Oil and Natural Gas Stimulate American Economic and Job GrowthVendor Survey Findings Report

America is blessed with abundant oil and natural gas resources.

This report presents the findings of a 2014 survey of U.S. businesses that constitute Americas domestic oil and natural gas supply chain.1 The survey was undertaken by the American Petroleum Institute (API), the only national trade association that represents all segments of Americas oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 600 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nations energy. Included in the survey are companies that provide goods and services for onshore oil and natural gas development, whether as operators, contractors, service companies, suppliers, or other vendors.

Over the past decade, America has undergone a major energy revolution, rapidly shifting from an era of energy scarcity to an era of energy abundance. Advances in the proven process of hydraulic fracturingor fracking in conjunction with horizontal drilling have allowed the United States to emerge as the number one producer of natural gas in the world. By 2015, America is also projected to become the worlds number one producer of oil.

These new resources have driven the economy forward, resulting in new jobs, higher revenues, and lower energy costs. Abundant oil and natural gas resources have also dramatically strengthened Americas energy security, once considered one of the countrys most alarming economic vulnerabilities. Domestic energy abundance has provided U.S. consumers with critical insulation against price spikes and supply disruptions due to turmoil overseas.

The key to this success, according to a study sponsored by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, has not been the efforts of a handful of Big Oil companies. Instead, it is a broad array of small and midsize oil and gas companies that are propelling record economic and job gains.2

Overall,asof2011,theoilandnaturalgasindustrysupported9.8millionfull-timeandpart-timeU.S.jobsand8percentoftheU.S.economy.3Ofthattotal,energydevelopmentutilizinghydraulicfracturingandhorizontaldrillingsupportedmorethan2.1millionjobsintheU.S.economy.Bytheyear2025,thatnumberisprojectedtoriseto3.9millionjobs.4

Thetop15states,intermsofthetotalnumberofjobsdirectlyorindirectlyattributabletotheoilandnaturalgasindustryin2011,were,inorderofnumberofindustry-relatedjobs,Texas,California,Louisiana,Oklahoma,Pennsylvania,Florida,NewYork,Illinois,Ohio,Colorado,Michigan,Kansas,NorthCarolina,NewJersey,andGeorgia.5Thetotalnumberofjobsdirectlyorindirectlysupportedbyoilandnaturalgasindustryoperationsrangedinthatyearfrom13,700intheDistrictofColumbiato1.9millioninTexas.

Thisreportprovidesalistofnearly30,000Americanbusinesses,locatedineverystateandtheDistrictofColumbia,thatarecontributingtoandbenefitingfromtheU.S.energyrevolution.Oilandnaturalgasdevelopmentreliesuponadiversearrayofbusinessesacrosstheeconomicspectrum,includingsmallequipmentsuppliers,warehousers,largecontainermakers,realestatecompanies,wildlandrestorationcompanies,modularlaboratoryandhousingmanufacturers,uniformsuppliers,port-o-johnrentalcompanies,administrativesupportfirms,andmanymore.Infact,thenearly30,000companiesincludedinthisreportprovideameresamplingofthediversity,scope,andeconomicimpactoftodaysoilandnaturalgasindustrybusinesses.Theactualnumberofsuchbusinesseswithintheindustrysupplychainisinrealitymuchhigher.Forexample,whereasthisreportincludesthenamesofmorethan600businessesoperatingthroughouteveryCongressionaldistrictinOhio,theOhioDepartmentofJobandFamilyServiceshasreportedthatthestateactuallyhasmorethan13,000shale-related(oilandgasdrilling-related)businessestablishmentsinthestate.

Aspartofthe2014survey,thisreportsstatechaptersprovideatallyofindustryvendorsoperatingineachstateandtheDistrictofColumbia,listedbycongressionaldistrict.AlsoincludedisamapofeachstateandtheDistrictofColumbiashowingthelocationofindustryvendorswithincongressionaldistricts.Manyofthestatechaptersalsoincludevendorprofiles.

Ofthe50statesandtheDistrictofColumbia,14areconsideredtopenergyproducers.Thatmeansthatstatewideproductionofoilornaturalgas(orboth)isamongthe10highestinthecountry.6Thesestates,inalphabeticalorder,areAlaska,Arkansas,California,Colorado,Kansas,Louisiana,NewMexico,NorthDakota,Oklahoma,Pennsylvania,Texas,Utah,WestVirginia,andWyoming.Thetopenergy-producingstateinthecountryisTexas,firstbothinoilandnaturalgasdevelopment.Colorado,Louisiana,NewMexico,Oklahoma,andWyomingalsorankwithinthetop10intermsofbothoilandnaturalgasproduction.

However,asthisreportshows,statesatthelowerendoftheproductionspectrumarenotexcludedfromtheeconomicbenefitsoftheenergyrevolution.Residentsinthesestatescontinuetoenjoystrongemploymentandrevenuegainstiedtotheoilandnaturalgasindustry.

