Enclosed is a card from one of theseimporters refusing to furnish parts. Isthis a sample of the service most of thesuppliers of the foreign radios will giveus? Is there not a law against selling aproduct such as this and not havingavailable replacement parts for same?Please advise.

Job Evades Technician

I have four years experience in mili-tary radar electronics, and experience intelevision servicing and electrical wiring.In spite of this. I cannot find employ-ment. I have written numerous com-panies, and they either say I have thewrong kind of experience or they don'tneed me. I have an excellent record forthe experience I have, including a mili-tary supervisor's letter of recommenda-tion.

I have a straight "A" record for maththrough one year of college. I took atest when I finished high school whenbeing considered for engineering schoolby an electric utility company. Theyrecommended that I get into research-but didn't say how.

I often read about a shortage ofelectronics technicians, but I find itdifficult to believe. I am wondering ifI made a mistake in getting into theelectronics field . . . If my experience isinsufficient, I feel sorry for the "greenhorn."

They even place largesigns on the front of their business stat-ing that they sell to anyone at wholesale.Now this has hurt us service dealersjust as much as the drug store tuberacket-not only the drug store but de-partment store, hardware, grocery, andwhat -have -you stores. All have donetheir share in hurting service technicians.Some of the wholesale firms haveserved me well and I have good friendsamong them. Some have not served meso well.

Auto repair cannot be compared withTV -radio service. Here is what I mean.I was called on to repair a TV set thatwas dead. After replacing the fuse andchecking for shorts, I made out a bill for$5 for service, and 15 cents for a fuse. Ihanded thi bill to the customer and leftwith a satisfied customer behind. Onanother call I noticed the fuse wasmissing from the set. After looking forsome time around inside the cabinet, Istarted looking on the floor. There wasthe fuse-at the edge of the carpet. Oneof those lock -in fuses had come loose andbounced out without being noticed. I re-placed it, handed the customer a bill for$5 service, and left with another cus-tomer happy. Sometimes, though, a manspends quite a bit of time on a call andgets $5. What has he made? He mustsell some tubes to come out even.

I for one do not believe in serviceassociations. They usually end up dis-criminating against the little man. Theywould be all right if run properly.

I don't think the profit on picturetubes is too high. I get from $5 to $7.50for installing one. I would like to hearfrom some of your other readers on thesubjects mentioned here.

FACTORY SALES OF RADIO AND TV SETS inSeptember were the highest reported for any of the firstnine months of 1962, according to the EIA. Sales ofradios, excluding auto radios, were 1,255,346 units, upfrom the 848,881 units sold in August. TV set salesnumbered 731,100 units, up from the 518,000 of Au-gust. Sales of picture tubes also reached a nine -monthhigh in September, when 866,512 tubes were shippedfrom factories. Sales figures for October will be releasedearly this month.

REVERE CAMERA'S NEW MAGNETIC TAPE RE-CORDER, which can automatically play a stack of upto 20 stereo tape cartridges, will soon be marketed na-tionally. Bell Telephone Laboratories has announced a new type of microphonethat acts as its own amplifier and is supposed to be at least fourtimes more sensitive than the carbon telephone transmitter (the mostsensitive microphone now in use). The new microphone uses noelectromagnetic coils or carbon granules. Its main parts are a dia-phragm, a sapphire stylus and a 'unction transistor. Acoustic energyis funneled through the diaphragm to the stylus, which transmits varia-tions in pressure to the emitter surface of the transistor.

THE FUTURE OF THE SPEAKER industry looks"grim indeed" unless it develops products and programsbetter to serve its markets and takes steps to lift loud-speaker quality, William H. Bingham, of Hawley Prod-ucts Co., told the EIA Fourth Loudspeaker IndustryConference recently. He said the current industry de-bate over a system for measuring and rating loudspeakerquality has laid bare three very important industry weak-nesses: (1) lack of adequate testing equipment and faci-lities; (2) standard testing procedures; and (3) standardsfor measuring sound quality.

SYNCOM, TO BE THE FIRST HIGH ALTITUDEsynchronous communications satellite, is undergoingfinal testing in preparation for launch early this year.Built by Hughes Aircraft Co. for the National Aero-nautics and Space Administration, the satellite will gointo an orbit 22,300 miles above the earth. At thisaltitude, the spacecraft's speed will match the speed ofthe earth's rotation, so Syncom will appear to hoverabove the earth giving uninterrupted service 24 hoursa day. Hughes engineers are currently working on an

The cameras'circuits are completely transistorized except for thevidicon pickup tube and a single sub -miniature tube inthe video input section, according to the company.Video performance of the models TE-14 and TE-15include center horizontal resolution of 650 lines, mini-mum; usable picture with scene brightness down to two -foot -lamberts; and high stability from regulated criticalvoltages and transistorization.

