Technology Appropriate Use Requirement

Use of Technology with the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools Community Technology provides students with unique and powerful ways to enhance their learning. Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools supports the use of technology for the purpose of enhancing and supporting teaching and learning. As a Catholic community it is our goal to ensure that the use of technology contributes positively to the learning environment. Use of technology inside or outside of our schools that degrades or defames members of our community is unacceptable. This includes both the use of District technology and personal devices. A personal device refers to (but is not limited to) cellular phones, blackberry type devices, PDAs, MP3 players, iPod type devices, cameras, calculators, GPS units and portable computers such as laptops, notebooks, and netbooks as well as portable storage devices. GSACRD recognizes that students have widespread access to both technology and the internet. Use of personal devices and connectivity is considered to be included in this Acceptable Use Policy. Student interactions and use of technology must contribute positively both at school and in the community.

Rights and Responsibilities Technology resources are provided to support student learning. Access is a privilege, not a right. Use of technology whether owned by the school or devices supplied by the user entails responsibility. It is expected that users will comply with District standards, act in a responsible manner, and will honour the regulations set by the school and classroom teacher. Students are also prohibited from submitting, posting, publishing, sending or displaying obscene, profane, threatening, illegal and other inappropriate material on the internet or other electronic devices as well as invading the privacy of other individuals. Digital storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and to insure responsible use. Users should not expect that files and communications stored on District servers are private. Technology resources, including bandwidth, file space, and printers are for educational purposes. Within reason, freedom of speech and access to information will be honoured. During school, teachers of younger students will guide students toward appropriate materials. Use of public Web tools

Technology provides an abundance of opportunities for students to use interactive tools and sites on public websites that benefit learning, communication and social interaction. The District does not control these public sites and does not manage the information posted by students and therefore does not accept responsibility for their use. Students in consultation with their parents should use discretion when selecting and/or using these interactive tools.

Students may be held accountable for the use of and information posted on these sites if it detrimentally affects the welfare of individual students or the governance, climate, or effectiveness of the school(s).

Page 10: Ecolé G.H. Primeau Middle School Registration Information

From time to time teachers may recommend the use of a public interactive site that to the best of their knowledge is legitimate and safe. As the site is “public” and the teacher (school and District) is not in control of it, students and parents must use their discretion when using or accessing information from the site.

Student and parent use of public sites and public interactive tools is at their own risk. Security and Supervision

For students using the District network access content filtering controls are provided as well as reasonable adult supervision. In spite of these controls and supervision at times students may view inappropriate, objectionable and/or offensive material. Students are to report the occurrence to their teacher or the nearest supervisor. Students will be held accountable for any deliberate attempt to circumvent District technology security and supervision. A security problem on the network should be reported.

Students using mobile and cellular devices on non-District networks are subject to the rights and responsibilities outlined in this document and are accountable for their use.

Students who choose to bring and use personal digital and electronic devices do so at their own risk. The school and District do not accept responsibility for their safekeeping or any damage that may result.

Student’s use of technology must not disrupt others.

"#$%!!!"&'()*+,-!-.+/)0.-!"12)&!#3!41!%)*&0!.5&1+65!789: Primeau students take a step up! École G.H Primeau Middle School is proud to join the ranks of schools actively prioritizing technology use to engage our students in their learning! Our students are encouraged to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to use it in class for learning. We want you to know that these devices will become a tool for active learning. We will have a small supply of extra iPods available for students to use when a learning activity is being done in the classroom. These devices will be used as a learning tool; students will not have ‘free reign’ with them. Students will be able to access, by way of their device, handouts, assignments, educational links and educational video clips from the teacher’s website as well as use educational applications to apply, demonstrate, and extend learning. About Bring Your Own Device

Responsible use of technology facilitates the creative problem solving, information fluency, critical thinking skills, and collaboration needed in today’s world. The Bring Your Own Device initiative aims to have our students learning with access to their own electronic device (iPod, iPhone, iPad, laptop, etc.) both in the classroom and at home. Our goal is to provide our students programming in an environment with 1 electronic device for every student. Why?

• Increases student engagement, innovation, collaboration and maximizes their opportunities for learning and academic achievement.

• Enhances effective communication and collaboration between teachers, students, and parents.

• Creates a learning community that extends beyond the classroom removing the barriers of time and space.

• Improves digital literacy skills that will equip students for the future. • Complements the use of Smartboards, digital resources and other technologies.

BYOD allows students immediate and timely access to the power of the educational resources of the internet. The internet access for these devices will continue to be filtered through our School Division’s filtering software. We will also focus on cyber-morality and the responsible and safe use of technology. We will be supplying a list of the best educational applications for our students to download. We also remind you to ensure each student has a set of ear-buds (headphones) to use in class.

Our primary goal is to improve student learning. The educational possibilities are expansive. Sincerely, V Pedersen Sleight Anstruther Principal Vice Principal

Primeau Middle School and ______________________________(name of student), to use a locker issued by the school for the 2013 – 2014 school year. The granting of this license does not confer any property rights or confer any interest in the locker to the student. If random patrols of the school conducted by the school administrators and the RCMP, including canine members, result in detection of illegal substances; recommendation of expulsion from the school will be the norm. In all cases, parents or legal guardians will be notified.

By signing this license to use the locker, the student agrees to be bound by all of the rules of the school and the Board respecting the use of lockers and respecting use of lockers and respecting contraband or prohibited items.
