Conventional DVD

Background

• The DVD has become the standard medium for Data Storage, but has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1995.

• There is a worldwide need to cut oil dependency, minimise energy consumption and reduce C02 emissions, but the DVD has little to offer to meet these goals.

• On the contrary it depends on a non-biodegradable toxic resin in its construction and is therefore not recyclable.

• The Home Entertainment industry is promoting environmentally friendly print & packaging and support content such as Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” & Leonardo DiCaprio’s “11th Hour”.

• But the core product to promote this content, the DVD, has so far not been subject to any improvements in its carbon footprint.

Background

EcoDisc. History.

The EcoDisc was invented in 2006 in an effort to create a new DVD medium with its impact on the environment in mind. The focus was to engineer a product which was lighter, uses less energy, dispenses with the need of the harmful toxic bonder and is altogether greener than common media.

As a benchmark any such green medium must still display the same playability, capacity, optical and electrical properties of a DVD. The EcoDisc became this green medium.

Today EcoDisc is developed and licensed by EcoDisc Technology AG (EDT), a Swiss Research & Development corporation. EDT owns the patents, trademark rights and other intellectual property to develop new media standards that challenge the way data and video are stored and distributed.

As environmental concerns constantly raise the bar for carbon saving technologies the EcoDisc is revolutionising the media market as the first true green alternative to conventional media.

Change to EcoDisc. It’s carbon sense.

Thickness

The Thickness of a conventional DVD is 1,2mm (2 substrates combined)

• 52% reduction in carbon footprint

• 50% reduction of polycarbonate

• Reduced weight

• One substrate = elimination of toxic bonder

Thickness of the substrate of an EcoDisc is only 0,6mm (= ½

thickness)

Readability

Printed Dots

Outer clamping Ring

EcoDisc DVD

• Patented dots aid stabilization of the EcoDisc during clamping.

• Outer clamping ring and dots create correct positioning of

information layer.

• Printed instead of moulded dots avoid optical distortion of the

substrate.

Milestones

• Between 2005 and the end of 2008 an estimated 2 billion discs were distributed as free give-aways in Western Europe – mainly through newspapers and magazines.

• At the end of 2007 EcoDisc was introduced to the newspaper market and used by the Mail on Sunday and The Independent for their free cover-mount media.

• EcoDisc has received positive media reviews including a feature on BBC Radio 4’s “You & Yours” consumer interest programme.

• People in publishing, marketing and direct mail have been quick to recognise the potential of this new light weight disc.

• To date over 28m EcoDiscs have been sold and distributed in Europe, initially to newspapers, magazines and other FMCG. More recently it has been taken up by government departments, the corporate and educational sectors in the UK.

• Additionally some well known companies & government agencies have started to adopt EcoDisc instead of the conventional DVD for their releases.

Case Study - Health & Safety Executive

“The Communications Directorate of the Health and

Safety Executive (HSE) supports the use of information

products which provide carbon footprint savings.

As part of a recent publicity campaign aimed at

increasing awareness of slips and trips issues in the

workplace, HSE has distributed over 650,000 EcoDiscs

which promote a new online, interactive Slips and Trips

E-learning Programme (STEP).”

Case Study - Department for Transport

“Software Logistics recently produced 2,500 units of an

EcoDisc for Department for Transport highlighting

efficiency measures implemented by different

companies and drivers to improve fuel management.

By using EcoDisc rather than a standard DVD the

Department were able to make a CO2 emission saving

in excess of 172kg, thus supporting their own

commitment within Freight Best Practice.”

Testimonial – Future Publishing

“Future, the special-interest media group, is keen to support initiatives which help

to reduce our impact on the environment in a commercially sustainable way. We

are very supportive of the EcoDisc because its reduced CO2 emissions, reduced

weight and greater flexibility deliver that rare combination of being better for the

environment, for our business and for our customers. The optical disc industry

should not sit back on its laurels and consider its CO2 emissions to be someone

else's problem. EcoDisc technology enables all users of discs to contribute to global

efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. Moving to the EcoDisc has to be the right thing to

do for any business which cares about its carbon footprint.”

Robert Dark - Purchasing Manager, Future Publishing UK (a part of Future plc)

Future plc is an international special-interest media group, founded in 1985, operating in the UK, US and Australia, with over 180 special-interest publications, websites and events for people who are passionate about their interests. A look ahead

• There were 8 billion DVDs produced world-wide in 2007 and similarly in 2008. By 2012 DVD production is expected to reduce to 6.2 billion.

• Corporations in the US and in Europe are already making sustainability a core value of their business strategy.

• Government penalties in 2010 will begin to penalize corporations who fail to meet C02 reduction targets.

• Global summits raise awareness and incentivise early adopters of green technology

• Global opinion leaders endorse alternatives to challenge accepted but non-ecological friendly standards

• EcoDisc will launch new formats, opening up more opportunities to meet environmental targets
