“who”weareduringourRe-covenantingSundayservice.Ihavetwothoughtsonthis.Thefirstcentersaroundthenotionofmission. Missionisnotsimplywhatwedo,butwhowealreadyare.AssoonasthechurchopensitsdoorsonSundaymorning,andinallitsactivitythroughtheweek,wearemeanttoembodyGod’sloveandjustice.Afterall,wecansharewithawiderworldonlywhatwehavereceivedandliveoutourselves. AsDietrichBonhoefferputit,“ThechurchistheworldthewayGodmeansittobe.”ThisistheultimatemissionstatementforallofuswhoworkineverysettingoftheUnitedChurchofChrist–congregation,Association,Conference,national. Ourconcernforthewholeworldisexpressedinthewaywerelateone-on-one.Howwellwerespondtodifferenceandcontroversy,howweexpressthepowerofGod’sloveinourpersonalandcorporatelife,howmuchworship,SundaySchoolandadulteducation,andalltherestwedo,testifytoGod’samazinggrace–allthismakesusabeaconofhope,andhopefullyamodel,inaworldtornbyconflictanddivision. TeresaofAvilasaid,“Christhasnobodynowonearthbutyours,nohandsbutyours,nofeetbutyours.YoursaretheeyesthroughwhichChrist’scompassionistolookouttotheworld.Yoursarethefeetwithwhichheistogoaboutdoing
good.Yoursarethehandswithwhichheistoblessusnow.” IfIseeachildslipandfallinthepathofacar,andIdonotsnatchthatchildoutoftheway,Goddoesnotreachdownahandfromheaventodoso.Thatchildiskilled.Godneedsmetosavethatchild’slife.Heneedsustoputanendtowar.ThisiswhatJesusmeansinsaying,“Ifyoulovemeyouwillobeymycommands.”(John14:15)ThisiswhyJohninsiststhatloveofGodisshowninloveoftheother.(1John4:20-21) Onasecondthought,Ireadanarticlerecentlyonthe“HappiestPeopleintheWorld.”YouknowwhichcountryrateshighestontheWorldHappinessReport?Norway!Norwegiansarethehappiestcountryintheworld.Howcanthatbe?Itsnowshalftheyear.ThearticleunderscoredtheNordicconceptof“HYGGE”asacornerstonetotheirculture.HYGGEisdescribedastheartofcreatingintimacy,simplicity,safety,togetherness,andbeingcaringtoyourselfandothers. Now,asofNorwegianextractionmyself,shouldIbehappierthanIam?NotsureaboutthisstudybecauseIfindmy“HYGGE”inthischurch.Thisiswhatwedoandwhoweare.Youdon’thavetotraveltoNorwaytobehappy.YoucanfindithereatCCP. NeighborsinNeedSpecialOffering:TheNeighborsinNeedoffering,whichwewillreceiveonSunday,Oct.1,supportstheUCC’sministriesofjusticeandcompassionthroughouttheUnitedStates.Two-thirdsoftheofferingisusedbytheUCC’sJusticeandWitnessMinistriestofundawidearrayoflocalandnationaljusticeinitiatives,advocacyefforts,anddirectserviceprojects.Throughucc.org/justice,ournationalJusticeandWitnessMinistriesofficeoffersresources,newsupdates,andactionalertsonabroadspectrumofjusticeissues.Theycontinueitsstrongpolicyadvocacyworkonissuessuchasthefederalbudget,votingrights,immigration,healthcare,hatecrimes,civilliberties,andenvironmentjustice.NeighborsinNeedalsosupportsourAmericanIndianneighborsintheUCC.Thereare20UCCcongregationsonreservationsandoneurban,multi-tribalcongregationinMinneapolis.Pleaseprayabouthowmuchyoucancontributetotheseneeds.Specialenvelopeswillbeinthepewpocketsforyourconvenience.JanetWilliamsorCathyEvans.