BECAUSE OF THE TREMENDOUS GROWTHof CB radio in recent years, the FCC is preparingseveral rule changes which it hopes will better regulatethe service. In 1962 alone, a total of 170,000 CBlicense applications were received by the FCC. Thus,the FCC feels it must tighten regulations to preventthe service from rendering itself useless. Some of theproposed changes are the shortening of time limits onconversations; prohibiting conversations concerningtechnical performance of equipment; communicationsto "any stations that might be listening"; and generallyto spell out citizens band regulations by going intodetail rather than rely upon general rules, which forthe most part, now regulate CB.

DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES encounteredduring pilot production, RCA's Electron Tube Div. willbe unable to deliver its new 90 -degree round color pic-ture tube as a commercial product this coming springas originally planned. The notice, given to TV set manu-facturers in December, said it will be another 9 to 15months before reliability goals set for the new tubecan be met. The 90 -degree tube would considerably re-duce the depth of color TV sets, which up to now usea 70 -degree version.

THE FCC HAS SET APRIL 30, 1964 as the cutoffdate, after which all TV sets shipped in interstate com-merce, must meet the all -channel UHF requirements.

is needed to prevent damage to the vertical outputtransformer caused by the extremely high amplitudevertical spike. It is accomplished as follows:

During pulse time, capacitor C21 connected to theplate of the vertical Varistor resistance decreases caus-ing the capacitor C21 charging current to increase.Hence, the vertical pulse amplitude is reduced (damped)by the capacitor C21 and varistor R39.

However, during the time between pulses just thereverse situation exists. The potential appearing acrosscapacitor C21 and varistor R39 is low. This low poten-tial then causes the varistor resistance to increase. Hencethe effect of the capacitor C21-varistor R39 shuntpath is lessened resulting in no appreciable loadingor damping of the sweep voltage during line time.

Model 2250 Tap. Recorder - VU Meter Adjustment

The following procedure should be used to adjustthe VU meter on this model: Remove the control knobsand control escutcheon assembly. Connect an audiosignal generator to "Mic Input Ch. 1" jack (J2). Turnthe tape recorder on and adjust vol. 1 control to atleast 3/4 of full clockwise rotation. Depress "RightRecord Safety Lock" and move slightly to the right tolock in place. Rotate the "Monitor" control fully clock-wise. Connect an a -c VTVM with at least 11 Mohmsinput resistance to "Ext. Amp. Ch. 1" jack (J5). Turnthe meter selector control to "Ch. 1." Adjust the signalgenerator for 1000 cps and approximately 2 on theVTVM. Adjust the meter level control (R-28), on themechanism chassis, until the VU meter reads 100 per-cent (0 db). Replace the control escutcheon assemblyand the control knobs.

A 17JZ8 compactron is used as a plate -coupledmultivibrator in the V-2438 chassis with one part of themultivibrator serving as the output tube. The deflectionyoke used in the chassis is not "saddle" wound as mostyokes are. It is "toroid" wound.

The saddle wound vertical winding provides an L toR ratio of about 1 to 1 while the toroid vertical windingprovides a higher ratio of about 2 to 1. By using a toroidtype of winding, the higher L to R ratio makes thevertical winding less sensitive to heat. This in turneliminates the previously -used thermistor across thevertical winding.

Are You Ready for '63?Outstanding business and financial experts were

unusually mute this last year-end. The vocal -few spokesoftly and conservatively: "We see nothing on the im-mediate horizon," they said, in effect, "to indicate animportant slide -off in business in the near future." Con-sensus predicts general business activity for the firsthalf of 1963 at or near the average level for '62.

Whatever the future may bring, for TV -radio serv-ice -dealers and technicians, one thing is certain: compe-tition will be keener. Some will not have the know-howand fortitude to continue operations-others will pros-per. Your chances for prosperity will be determinedlargely by what you do and when you do it. Waiting to"see what happens" can be a major step in the directionof failure.

It is not too late to do the important things younever got around to last year. What happened to thatresolution, for example, to organize your customers intoan "auxiliary sales force?" Those who have tried it havere -discovered an old but formidable competition -stop-per. It begins working for you when you begin givingyour cusiomers a little better service for the same dollar.It continues to work for you when you continue withconsistent and courteous treatment. It grows when you

convince your customers by your actions that you aresincerely interested in solving all of their TV, radio andHi Fi complaints. Don't leave the impression that youare eager to take their money and get rid of them.

