shoppingcentre is tobebuilt in
the Vulindlela area.
The centrewill serve people living
in an estimated 25 000 rural house-
holdsaroundTaylorsHaltandwillbe
the first shopping centre to be built
there.
Pietermaritzburg Chamber of
Business CEO Melanie Veness said
the investment was good news.
We have recently been made
aware of this development, which I
believeisestimatedtobeintheregion
of around R60 million, which is
significant for a rural area.
I havebeenadvised thatbetween
200 and 250 local jobs are expected
to be created. These are particularly
welcome in the Vulindlela area,
where unemployment is in excess of
30%.
The nearest shopping centre for
Vulindlela residents is the Edendale
Mall.
Dr Ray Ngcobo of the Msunduzi
EconomicDevelopmentservicessaid
the development is part of the
municipalitys Vulindlela local
development plan to stimulate
economic growth in the area.
He said the centre was at the
planning and design phase.
They expect the developer to
submit building plans next month
and construction should start three
months thereafter.
We have completed the negotia-
tions with the Ingonyama Trust
[which owns the land] and permis-
sion to occupy has been granted. Our
team is working to assist the
developer.
Once the structure is complete
Ngcobo said, they will also add other
social amenities like a playground
and swimming pool next to the
centre.
There will be job opportunities
when the construction begins and
therewill also be opportunitieswhen
the mall begins operating.
Local councillor Mercy Buthelezi
said she understands that national
retailers and banks had already
signed tooccupyofficesonce themall
begins operating.
We are very excited about this
new development, which will be
the first mall development in our
area.
Veness said: The retail mix is
expected to cater for the needs of the
local community and retailers
servicing a low LSM target market
will find the opportunity very
attrac-tive.
The shopping centre investment
follows the R2 billion Vulindlela
housing development launched by
the government a few years ago.
The development assists the poor
with houses.

looks like any other
home in the area.
Justtwomonthsago house
number 340 was the scene of
a bakkie crash that left eight
Fezokuhle Primary pupils
dead and a family homeless.
SibusisoNgubeni (46) said
the emotional damage
caused by the accident will
forever be engrained in my
mind.
Thehousemaylookbeau-
tifulon theoutside,butweare
struggling to cope emotional-
ly, said Ngubeni.
The father of four said he
notifiedhis insurersabout the
January accident and they
sent contractors to start
rebuilding the house in early
February.
The government did little
for us. The Department of
Social Development gave us a
grocery voucher of R1 500
that they said was meant to
help us replace some of the
groceries that had been
damaged during the
accident.
He said the Department of
Education offered the family
counselling, but his wife,
Lungile, was the only family
memberwhotookuptheoffer.
The family is recovering
slowly. Its my wife who I am
worried about. She is still
severely traumatised. It is go-
ing to be a long road for her
because she saw everything.
She struggleswith insom-
nia and experiences body
painswhich can be attributed
to the lingering pain. When
she hears strange noises she
gets a fright, he said.
Ngubeni said the family
suffered a huge financial set-
back.

calming measures to prevent
further accidents in the area.

about the safety measures.

to treat the request like any
other and soon people are go-
ing to forget what happened,

never forget.

THE Msunduzi Municipality plans to increase
its 37 Wards, by adding another two after
August.
Twoadditionalwardswillbecreated-Ward
38 in the northern suburbs and Ward 39 in
Vulindlela. The municipality has the option of
creating four more wards.
National Minister for Co-operative Govern-
ance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) had an-
nounced thatMsunduziwaseligible tohaveup
to amaximumof six additionalWards so extra
councillors could serve residents.
Ward 38 will include parts of Thembalihle,
Bishopstowe and parts of Ashburton.
Ward39will includepartsofVulindlelasuch
asSongozima,Hemu-Hemu,EkhokhwanePri-
mary and parts of Incwadi, which is between
10 and 15 kilometres away from Vulindlela.
The IFP raised concerns about Ward 39,
saying it could create potential traditional
leadership and service delivery problems.
CouncillorThinasonkeNtombelasaid:The
way this is divided means areas under one
traditional authority will now fall into another
traditional authority and that could create
problems.
If this is accepted, depending on the voting
patterns, it means someone who lives in
Vulindlelamayhavetobeservicedbyacouncil-
lor who lives in Incwadi, he said.
The proposal has to go to the demarcation
board for approval and then public consulta-
tion and the process could only be finalised by
the end of the year.

