, but unidentified persons, from invading Msunduzi municipal land.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said thatbrief research conducted indicates that asimilar interdict has been granted toeThekwini, aswellastheCityofJohannesburg.

“This is a cancer and it may get worsemoving closer to the 2016 local governmentelections, with people taking advantage of the

environment to profile themselves as alterna-tive leaders to the current representatives,”said mayor Chris Ndlela.

Exco member Bill Lambert said thatpreventative measures must incorporateaction from the municipal security depart-ment.

“The blanket interdict will allow us todemolish the illegal structures as soon as theycropup, andwill allowusnot towaste timeandresources. There are pockets of land beinginvadedbecausepeoplearebankingonthefactthat the processes of the law are slow enoughto give them other benefits,” added Ndlela.

Commercial lease audit comes to a grinding haltNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

ITwas an egg on the facemomentfor the Executive Committee(Exco) members when theyrealized that the presentationon the commercial lease audit, which was scheduled to bepresentedat the lastExcomeetingof the year, did not come throughfrom the economic developmentbusiness unit.

Exco is on recess and willcommence next year January.

The report would haveidentified various aspects ofcommercial leasing in thePietermaritzburg area, especiallyin the CBD.

Some of the informationwouldhavegivendirectionsastohowthemunicipality can grow its ratesdatabase.

None of the deputy municipalmanagers(DMMs)werepresentatthe last Exco meeting of the yearbecause they had to attend a locallabour forummeeting, saidmayorChris Ndlela.

“Therearepeoplewaitingto in-vest in this city. There are threethat I know of. Nothing has beendoneand it hasbeenninemonths. It’s like having a baby. At leastwhen you have a baby somethinghappens. If the government goes

ahead with the new rates policy,we are going to have to look else-where to fill that gap,” saidconcerned Exco member BillLambert.

Ndlela said that he has spokento Ngcobo and relayed that he isnot pleased with the speed atwhich the matter is beingapproached.

“HonourableLambertisnottheonly one frustrated by this. All ofus, including the potentialinvestors [are frustrated]. It ismore frustrating for us becausethis means we can’t expand ourrates base. This is a thorn in ourflash.”

The presentation on thecommercial lease audit is one of afew outstanding matters whichhavenot been resolvedby respon-sible deputymunicipalmanagers.

“LastweekafterExcoIcalledallDDMs and alerted them to all theoutstandingmattersandIdidindi-cate thatwehad toattend toall theoutstanding matters. I will have achat with doctor Ngcobo outsidethe meeting,” said Nkosi.

Ndlela said that employer andemployee employment clauseswill have to be exercised.

“It has come to a point where itis not only a matter of chatting.Thereare somesectionsof the lawgoverning employer and employ-

eematterswhichwillhavetobein-voked.Wecan’tpretendas thoughit is normal what is going on.Unfortunately, thebuckstopswithallofus.Ifwedon’tinvokenecessa-ry pieces of legislation in terms of

clauses governing the employ-ment conditions we are not goingto win this battle. We are nowconstrained about this snail pacein which this matter is beingattended,” Ndlela told Exco.

Infighting is not part of ANC cultureIT is with huge sadness that we

witness the tusslingandinfight-ing leading to the death of

members of the ANC wheneverthere are processes before electiveconferences in various regions.

Thesebarbaricincidentsarenotpart of ANC culture and if theycontinue I urge leaders who are

contenders for positions towithdraw from participating insuch elections.

Being a member of the ANC ingood standing these conferencesare not merely about elections butare collective processes to talkabout ANC policies.

Unfortunately, these ugly

activities before conferencesreduce and undermine the dignityof the ANC’s procedures andpolicies. It’sahealthycultureinanyorganisation to discuss and lobbyfor leadership but not in a fashionwherethisgoodpracticewill leadtocompromising the legitimateprocess of elections.

Late political analyst and ANCactivist Nathi Mazibuko, whoservedhistimeonRobbenIslandasapoliticalprisoner, said thepoliticsof fameand thatof self-enrichmenthave dominated and damaged thesoul of the ANC.

Let us plough backAS a man who grew up and started schoolingat Inadi Primary School in the late 70’s, Istronglybelieve thatalmostall thosewhogrewup there and schooled there should ploughback somehow.

We have to plough back to the InadiTraditional Council and to the schools wherewe were given basic education.

I personally wish to request all those whostarted schooling at Inadi Primary andproceeded to Emzamweni Secondary andQoqisizwe, to join me in ploughing back.

I amof theopinion thatweneed tohelpany-how in order to make teaching and learningmore easy.

We need to help in sports by donating sportuniforms, big trophies and school uniforms tothoseneedypupils.SurelyourGodwillblessus

These are my lovely schools. They fed me with knowledge together with

other respected people who are scattered allover the provinces. Our Traditional Councilneedshelp in termsof advice anddonations aswell.

We need to help all izinduna by requestingthem to identify those who are in need.

What’s our fair share?

MUNICIPALITIES have been mandated by theCo-operative Governance minister to be morevigilant in addressing the theft of illegal electricity(back to basics policy).

If this is followedproperly, it ismyhumbleopinionthat there would be less stress on Eskom powerplants, withan increase inrevenue tomunicipalities, thereby bringing about a win-win situation.

WithEskomdivertingpower toBotswanaand theresultant blackouts that South Africa now faces, businesses are running at a huge loss.