And how about that decision you made, but nevercarried out, to diversify a little with CB radio? Well, therecords indicate that citizens band equipment sales for1962 will just about double those of 1961. Someservice -dealers and technicians have reported livelybusiness in CB equipment. It may repeat in 1963.

What happened to that rough plan you draftedfor time studies on house calls, pick-ups and deliveries,shop work and other chores, including your own activi-ties? Remember, you were going to beat the competitionby higher over-all productivity through scheduling traveltime, planning the service day in advance, and reorgan-izing the shop for more efficient operation. And that1963 budget? Do you have it ready as a plan, a guide,a control-designed to help you achieve your majoraim-a decent profit-for the new year? It's a little latebut you can still get under the wire if you act fast.

If you act now and keep moving you won't havetime to worry about over-all business conditions andthe keen competition in 1963.

Our Stake in UHFThe Federal Communications Commission has fin-

ished preliminary tests on channel 31 in N. Y. City.The report reveals few, if any, technical facts thatwere not already known. UHF compares favorablywith VHF and will take care of the nation's tele-casting job. With simple outside antennas UHF provedto be better than VHF under certain standards. Withindoor antennas New York's channel 2 and 7 provedslightly better than channel 31, according to the FCC.

Some sources have reported that the FCC foundchannel 31 inferior to VHF 2 and 7. This is, to para-phrase Voltaire, shaping the feet to fit the socks. Butthere is method in this news -distorting madness.

Despite the need for changes, one group wouldlike to maintain the TV spectrum status quo. They havealways argued that UHF is inferior to VHF in mostrespects.

Another group would like to grab a large portionof the UHF spectrum for temporarily solving theirprivate problems. They have a very special argument

which has been handed to them ready-made.Some years ago the FCC authorized and set aside

267 outlets across the country to be used exclusivelyfor educational purposes. Most channels are in theUHF spectrum. Less than 100 of these ETV outletshave been activated-primarily because some back-ward -thinking educators and government officials havenot recognized the dynamic potential of TV for rapidlyup -grading our educational system. So, says the lattergroup, these channels should be released to someonewho will use them!

UHF TV frequencies belong to this nation's news,entertainment and educational systems. VHF TV chan-nels can be moved to the UHF spectrum. Frequenciesfrom 54 to 216 Mc can thus be released. Industrial,business and other vital mobile services need thesefrequencies.

It is the FCC's duty to see that changes in theVHF/UHF regions are made in the nation's best long-range interest.

If it becomes necessary to adjustthe transmitter's modulation devi-ation observe the signal on an FCCapproved modulation deviationmonitor and adjust the speech -level(modulation) control for a maximumof ± 5 kc for narrow -band, or± 15 kc for wide -band units. Inan emergency, another radio re-ceiver can be used for approximateadjustment.

After making frequency and mod-ulation checks, the next step is tocheck the multiplier stages. To checkoperation of these stages, take read-ings at J103, 4, 5, and 6 (Fig. 1)

with a VTVM or a metering testset. If no reading is obtained at anyof these jacks, trouble is probablycaused by a blown fuse or failurein the power supply. If readings areobtained that do not agree withthose called for in the set's servicedata, the trouble is probably in thestage feeding the grid at which anincorrect reading appears. Referringto Fig. 1, if a proper reading ap-pears at J103 #4, but a low read-ing is indicated at #5, V103 triplerstage is weak.

Power Amplifier ChecksTo check the power amplifier

stage, connect the meter from J103#7 to J103 #8. Normal plate cur-rent is about 0.15 amperes as indi-cated by a reading of 1.5 v. Lowervalues may be caused by low plate

voltage, a defective tube, improperantenna loading, or insufficient griddrive. To check the power ampli-fier's plate voltage, set the meter onthe high range, connect the negativemeter lead to the chassis, and thepositive head to J103 #7. The metershould read 400 v or better. To cal-culate power input to the final stagein watts, measure the final amplifierplate current and plate voltage; useohms power law, P=EI, to obtainappmximate input.

Transmitter AlignmentThe first step in aligning a two-

way radio transmitter is to peak the1st tunable coil in the frequencymultipliers. In Fig. 1 this would bethe first doubler (T1). This assumes,of course, that the transmitter's os-cillator frequency is known to be ac-curate.