CELEBRATING National Water Week, Malala
Primary in Snathing on Friday hosted a water
awarenessday to sensitisepupils and thecom-
munity about the importance of saving water.
Under the theme Nothing to substitutewa-
ter,pupilsstartedwithawaterstudyatanear-
by riverwhere they assessed the cleanliness of
the river.
SpeakingtoEchoateacher,headof theenvi-
ronmentclub,MabuMakhathini said: Studies
showthat thereisawatercrisis inSouthAfrica.
Initially we must consume about 173 litres of
water, but in this country we consume more
than we should. It has also been revealed that
there is a scarcity of fresh water.
We decided to raise awareness because
water is a precious resource which we should
all save. It is also important to teach children
from a young age so they can teach their par-
ents.
Environment officer from Duzi Umngeni
Conservation Trust (DUCT) said they did awa-
ter studywith the pupils to determine the river
condition.
It is important forpeople to savewater and
to take care of their environment. We visit
schools around the citywherewe teachpeople
abouttheimportanceoftakingcareoftheirsur-
roundings. Theymust clean rivers and pick up
solid waste.
A clean environment is a healthy environ-
ment, said principal Thembeka Ngubane.
Weare an environmentally friendly school
and teach our pupils about the importance of
water and conserving it. Since studies have in-
dicated there is a water crisis in this country,
it is our responsibility as teachers not only to
teachourpupilsabouttheimportanceofsaving
water,butalsooursurroundingcommunities.

ITH the help of the
Pietermaritzburg and
District Community Chest,
apassionateteacherhasbeenableto
bring about a positive change in her
community.
Selby Msimang Pre-School
principal Thembile Gule (63), said
that personal reasons forced her to
take early retirement from her pas-
sion, teaching, in 2005.
With 30 years experience under
her belt, she thought of different
ways she couldgiveback to the com-
munity of Edendale.
Having taught at a school that
produced KwaZulu-Natal Premier
Senzo Mchunu, Gule decided to go
back to doing what she loved most.
When I retired I stayed at home
anddidnothing. But I had this burn-
ing desire to go back to teaching. I
realised that the matric failure rate
was because of the poor system at
pre-school level.
Andthatiswhywearenowusing
the Early Childhood Development
Programme.
During her retirement Gule
couldnt resist theurgeof goingback
to teaching, so in 2009 she joined
Selby Msimang Pre-School as the
principal.
Together with the teachers we
have been able to improve this
school to what it is today and the
children are fed twice a day.
Gule said she learnt about the
Pietermaritzburg and District
Community Chest last year and ap-
plied for funding.
I sent an application and we
were successful. Today we are the
proudbeneficiary of theCommunity
Chest, she said.
Last year she received R24 000
from the organisation, which she
used to buy stationery, feed the chil-
dren and cover basic operational
costs.
The Community Chest plays a
huge role in improving the lives of
people in our community. Some-
timestheybringusbreadforthechil-
dren and we really appreciate it,
said Gule.
When I taught at Amakholwa
High, Mchunu was a pupil there. I
was told that the Msunduzi area
base manager Themba Lyons
schooled at Selby, she said.
Gule encouraged community
members tocontinuesupporting the
Community Chest in their fund-
raising initiatives so that the organi-
sation canmeet its R4million target
before the end of this month.
According to the Community
Chests website, there are 74
Community Impact Partners in
Pietermaritzburg that receive their
annual grants in four quarterly in-
stalments. Their current allocation
budget for2014/2015financialyear
is R4 919 730.

won acclaim in Showboat,

- who grew up in Imbali and
matriculated from Haythorne
SecondarySchool inWoodlands,
before heading off to Tshwane
University of Technology to
study musical theatre -
auditioned for The Lion King
by video.
I sent in an audition and
gotacallbackfortheauditions
in South Africa in August.
Then I foundout a fewmonths
later that I had got the chance to be in the
show, he said.
They actually wantedme to join them in
December, but it clashed with Orpheus so I
opted to stay in South Africa and then they
called me again and asked if I could come
when my contract ended.
Of course, I said yes. Its been a dream
ofmineforsolong.Itsoneofthoseshowsthat
everyone wants to do and to be able to do it
in the West End is even better.
Shangasewillbepartof theensemble,but
will get toplay the key role of Simba in some
matinee performances.
Its a wonderful opportunity to grow
withintheDisneycompany,andImighteven
get to play Simba full-time in one of their
other productions, he said.
Shangase said his family was super
excited to see him getting the chance to live
his dream.
I cant wait to get them over to the UK to
see the show, he added.

Rocky was the most