The Botswana government ought to be ashamedof its lack of planning in addressing its electricitychallenges, as should Eskom for its lack of foresightin planning for extra power plants to address SouthAfrica and its neighbouring country’s needs.

Miss World winner brings light to SAWITH rolling load shedding plunging SouthAfricans into darkness, Rolene Strauss hasbrought some light to disillusioned people bywinning the 2014 Miss World title.

She can be considered a beacon of hope inthese dark times.

The last time a South African wascrownedwith theMissWorld title was in 1974when Anneline Kriel was declared thewinner.

At least we shared her excitement withStrauss on TV without any of Eskom’spower cuts that we have become soaccustomed to.

Whenaskedwhyshe shouldbeMissWorld, she, in a subtle way, equated her answer tonegotiation and how a divided countrylike South Africa achieved a smooth transitionto democracy. Maybe there would be lessviolence globally if leaders talked to eachother.

Hermission is toworkwith communities tomake sure children are enrolled at school.

Madiba stated that education is the only toolthat can extricate a person from the perpetualcycle of poverty.

Maybe it was once again the Madibamagic that secured the Miss World titlefor South Africa.

People in this country can now smile andboast that the most beautiful woman inthe world comes from South Africa.

With almost one billion viewers watchingthepageant,Strausshasputourcountryonthepedestal once again.

This can be a distraction from all thenegative publicity South Africa has beenreceivingglobally, especiallywith theacquittalof Shrien Dewani.

Inflation ofMaritzburgUnited ticketpricesON 16 December, which is the Day ofReconciliation,my friendsand Iwentto the Harry Gwala stadium with theaimtowatchasoccermatchbetweenMaritzburg United and Sundowns.

Itwassofrustratingtoseethattick-ets prices had been inflated from thenormalpriceofR40.Ihavepersonallyobservedsuchmisconductbytheoffi-cials, especially when they playagainst big teams.

I don’t think that such a wrongpractice should be condoned.

Another thing that really frus-tratesme themost is the access routetothestadium. It issomuddyandIfailto understandwhy it is left in that ter-rible condition. On top of that, thereis no reasonable parking facility forfootball lovers at the stadium. Weleaveourcarsvulnerableandthemu-nicipality should indeed intervene.

A failure to adhere to this wouldmake people hesitant to go to the sta-diumwhere they leave their cars un-safewhen theyenter towatchgames.

Iknowthat themajorityof thepeo-ple residing in the greater PMB areashare the same sentiment.

Something needs to be done ur-gently.

Poobie Naidoo hires veteran journoFormer Echo reporter Jerry talks to usabout themovetowork forawell-knownsportswear store in the city.

Echo Reporter (ER): Big brother, please tell meabout your new position or deal with the localbusinessman Poobie Naidoo of Poobie Naidoo Sports.

Jerry Barnes (JB): Yes, I am very excited and readyfor the big challenge, Poobie Naidoo recently appoint-ed me as the store’s marketing strategist and publicrelations.

Echo Reporter (ER): Okay, which means?JB: It simply means I will be in charge of his market-

ing the and PR side of things. It also means I need totake the Poobie Naidoo Sports brand to the next level. My mission or target is to grow sales, see more orderscoming in and also go out there to market our products.

ER: But Poobie Naidoo Sports is already a wellestablished and well-known businessman and hasbeen for a very long time. What is really needed to bedone?

JB: Yes, but remember his business is not onlyconcentrating on the city or around the walls of hisshop. His brand has gone too big and needs to be keptrunning in big circles. I will be dealing with governmentdepartments (local, regional and provincial level),tertiary institutions, local football associations, schools, clubs and simply taking our products to thepeople out there.

ER: But you are also a well known sports journalistand usually travel around the province, you are verybusy. In light of your schedule, how are you going tohandle the pressure?

JB: I was just waiting for that question and it’s agood question. Let’s get it straight and clear. Currently,I am not officially employed by any local media houses.I am a freelancer. The last time I was officiallyemployed was two years ago in Johannesburg andunfortunately, I did not get anything permanent whenI came back to KZN.

But again, I will be always passionate about writingand my life is about writing. I eat, drink and sleepjournalism.

Journalism will always be part of my life andhonestly, Jerry Barnes is a big brand on his own andit was taken to the dizzy heights by passionate journal-ism.

Also, I must strongly point it out to you that I amnot shy to pray and I am a proud Christian. In shortI know and am proud of my God.

ER: Dealing with government departments, schoolsandsecuringdealscouldbetricky, complicatedand you need to be very influential.

JB: Yes, you are right. As I said Jerry Barnes has beena big local, provincial and national brand for manyyears. My popularity, and especially my experience innetworking skills, will come in handy.

ER: Jerry, everybody has known you as a journalistfor many years and what do you know about market-ing, sales and public relations?

JB: Oh, let me also take this opportunity to informyou that I did sales and marketing with DamelinCollege many years. I also did a course in publicrelations with the Varsity College.

ER: Well, big brother, all the best in your new lifeventure and personally I think Poobie Naidoo Sportscaught a big fish in you.

JB: Thanks, but remember it’s a one sided affair.I need everybody to keep me running, especiallymunicipalities, government department, LFA, clubsand schools. I am actually making myself available forthem for 24/7 and will always jump for them.