While observing the meterplugged between J103 #4 andground, key the transmitter on and(with the tune -operate switch in thetune position) adjust the primaryslug from the transformer bottom,for a maximum reading. Adjust thesecondary slug from the transformertop for a maximum meter reading.Now repeak the primary and sec-ondary for maximum meter read-ing. The circuit is tuned to twotimes the crystal frequency.

the higher of the two frequenciesemployed. On completion of align-ment, each output should bechecked for proper performance.In specific cases where channel sep-arations exceed 120 kc, and the low-er frequency is used more often thanthe higher, it is preferable to alignthe unit on the lower frequency.

The next step in alignment is ad-justment of the tripler (V103) stage.This stage multiplies the 1st doubleroutput frequency three times (6times the crystal frequency). Againkey the transmitter on and meterJ103 #5 and adjust the primaryslug of this stage from the trans-former bottom (T2) for a maximummeter reading. Adjust the secondaryslug from the transformer top fora peak meter reading. Repeak theprimary and secondary.

After obtaining a satisfactorytripler reading, meter J103 #6 andadjust the primary and secondaryslugs of T3 for maximum reading.This indicates that V104 is workingproperly. You will notice that whilemetering J103 #6 with the trans-mitter off a slight meter reading willbe present. This is a fixed bias volt-age designed to prevent the poweramplifier from "running away"should the final amplifier plate volt-age be applied with no drive fromthe double -driver V-104 available.If the transmitter is turned on witha dead stage preceding the final am -

plifier, the amplifier tube may welldraw too much plate current and bedestroyed. As long as drive is avail-able, the bias is not utilized and ismerely a safeguard. Since this biasis present on the final grid at alltimes, it must be taken into con-sideration when tuning. Properalignment of T3 will be indicatedby a definite peak on the meter.

To align the power amplifier(V105) insert the positive probe ofthe meter in J103 #7, and the neg-ative probe in #8. Key the trans-mitter on and adjust antenna trim-mer capacitor C-121 counter -clock-wise for minimum coupling as indi-cated by a minimum meter reading.Turn the output coupling adjust-ment of L-2 counter -clockwise todecouple the dummy load, and ad-just the power amplifier tuning cap-acitor C-120 for a "dip" (minimumreading) on the meter. When themeter has been dipped, place the

tune -operate switch in the operateposition.

To align the output circuit, adjustthe amplifier plate circuit couplingto the RF load by turning antennatrimmer C-121 until a maximumreading has been obtained on themeter. Couple the RF plate circuitto an RF wattmeter or a dum-my load (50) ohms capable of dis-sipating 30 w). Couple the am-plifier plate circuit to the antenna(or dummy load) for desiredRF output by turning coupling ad-justment L-2 clockwise until thetransmitter is loaded to the desiredRF power output as indicated on thewattmeter. (Do not exceed 125 xriaplate current on the final while mak-ing these adjustments. Also, neverallow the final to operate with morethan 125 ma at any time, as thiswill shorten tube life.)

Readjust the antenna trimmercapacitor C-121 for a reading ofabout 30 w.

Now connect the antenna used innormal service to the set's antennaconnector. Turn the coupling ad-justment clockwise and adjust theamplifier's tuning capacitor C-120through resonance. (Resonance isindicated by the lowest dip in themeter reading.) Now gradually in-crease the coupling to a point wherethere is only a slight dip in meterreading when tuning through res-onance. This will indicate the pointof maximum output.

If the transmitter is overcoupledto the antenna the plate current dipwill disappear and actual power out-put will be below maximum value.Also, a false dip may occur whichwill not be coincident with maxi-mum radiation.

To ascertain the correct point formaximum power output and bestefficiency, an RF wattmeter shouldbe used as described in the preced-ing paragraphs.

CB Rules

and Regulations

Part 15 and part 19 of the FCC Rules and Regula-tions are being confused by both buyer and technician.It is strongly recommended that a copy of each be ob-tained from the FCC; in fact, for license holders,reading part 19 is a sworn requirement.

To clarify some of these rules, let's go over a fewimportant points contained in these parts. Part 19 is ofparticular importance; it is sometimes referred to as theCB Commandments. Most of the rules are clear-cut.Others have been mis-interpreted and in some cases,law suits have been brought against the offenders. Itshouldn't be your aim to try to get around these rules,so we will clarify them as law suits, and as certain FCCorders have shown, they were intended. These ruleswill undoubtedly be rewritten in the near future.