Forexample,inIndiana,whichranks24thinoilproductionand25thinnaturalgasproduction,theaverageannualoilandgasindustrysalary(excludinggasstations)is$80,512significantlyhigherthanthestateaverageof$41,792.Overalltheoilandnaturalgasindustrycontributes$16.6billiontotheIndianaeconomy,6.3percentofthestatestotaleconomicactivity.

InDelaware,whichdoesnotproduceanyoilornaturalgas,theaverageannualsalaryacrossallindustriesandsectors

is$52,026.However,theaverageannualsalaryforjobsrelatedtotheoilandgasindustry(excludinggasstations)is$77,876.Overalltheoilandnaturalgasindustrysupports$2billionoftheDelawareeconomy,or4percentofthestatestotaleconomicactivity.

Giventhewidespreadeconomicbenefits,itsnotsurprisingthatAmericansstronglysupportenergyproduction.A2014telephonepollof1,003registeredvotersacrossthecountry,conducted on behalf of the American Petroleum Institute, foundthat77percentofAmericans,regardlessofpartyaffiliation,answeredthattheysupportincreasedproductionofoilandnaturalgasresourceslocatedhereintheUnitedStates.7

Conventional and Unconventional Oil and Natural Gas DevelopmentHistorically,mostoilandnaturalgasdevelopmentintheUnitedStatescanbeconsideredconventional,utilizingmethodspioneeredmorethan150yearsago.Conventionalresourcescanbeextractedbydrilling,throughthepressureofthewellsandpumping,orcompressionoperations.However,conventionalenergyresourceshavebecomehardertoextract,resultinginlessproduction,andthatlowerproductionhasdriventhedevelopmentofunconventionalsourcesofenergy.

Conventionalandunconventionaloilandgascomefromthe same original geologic formations, where sediments accumulatedinmultiplelayersoftheearthovermillionsofyears.8Overtimethesesedimentsformedsedimentaryrocks.Groundpressureandextremelyhightemperaturestransformedtheorganicmattercontainedintheserocklayersintooilandgas.Aslongastheoilandgascanfloweasilythroughporousrock,thereservoiranditsassociatedoilandgas,aswellasthemethodsforextractingit,areconsideredconventional.Whentheoilandgasarelockedintightformationsofimpermeablerock,theresourcesand

themethodsnecessarytoextractthemhavebeenreferredtoasunconventional.

Whiletheprocessismoredifficultandmorecostly,mostoftherecentgrowthinenergyproductionhasbeentheresultofextractingresourcesfromtheseunconventionalformations.Technologicalbreakthroughsinfracturingpumpingwater,sand,andchemicalsintothegroundathighpressuretohydraulicallyfractureorfrackshalerocksandextracttrappedoilandgasandsteerablehorizontaldrilling(incontrasttotheverticaldrillingofconventionalenergydevelopment),aswellassensingandcontrolinformationtechnology,havemadeitcommerciallyviabletofollowtherichestseamstoreleasetightlyboundoilandgas.9ItisthesetechnologicalbreakthroughsthatareresponsibleforrevolutionizingAmericasenergyfuture,makingthedevelopmentoftheseresourcescommonplace,andasaresult,muchmoreconventional.Andtheindustryhasmadegreatstridesinadvancingtheenvironmentalsafetyoffrackingandhorizontaldrilling.

The20largestshaleformationsorplaysarelocatedinsome16states.TheseplaysincludetheBakkenandMarcellusShale,aswellasotheremergingoilornaturalgasplays.ThestatesthatarehometotheseformationsareArkansas,California,Colorado,Kansas,Louisiana,Mississippi,Montana,NewMexico,NorthDakota,Ohio,Oklahoma,Pennsylvania,Texas,Utah,WestVirginia,andWyoming.

ThreeofthebestknownshaleformationsaretheEagleFordShaleinTexas,theMarcellusShaleintheNortheasternUnitedStates,andtheBakkenShale,centeredinNorthDakota.

MarkMillstalksabouttheimpressiveeconomicresultsassociatedwiththeEagleFordShale:Inthe23countiesatoptheEagleFordShale,averagewagesforallcitizenshavegrownby14.6percentannuallysince2005,comparedwiththe6.8and6.3percentaverageforTexasandtheU.S.respectivelyoverthesameperiod.ThetopfivecountiesintheEagleFordShalehaveexperiencedanaverage63percentannualrateofwagegrowth.10

TheMarcellusShaleisnamedforadistinctiveoutcropnearthevillageofMarcellus,NewYork.Inthisregion,fivestatesareconsideredtohavethegreatestpotentialforeconomicbenefits,duelargelytountappednaturalgasreservesclosetohigh-demandmarketsontheEastCoast.Thesestates

