June 23, 2014 Hello ECM-V students, Congratulations on completing boards, making it through your rotations orientation and your first didactic week! As you transition into your 3rd year clinical training experience, know that you are well prepared for this task, allow your unique personalities to shine through as you interact with your patients, read about your patient's disease processes on the day that you see them and you will be able to recall the information much better the next time, and understand that you know more than you think you do. We have seen you grow and learn over the past two years, now it is time to put all of that knowledge into practice!! Jaime and I just wanted to give you an outline of the ECM-V course so that you can be successful in this didactic portion of your OMS-III year. Each rotation will present amazing opportunities for you to acquire both skills and knowledge; you will be busy, you will work long hours on rotation, but you are still required to complete your ECM-V responsibilities in a timely fashion without deviation from our expectations. Our expectations were outlined in the "Intro to ECM-V" presentation during the rotations orientation week but here is a review so that you are in complete understanding of how to be successful in this course. 1. Read the syllabus (it can be found on Blackboard under the ECM-V course) 2. Check your WesternU e-mail and be certain to read all e-mail correspondence from Jaime Servin and me (Dr. Dreibelbis) 3. Complete your ECM-V work during the rotation it is scheduled. We have taken great lengths to parallel the modules/readings to correspond with the rotation that you will be on. 4. The attestations need to be turned in before the end of every rotation AFTER you have completed all of the

Hello ECM-V students,Congratulations on completing boards, making it through your rotations orientation and your first didactic week!

1. Read the syllabus (it can be found on Blackboard under the ECM-V course)2. Check your WesternU e-mail and be certain to read all e-

mail correspondence from Jaime Servin and me (Dr. Dreibelbis)3. Complete your ECM-V work during the rotation it is scheduled. We have

taken great lengths to parallel the modules/readings to correspond with the rotation that you will be on.

4. The attestations need to be turned in before the end of every rotation AFTER you have completed all of the assignments for that rotation. If you do not complete the attestation prior to the completion of your current rotation, those points will be lost and WILL NOT be recoverable.

5. You will have access to the modules/readings/quiz corresponding to the rotation you are currently on. The quiz must be completed before the end of the rotation. Please schedule time during each week of the rotation so that you complete the required modules/readings throughout the rotation; do not leave this task to the end of your rotation!! We understand that certain events happen that are outside of your control, which is why you should get into the habit of scheduling time to complete your ECM-V requirements.

6. The quiz corresponding to the rotation you are on will be open to you during the entirety of your current rotation. If you do not complete the attestation and/or the quiz before 11:59pm on the final Sunday of your rotation, you will not be allowed to complete that quiz for full credit.

7. If you do not complete all modules/readings/quizzes prior to the didactic week, you will be required to stay and complete your work for partial credit at the end of your didactic week responsibilities.

8. The rotation blocks and required modules/readings are clearly outlined in

Page 2: ECM5 Expectation_E-mail to Students_06!22!2014

the ECM-V syllabus so please print that out and have a running understanding of what you have completed and what you still need to complete.

9. The ONLY month that you do not have an ECM-V task is your vacation rotation (unless it falls on your last rotation of your OMS-III year during which time you will need to complete the ECM-V final exam).

Special Circumstances:

Internal Medicine: Students beginning June 23, 2014 on an Internal Medicine rotation (IM-1, IM-

2, IM-3), for contractual reasons, you will not be able to access the SIMPLE modules on MedU until July 1, 2014. All other didactic materials and readings will be available beginning June 23, 2014. The quiz for this first IM rotation will open on July 7, 2014. This will only affect the students whose first rotation of the year is Internal Medicine.

The IM rotation syllabus and the ECM-V IM requirements overlap completely so when you reference the ECM-V syllabus, you will understand the didactic requirements of the IM rotation.

As you all know, the Rotations Office splits the Internal Medicine rotations into IM-1, IM-2, and IM-3 for purposes of nomenclature for internal use. To allow for organization of each OMS-III student's IM didactic ECM-V experience, regardless of which IM rotation you begin with (IM-1, IM-2, or IM-3) you will begin a series of 12 weeks of SIMPLE modules/readings with Week #1 and continue through the series in order from Week #1 through Week #12. Each week will focus on a specific system and will include MedU modules as well as additional readings:

    IM Month #1 (Regardless of IM-1, IM-2, or IM-3)    - Week 1: Cardio    - Week 2: Infectious Disease    - Week 3: Pulmonology    - Week 4: Nephrology    IM Month #2   (Regardless of IM-1, IM-2, or IM-3)     - Week 5: Gastroenterology    - Week 6: Endocrinology    - Week 7: Hematology/oncology    - Week 8: Neurology    IM Month #3   (Regardless of IM-1, IM-2, or IM-3)     - Week 9: Rheumatology    - Week 10: TBD    - Week 11: TBD    - Week 12: TBD

Example: If you were to start off rotations with Red Block (FM, Surgery, IM-3), you would access and complete your ECM-V curriculum corresponding to

Page 3: ECM5 Expectation_E-mail to Students_06!22!2014

the rotation you are on for that block. When you are on your IM-3, since it would be your first IM rotation of the year, you would begin your IM Month #1 as outlined above (Weeks 1-4). When you get to your Orange Block (Psychiatry, IM-1, IM-2), you would continue along the series completing the IM Month #2 as outlined above (Weeks 5-8) with your 2nd of 3 IM rotations and then finish out the 12 week series during your IM Month #3 (Weeks 9-12).

Red Block o Family Medicine rotation: complete the FM ECM-V requirements (in

ECM-V syllabus)o Surgery rotation: complete the Surgery ECM-V requirements (in ECM-

V syllabus)o IM-3 rotation: begin the 12 week IM series above with IM Month

#1 (Week 1-4, since this is your first IM rotation of your OMS-III year) Orange Block

o IM-2 rotation: continue in the series with IM Month #2 (Weeks 5-8)o Psychiatry rotation: complete the Psychiatry ECM-V requirementso IM-1 rotation: complete the series with IM Month #3 (Weeks 9-12)

Family Medicine: Students beginning June 23, 2014 on a Family Medicine rotation,

for contractual reasons, you will not be able to access the fmCASES modules on MedU until July 1, 2014. All other didactic materials and readings will be available beginning June 23, 2014. The quiz for this first FM rotation will open on July 1, 2014. This will only affect the students whose first rotation of the year is Family Medicine.

Please do your part and we will do ours to make sure that the ECM-V course is robust and promotes further education in each medical specialty discipline so that you can deepen your foundation of medical knowledge as you begin to understand which direction your medical career will take you.

You have worked hard over the past two years, now you get to step into the next phase of your education. Good luck, have fun, show up on time with an open mind ready to learn!! Know that the entire departments of family medicine at COMP/COMP-Northwest are here for you if you need anything or have any questions. We wish you well :)