Under no conditions is working DX legal. If you'rein Podunck, Fla. and hear an illegal CQ call from

California, forget it. You are not allowed to answeror solicit such communications even though certainskip conditions sometimes make such communicationspractical.

Operating a CB rig during the interim while alicense is pending is not allowed. You must have aposted license anytime you operate a CB transmitter.Part 15 rules deal with limited radiation devices (under100 mw) which do not require licenses but must becertified for proper maximum power.

The use of profane language is also prohibited. Thesame rules which apply to amateur and commercialradio operators apply here. Derogatory or inflammatoryremarks against racial and religious groups are similarlyprohibited.

You may not loan your license to another operator.This is true even if the other operator is licensed.

There is a definite time limit for all CB trans-missions. You must give your call letters at the be-ginning and end of each of these five minute send andreceive periods. After five minutes the channel must becleared. After a reasonable period to allow someoneelse to use the channel, the other party may be con-tacted for another five minute period.

Abuse of these rules will only lead to tighteningof CB regulations which may make it difficult or im-possible for others to obtain a license.

Transmitter crystal oscillator frequencies fochannels 1 through 22. Channel 23 is a

shared channel operating on the same fre-quency as 22. Receiver crystals are generallycut to 455 Kc higher than transmitter crystals.

CB Transceiver Maintenance

The most likely cause would be afault in the switching circuits atthe antenna input and the trans-mitter tank coil. Normal hiss wouldbe present from the mixer -oscil-lator and power out would be verylow if, for example, a ground werepresent in the coil circuit.

Similar malfunctions are almostas prevalent as receivers. Using thistype of analysis, you should nothave trouble finding the faulty sec-tion. Working on the remainder ofthe receiver should offer no prob-lems to the average technician

which he would not encounter in atable radio. Noise limiting andsquelch circuits are the only addi-tions.

Noise limiters are usually nomore than a simple clipping circuit.

Squelch systems, often manuallyadjustable, frequently operate di-rectly from the AGC circuit. A lowagc voltage causes the squelch cir-cuit to keep audio amplifiers biasedoff until a signal drives the agcabove the present manual level. Sev-eral other squelch systems are used,however. The next most popular

There is probably no one in thecommunications service field whodoesn't know the significance ofOhm's law and how to use it forsimple calculations. Aside from the pattern effect, theposition of the loading coil greatlyaffects the antenna's strength. Bot-tom loaded coils are most popular,though they are usually incorpo-rated because they are sturdy andcomparatively inexpensive. Themaximum current in the bottomloaded antenna is near the bottom.Since our effort is to propagate thesignal from a maximum height, thisis not the most desirable loadingcoil position.

The top loaded antenna propa-gates the most signal from the tipof the antenna. This is very desir-able. The heavy loading coil locatedat the top of the antenna, however,causes some antenna ridgidity prob-lems and makes the antenna moreexpensive.

The center loaded antenna is acompromise. Its characteristics arehalf -way between the bottom andtop loaded types. Its cost is similarlybetween the others.

Installation

Installation of mobile antennas isprimarily determined by the type ofantenna selected, the vehicle it is tobe mounted on and the preferenceof the user. Manufacturers' instruc-tions are usually quite explicit andshould be carefully followed. A goodground to the base of the antennais a must. Don't forget to scrapeaway the paint around the mountinghole or to clean the surface of un-painted mounts.

Running coax for the antennafeed is usually simplified by follow-ing the route of existing coil wiring.Base station antennas, because theyare fixed, allow the installer to cor-rect for many deficiencies found inmobile installations. A much greaterheight and more rigidity can be at-tained, for. example.

FCC regulations should be con-sulted to determine restrictions formaximum height for the radio corn -

munications to be used. I -or ex-ample, CB antenna heights are re-stricted to a maximum of 20 ft aboveexisting structures. Some installa-tions may be restricted in height be-cause of the proximity of an airport.Others may require special lightsatop the antenna. These regulationsmay be obtained by writing to theFCC in Washington, D. C.

Coaxial antenna runs should belimited to 100 ft if possible. Everyft attenuates the radiated power andthe signal received. If an advantagecan be gained, either better line -of -sight or more height, for instance,the increased length of the antenna'sfeed line may more than compen-sate for the loss.

Special antenna switches areavailable, or they may be made upfrom a coaxial relay to switch be-tween non -directional and beam orbetween different beams. Some sta-tions use a long wire for receiving

Walkie-talkie type transceivers are enjoying anall-time high in popularity since CB radio became prac-tical. When used with other low -powered units no li-cense for operation is needed and there are no operatingrestrictions.

