Greetings Fellow Modelers, As Doug posted last week, effective yesterday, 11/1/2009, I have assumed the duties of RC-1. As my first official duty I would like to thank Doug for his outstanding tenure as RC-1 and to wish him all the best as moves up the ladder and becomes our next DLC. I believe I've met most, if not all of you, over tha last 15 or so years that I've been involved with IPMS Mid Hudson. If not, I expect we'll get to know one another over the next year or so. In general, I expect to continue the things Doug has started and am going to work up a few things myself. (No Need to panic). If you need to get ahold of me email is the best bet. I check my email regulary and try to respond as soon as possible. I work rotating 24 hour shifts as a Firefighter so I'm not always able to respond immediately andbbecaue fo the schedule, I'm awake when many folks are asleep. For the last couple of weeks Doug has been CC-ing me with RC "Stuff" and, in addition, I now have all of his files. I am working up a calendar of shows for next year as I know some of you have already applied to Doug for approval. I'll get the calendar out ASAP As Doug has already posted, Re-Chartering is in full swing. Many of our chapters have completed the process and are good to go for 2010. For those chapters not already in the process, I will just remind you that the clock is ticking. I met with Bob DeMaio last week and he brought me up to speed on the 2010 NOREASTCON. It sounds like a fantastic time and a very unique venue. I'm sure Bob and his crew would appreciate a sponsorship

Again my deepest thanks to Doug for his service and I know he'll be a fantastic DLC. Until next time Campers, Happy Modeling Doc

Del’s Bits and Pieces…………Things you might like to know, or maybe not.

World War II……….

The 2nd Battalion, 13th Armored Regiment was the only U.S. unit in the Kasserine pass battles equipped with M3 medium tank. They were painted lusterless olive drab ( O.D. No. 9: 33070), some being partially camouflaged by hand-smeared mud. The unit still used the January, 1942 Armored Force specified identification of yellow stars and band on the turret. A white vertical bar that identified the battalion with a short horizontal bar on the right indicating company; Co D, Co E, or Co F.; the short bar to the left identified the platoon. A white tank number is painted on the glacis.

Hasegawa Focke Wulf FW 190A-8 Hal Marshman Sr

I consider the FW-190A one of the prettiest of the World War II fighters, particularly in flight. With those ungainly landing gear, on the ground she looks like a swan out of water. In any case, from that shiney black Aurora offering in the days of yore, through the Monogram, Fujimi, Otaki, DML, Eduard, Tamiya, and now Hasegawa, I've attempted them all. The Hasegawa A-8 is new mold from their earlier A-3/4 pressings, which were adapted from the DML.kit. I'm happy to relate that it is a definite improvement over the earlier kit. Their A-5, and -6 also are new mold. The kit goes together well, with a somewhat easier to assemble cowling. The only place that I found difficult was the leadng edge of the wing filet. Assembly is just a wee bit more ticklish than the Tamiya, with just a few more bits here and there, such as the drop tank sway braces. The glass parts are nice and crisp, and distortion free. I found no dimples or press marks anywhere, with all the moldings matching the clear parts in quality. The surface detail is represented by engraved panel lines, and here is my chief gripe with the kit. They were too shallow for my particular panel line treatment. The Decal sheet caters nicely to 3 different birds. I have no difficulty recommending this kit to all builders except perhaps the very young.

Flash back to Christmas, 2008. My daughter presented me with the 21st Century built up and prepainted 1/32nd FW-190A-8 in JG-1 markings. Very pretty with its red tail band, yellow with black outlined 11 and 3rd Gruppe dash, topped off with the blatant Jg-1 insignia. Looking through my own decal supply, i found an EagleCals sheet with the same markings. Just had to duplicate this handsome bird in 1/48th. Yep, I had the new Hasegawa -8 model in my stash also. No excuse, gotta build it!

My end product pictured here, is painted with Model master Enamels, RLM shade numbers 74/75/76 applied with my Paasche H single action airbrush. I did add my own scratch built seat belts and buckles. I added brake lines with craft wire. I drilled out .025 holes where the visual gear indicators would protrude on the upper wing surfaces, where the ventral antenna would go on the rear belly, and finally where the insulator for the antenna cable drop line entered the fuselage. I used Evergreen ,025 rod, cut to the proper length for these accessories. The antenna cable is Stren monofilament 2 lb test fishing line, the insulators being applied with thick paint and a tooth pick. I must say I enjoyed this build very much, and my daughter was happy that I liked the gift well enough to duplicate it in my own scale.; have fun, Hal Sr

Del’s Bits and Pieces…………Things you might like to know, or maybe not.

World War II……….

Most sources will tell you that the Kasserine Pass battles in February of 1943 were the first engagements between green U.S. troops and the veterans of the German Afrikakorps. The first engagement took place on November 25 - 26 1942 at Chouigui Pass. The 1st Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment was equipped with M3 light tanks and a platoon of halftrack-mounted 75mm howitzers, but lacked infantry, artillery or engineers, met elements of Panzer-Abteilung 190 composed of three or more PzKpfw III’s with 5cm guns and at least six PzKpfw IV’s with the long 7.5cm guns, and some Italian infantry.

The President's ColumnWhere shall I start?

Well, let’s start by confirming that there will be a Downeast Con in March of 2010. March 20, 2010 to be exact, at a new location, the Thorton Academy Linnell Gymnasium in Saco, ME. So get your L.L. Beans ready or your mukluks if you prefer and prepare to head north in the spring.

