Economist Philip H. Brown on the Ford Foundation

Supporting those “on the frontlines of social change worldwide,” the Ford Foundation provides grants and loans to entities that

subscribe to its mission. Focusing on regions in need of development, this group holds

values such as promoting democracy, social justice, and freedom of expression; reducing poverty; enhancing cooperation from bodies

across the world; and developing equal economic opportunities.

Created in 1936 by a $25,000 gift from Edsel Ford, the Ford Foundation judges around

40,000 applications annually. While approximately 1,400 grants are issued every year, the totals range from several thousand

The recipient of a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Michigan,

economist Philip H. Brown has held positions at the International Food Policy Research

Institute and Colby College. Active in numerous research endeavors, Dr. Brown

acquired a grant from the Ford Foundation to study China’s New Cooperative Medical

System.