The range of use for these units is wide; TV techni-cians and antenna installers have found them helpfulin adjusting antenna position, and at the other end ofthe gamut, sportsmen have found them valuable to keepin touch with one another and to quarry game (thispractice is prohibited in some states). Obviously, the

sales and service potential for these units is very great.Technicians with a second class FCC radio -telephone

license are missing a relatively easy -to -learn additionto their income by not selling and servicing these units.Although the markup is not high compared to otherelectronic items, service rewards are good. In mostcases, the only necessary equipment will be a goodVTVM. Crystal control for both transmit and receivesimplify alignment to one or two peaking adjustments.

An example of alignment simplicity is shown bythe instructions in one manufacturer's service literature:

"Connect (a) dc milliammeter in series with thesupply voltage and the units under test. Remove coverand extend the whip antenna to its full height. With ahex type alignment tool turn core of T6 counterclock-wise until core is extended one-half its length from thecoil form. Turn unit on. Press the PUSH -TO -TALKSWITCH to transmit position. Slowly turn core of T6clockwise while observing milliammeter. Continue turn-ing core clockwise until meter reads 22 ma. This com-pletes the adjustment for the transmitter section.

The receiver adjustment is even simpler. A voltmeteris connected to a point in the unit and a coil slug isturned for a peak reading.

It's not too late to get in on the sales of these unitsif you haven't already done so. Transceivers now on themarket range in price from less than $10 to more than$100; within the price range of anyone who can afford apocket radio. It probably won't be too long before theTV and radio technician will be expected to service thisequipment-and almost as frequently as he would atransistor radio.

Many alert TV -radio and indus-trial electronic technicians will findthis story "old hat." Others, withmodest imagination, may find it pos-sible to stretch this single idea intoa thriving two-way radio business.

Some time ago, Paul Kessler,owner of the Village Pharmacy inIrvington, N. J., installed a two-wayradio in his drug store and in hisdelivery wagon. He planned to off-set competition from other drugstores in this area by offering fasterservice. Like many other two-wayradio owners, Kessler is sold on theidea.

Besides the increase in prescrip-tion business which he estimates tobe about 15 percent, the conveni-ence has been well worth the costof installation and maintenance.

"It's a simple matter," Kesslersaid, "to call my delivery man topick up one or more prescriptionsif telephone calls come in while heis out. This has boosted my serviceefficiency and resulted in many newcustomers."

"In addition," Kessler stated, "ifproblems arise while the driver isout, he can call the store for clarifi-cation or instructions."

Since more deliveries can now bemade in less time, Kessler pointedout that his driver can spend moreof his time helping in the store.

Loss of sync or weak sync candevelop from trouble in almost anypart of the TV set. Even externalinterference or antenna problemscan cause sync instability. Locatingand correcting such problems re-quires a thorough understanding ofsync pulse composition, its progressthrough the receiver and the set'ssync requirements.

As we all know, the purpose ofthe sync pulse is to synchronizethe receiver's vertical and horizontalscan rates with the scan frequencyemployed in the TV camera. Fail-ure to obtain proper sync resultsin problems familiar to most alltechnicians: Rolling, tearing, pie -crusting or christmas tree effects.Any of these terrorize the noviceTV technician; usually because thefault is not the result of total com-ponent failure.

FIX THAT

But the experienced TV tech-nician has his share of difficultieswith sync systems too. For the mostpart, possibly, from a lack of basicknowledge of the operation of syncamplifiers, clippers or separators,and special noise canceling circuits.And partly, from his disbelief thatthe sync pulse could be weakenedor destroyed in the video portionof a receiver when an otherwisenormal or good quality picture ispresent. Let's try to justify the cau-tions to check the video circuitryfound in almost every text on syncsystem maintenance.

Sync Pulse ConstructionSince both vertical and horizontal

scans must be synchronized by syncpulses, two sets of pulses are re-quired; one at the vertical rate, an-other at the horizontal rate. Both

oscillators are normally set to oper-ate at a slightly lower frequencythan their normal scanning rate.When the sync pulse is applied tothe oscillator, it is "pulled in" tothe proper frequency.

Additional problems arise, how-ever, during vertical retrace timein such a simple system. To preventthe horizontal oscillator from run-ning off frequency, horizontal ratepulses are superimposed on the ver-tical blanking and sync pulse. Inthe absence of these pulses, "hook-ing" or "flag waving" occurs atthe top of the picture.

Interlace is accomplished byequalizing pulses inserted in the ver-tical blanking interval which main-tain the exact starting time for thehorizontal oscillator. A compositedrawing of the sync waveform isshown in Fig. 1.