Just a reminder that NoreastCon 2010 is April 30th thru May 1st down on Long Island, (or in the local vernacular; Lung Giland). It takes place at the American Airpower Museum with the awards banquet at the 56th Fighter Group Restaurant. For more info go to the Long Island Scale Modelers web site, http://lisms.org .

Our IPMS charter has been approved for 2010 and Doc Wiseman has taken over Doug Hamilton as Region 1 coordinator.

In the case that this issue may be published early, before the December meeting, we are having the kit gift swap again this year. Rules are as they were last year, wrap a kit in X-Mas paper,

newspaper, the infamous plain brown wrapper, aluminum foil, etc. A wrapped kit is required to participate. The kit or book for that fact, needs to be in good condition and un-built. One last thing, I call dibs on whatever Terry Sumner brings.

A couple years back we voted to sponsor a new display case on the Battleship Massachusetts. As of this time the case has not been built, the volunteers aboard the Battleship, from our club, have not had time yet to build it, they have been busy repairing, maintaining and updating the existing cases. At the October meeting we voted to sponsor some of that updating, we will fund the light replacement. If you are interested in helping out contact Joe McDonald, Bob Magina, or Kevin Conlon.

A big question on some of our minds has been answered. The latest Fine Scale has just arrived with a review of the new Academy 1/350 Graf Spee kit. It was a thumbs up! There are a few problems listed but it sounds like they can be resolved with a good set of pe.

An item of discussion at the November meeting was our requirements for a hall to host BayCon. John Gisetto has volunteered to compile that info and I know he has started that project because I have been providing data. So, if you think you know of a hall that may meet our requirements you can request a copy of this document. You will then be able to investigate the hall and find out if it has enough square feet, or tables, is handicapped accessible, etc.

Ok, nostalgia time. Ebury Press has released a book that may appeal to many of us; “The Boys Book of Airfix” by Arthur Ward. It’s subtitled ‘Who say you ever have to grow up?’. The book is a history of the company, the good times and bad. It is available in England now for about L20. I suspect it will be available here shortly. Airfix must be to British kids as Aurora and

Revell were to us.

Speaking of books, we have added a new volume to the club library. It’s Steve Zaloga’s new book, “Modeling US Armor of World War 2”, part of the Osprey Masterclass series. It’s hard covered, spiral bound so that it lays flat, 192 pages. I first met Steve, that’s Mr. Zaloga to you guys, (to me too), at my first Noreastcon in the mid ‘70s. He was and still is an inspired modeler. His study of Polish and Russian armor brought him some notoriety such that he was brought on as a consultant by some of the news channels during Operation Desert Storm, getting him some on air time. I have a couple of Steve’s books on particular weapons and on modeling them and have enjoyed them. So far I’m not disappointed with this book. He has a very honest, down to earth approach to building and that is just what the book gives us, Zaloga’s approach to modeling. He tells you the products he uses and how he uses them. He shows some of his experiments and how different products and techniques affect the results. I guess my biggest complaint is that I wish many of the photos were larger. So check it out from club library and check it out.

Speaking of nostalgia, I’ve started a thread on the club forum. It’s titled “The Big Question”. What I ask is this, What is your all time favorite kit to build? I want to know what kit has brought you the most pleasure to build so that you may have built it more that once? It took me a bit of thought to come up with an answer. Can you answer the question?

BayCon? What about BayCon you ask? It was another good year for us. 88 modelers put 344 models on the tables. (Ok, there were really more than 344 models because collections are considered one entry.) And from my

point of view, that’s what we are there for, to look at models! (I wish I had more time to look at them.) I’ve written a separate article, possible posted elsewhere in this issue, giving many of the numbers from the show, such as the fact that we gave out 171 awards. The official results have been completed and supplied to Bob Magina. I don’t know if he intends to post them on the web site. I also have copies available for viewing at the meetings. Something that gets missed by me is posting the winner of the Missing Man Award because of the way the selection is made and announced at the show. I don’t have a folder for it and I forget to add it to the results, I apologize for that. This years recipient was Mike Kenny. This years big awards were to Louis Ripa, Entrants Choice, for his Medieval Knights and Judges Choice went to John McCormick and his F-4E Phantom II. Congratulations to all the award winners.

On behalf of the show committee and in particular, myself, I would like to thank everyone that came and helped out at BayCon. Your efforts do make the show work. From the crew that did the setup to manning the front table, the club table, the raffle table, the judging, tabulation, handing out the awards, to cleanup, thank you very much. I used to try to list everyone that helped in one way or another but so many people, members and non members, helped I know I can’t name everyone. Thanks to all of you! There was some amazing work on the tables. One category that has grown over the last few years is the Trucks and Emergency Vehicles. There were 17 entries this year. Some amazing ones at that. It may be time to split this category. Possibly split the pickups, commercial vans, and light truck frame vehicles in one and the big rigs and heavy equipment in another. Any input? Another category that got 17 entries was the small figures.

got 17 entries was the small figures.

One of my last functions of the day of the show is to do a sweep around the hall and collect the items left behind. This year I got a kit with a $65 price tag on it and a blue hooded sweatshirt. The kit was returned to Apple Valley Hobbies but I still have the sweatshirt. If anyone left behind a sweatshirt, it was on a chair at the main table, I’ve got it in my car.

I guess that covers it.

We are now in the 2009 – 2010 membership year, our 41st year, so once again dues are due. Have you renewed your membership? The membership fee is still only $10 per year. The family membership plan is still available. If you would like to pay a couple years in advance we can handle that. Mail your payments to me or see me at a meeting, checks to be made payable to Bay Colony Historic Modelers.

God bless America! Pray for our servicemen overseas. Happy modeling and give kits to kids!John J. [email protected]