Similarly,theBakkenShaleformationranksasoneofthelargestdomesticoildevelopmentsinthepast40years.In2012,NorthDakotabecamethecountryssecondlargestoilproducingstate,behindonlyTexas.Asaresult,thestateenjoyswidespreadeconomicgrowthandthelowestunemploymentrateinthecountry2.6%.11

However,theeconomicbenefitsofunconventionalenergydevelopmentcanalsobeseeninstatessuchasIndianaandDelaware,wherelittleornoenergyproductiontakesplace.InIndiana,forexample,thetotalnumberofjobssupportedbyunconventionalactivitieswas15,973in2012.Thatjobtotalisexpectedtoclimbto27,303in2020andto33,366in2035.InDelaware,thetotalnumberofjobssupportedbyunconventionalenergyactivitiesreached2,195in2012.Thatjobtotalisprojectedtoriseto3,841in2020andto4,907in2035.12

Job Opportunities for Minorities and Women in the Oil and Natural Gas IndustryEmploymentopportunitiesintheoilandnaturalgasindustryareprojectedtoexpanddramaticallyinthecomingyearsforAfricanAmericans,Hispanics,andwomen,accordingtoanewstudyundertakenfortheAmericanPetroleumInstitute.13Thisstudyprojectsthattheoil,naturalgas,andpetrochemical(chemicalproductsderivedfrompetroleum)industrieswillgenerate955,000newdirectjobopportunitiesthrough2020andnearly1.3millionthrough2030.AfricanAmerican,Hispanic,andwomenworkersareexpectedtorepresentavitalportionofthisprojectedgrowthinthelaborforce.Notably,23percentofnewopportunitiesthrough2030areprojectedtobeinscientificandmanagerialpositions,requiringtraininginfieldssuchasengineering,geoscience,management,business,finance,andtechnicalskills.

in2010toonethirdthrough2030.Thisshiftwilltranslateintonearly408,000minorityjobs32percentofthenewjobopportunitiesprojectedthrough2030.Amongjobsinmanagement,business,andfinance,AfricanAmericanandHispanicworkersareexpectedtofillnearly20percentofnewpositions.

In2010,womenworkingintheoil,gas,andpetrochemicalindustriestotaled226,000,representing19percentoftheworkforce.Basedoncurrentandprojectedtrendsinworkforceparticipationratesandeducationalattainment,womenareexpectedtofill185,000oftheprojectedjobopportunitiesthrough2030.Andthesewillbegoodjobsmanyaspetroleumengineers,managers,andotherprofessionals.

Inadditiontowhitecollarjobs,bluecollarpositionsareexpectedtoconstitute63percentofnewjobopportunitiesintheindustrythrough2030.Thisrapidgrowthrepresentsanenormousopportunityforworkerswithhighschooldiplomasandsomepost-secondarytraining(forexample,certificatesorcommunitycollegeeducation)inskillsrelatedtotheindustry.

Vendor Highlights Vendorprofilesreceivedinresponsetothe2014surveyprovideaglimpseintotherichvarietyofbusinessesthatarepartoftheoilandnaturalgassupplychain.Mostaresmallandmidsizebusinesses,thebackboneoftheenergyrevolution.

Forexample,onevendorinGeorgiamanufacturesenvironmentallyfriendlycombustionsolutionsthatreduceemissionsandincreaseefficiency.AvendorinFloridaspecializesinthedesignandconstructionofmobile/modularlaboratoriesandprimarycontainmentequipment.Thesemobilelaboratoriesenablecompaniestoperformcomplexanalyses,helpingcustomerstobemoreefficientinfieldoperations.InMassachusetts,anothervendorhelpsclientsdevelopgeomechanicalmodelstominimizeoperationalriskwhendrillinganddevelopingnewreservoirs.

InNorthCarolina,avendorthatmanufacturesindustrialworkglovesfocusesonimpact-resistanthandcovering,contributingtoasaferworkenvironmentfordrillers.AndinLouisiana,avendorhelpsclientsachieveaninjury-freeworkenvironmentbyprovidingon-sitesafetytechnicians,industrialsafetytrainingservices,andHealth,Safety,andtheEnvironment(HSE)consultants.

productstosupporthydraulicfracturingandhorizontaldrilling.OnevendorinMichiganofferscoatingandmanufacturingexpertisethatgreatlyincreasesthelifeoffracturingpumpcomponents.InKentucky,anothervendorrestoresusedfluidstocustomer-specifiedperformancelevels,makingpossiblehigh-yieldwasterecoveryandlowerunitcosts.AndinPennsylvania,avendorhastreatedandrecycledmorethanonemillionbarrelsofflowbackwater.

Inaddition,thenumberofcompaniesintheoilandnaturalgassupplychainthatfocusonenvironmentalconcernsis