Since all of the pulses during thevertical blanking time are the sameamplitude, an integrator is used toselect the proper time for the verti-cal oscillator to begin. Equalizingpulses are too short to allow the in-tegrator to develop a charge of suf-ficient amplitude to trigger the ver-tical oscillator. The vertical syncpulse is serrated, forming pulsesabout twice as wide as the equal-izing pulses which allow the inte-grator to charge. When the properlevel is reached at the integratoroutput, the oscillator begins con-duction.

To maintain a perfect odd -linerelationship between vertical andhorizontal scans to allow interlacethe sync pulses are generated froma common oscillator with dividercircuits feeding separate sweep os-cillators. This is illustrated in Fig

2. Since the relationship for 60 cpsscan is odd (525 horizontal linesper frame) every other field is thesame length; alternating between262 and 263 scan lines. Each frameis composed of two interlaced fields.

TroubleshootingNow, where does this informa-

tion get us? It simply shows howcomplex a simple process can be.And what critical set areas to lookat when a particular sync troubledevelops. For example, supposepoor interlace (line pairing) is aproblem. Where do you look? Weknow that the timing sequencewhich regulates the odd -line rela-tionship between the horizontal andvertical scan rates causes interlace.Assuming the ratio at the stationis normal, one of the triggeringcircuits in the set is at fault.

Basically, only one circuit deter-mines this ratio: the integratorcircuit. If the time constant of theintegrator circuit changes, equaliz-ing pulses may charge the integratorand trigger the vertical oscillatortoo early. The best method to lo-cate an integrator malfunction is tochange the integrator unit or eachintegrator part to eliminate it. Ofcourse, an integrator malfunctioncan cause total loss of sync too.

On interlace problems it is wiseto check all channels. Often lackof interlace is a station fault. Oftenturning the vertical and horizontalholds slightly sometimes correctspoor interlace.

If both the horizontal and verti-cal sections show a tendency to jit-ter, roll, tear or completely losesync, the chances are good that async system malfunction is present.

Do not rule out this possibility,however, if only one section showssymptoms of poor sync. Most ofyou get this far on every synctroubled set without a hitch. Theproblem however, is what to donow!

The starting point is largely amatter of preference to individualtechnicians. Some start at the syncamplifier output, and some at thesync take -off point. It is probablybest to start at the input to thesync separator unless you particu-larly favor another procedure. Start-ing at the input to the sync separa-tor with a scope shows the con-dition of the composite signal andwhether both of the sync pulses arepresent. This is simpler than start-ing at a point deeper in the syncsystem, say the sync amplifier, andthen wondering whether the syncamplitudes are sufficient. Most al-ways this followed by going back-wards to the sync separator to checkgains, etc.

Manufacturers' waveforms areusually given showing sync shapeand amplitudes; these waveformsare very important. Care shouldbe taken to assure that the ampli-tude and shape of the pulses arewithin tolerance of the waveformshown.

Suppose that the input to thesync separator shows that the syncpulses are almost totally absent.Where do we go from here? Themost obvious answer is "back-wards"-toward the IF. But howfar to go and what to expect whenyou arrive there is the stopper.

Tubes in the path of the signalshould, of course, be changed be-fore extensive troubleshooting isbegun. Generally, a tube tester isan adequate check for tubes in the

sync circuits but only substitutionshould be used in the IF strip. Gas-sy tubes are the most frequent of-fenders in this section and are dif-ficult to detect with the averagetube tester. If tubes are available,however, substitution is the bestcheck in any section of the set.Since the problem may be severalgassy or poor tubes, all tubes shouldbe substituted simultaneously andthen removed one at a time.

Any defect in the quality of thepicture should be used as a clue tothe sync difi iculty. Except in stub-born cases the picture can be ob-served momentarily by careful ad-justment of the hold controls. Ifthis is not possible, the scope willhave to be employed. This isanother example of why it pays tobe familiar with scope TV wave-forms.

Finding the problem -stage is notusually difficult if a careful analysisis made of each wave form. Atthis point many technicians beginchanging each part in the stage inan effort to correct the malfunction.This is time consuming and notvery economical.

Pin -pointing the Fault

Ons:c the area of fault has beendecided upon, voltage measure-ments are the best checks availableto the technician to help him pin-point the faulty component or com-ponents.

Again, manufacturers' serviceliterature is a must. When this isnot available, the technician must

rely on experience and informationhe can gain from measurements ofnormal similar circuits or even nor-mal operating configurations foundin a tube manual. A word of cau-tion here: Some tubes in the syncsection of TV receivers are not op-erated in the linear portion of theircharacteristic curve. This is espe-cially true in sync separator or clip-per stages where the video falls inthe cut-off portion of the curvewhile the sync pulses are passed andamplified.

Learning some causes of mal-function in sync systems and associ-ating them with the problem at handis often helpful. In most cases thesymptoms won't be identical, butwill help you find the problem areasby their similarity. Let's look atsome of the common problems andsee what can be learned from them.

Pie-crusting-A symptom whichis easily recognizable by the shapefound in vertical -line objects in thepicture content. Basically, all ver-tical -line objects take on a hori-zontal dimension which may be assmall as a fraction of an in. tomore than 2 in. Both sides of thepicture look like the edges of acrimped pie crust like mother usedto make.

Pie -crust symptoms are generatedbecause the horizontal oscillator is"hunting" between a range of fre-quencies on both sides of the exactfrequency. The fault will be foundin the anti -hunt circuitry in theAFC section of the receiver. Anti -

REJUVENATOR

Emission tests and checks forshorts or opens can be made onCRTs with almost any free pointswitching type tube tester. At thesame time, many multiple sockettesters will test CRT emission andeven rejuvenate CRTs.

Most commercial rejuvenatorsplace 800 to 1000 v on the CRTgrids with the negative side of thishigh voltage on the cathode. TheCRT heater voltage is temporarilyraised 20 to 50 percent. Thus, thecathode is heated above normal andemission is accelerated momentarily,effectively cleaning the cathode andmaking a more abundant supply offree electrons available. The aper-ture in the grid and anodes may alsobe burned open at this time; thispermits greater emission when thetube is put back in use.

The circuit in Fig. 1 shows howhigh dc voltage can be obtainedfrom a tube tester. The tester usedis a low priced emission type, butthe circuit will be the same for al-most any unit. Merely locate thepower transformer tap which givesabout 250 vac and feed this to ahalf -wave voltage doubler. Thedoubler's dc output is applied to theCRT to be tested. When 250 v RMSis doubled and filtered, the dc out-put is about 700 v.

A 25Z6 is plugged into the sparesocket which is wired for the 25Z6in a voltage doubler circuit. Dou-bling can also be accomplished withunder -the -panel silicon rectifiers.

When a CRT requires rejuvena-tion, the 25Z6 is plugged into thespecially wired socket and the reg-ular set up for CRT testing is car-ried out. After reading the emis-sion, the filament voltage is in-creased and Si is pressed for 2 to5 seconds applying the dc to thegrids. SI is a SPDT push button(Mallory 1013, or similar type)which is mounted on the tube test-er panel.

Filament voltage for the 25Z6must be obtained separately becauseof the high voltage on the outputcathode. A 25 v filament transform-er is mounted under the panel (aStancor P6496, or comparabletype) and the electrolytic capacitorsneeded in the voltage doubler are

mounted beneath the tester's panel.This circuit is adaptable to most

tube testers and gives good results.If desired, a rotary switch can beinserted between the voltage dou-bler and the power transformer tapsfor selection of lower voltages. Thiswould permit a "gentle treatment"for quick responding CRTs.

The same care is necessary in us-ing this rejuvenator as with anyother. Do not over -do it. A seriesof short shots with emission testsin between is best. Increase theheater voltage one step at a time asneeded. Return the heater voltageto normal when testing for emis-sion. If the emission fails to improve,it's time to recommend a CRTplacement.

Second to sync troubles, per-haps no other section in the TVreceiver causes the technician asmany headaches as the horizontaloutput system. It is difficult todraw a line showing where the hor-izontal output section overlaps orbecomes a part of another section.For discussion, let us arbitrarilyinclude the oscillator output cir-cuitry, the horizontal output tube,the high voltage system and asso-ciated circuitry. The later, ofcourse, includes the damper, yoke,flyback, high voltage rectifier andits component parts.

Functions of the aforementionedcircuitry is no mystery to most tech-nicians. A saw -type voltage is fedfrom the horizontal oscillator tothe horizontal output tube where itis amplified and matched to theyoke's impedance through the fly-back transformer. A by-productof the rapid flux change in the fly-back transformer during retrace isa high voltage spike which isstepped up through an auto -trans-former winding in the flyback. Thishigh voltage spike is rectified and

fed to the second anode of the CRT.The damper circuitry is em-

ployed to damp normal resonantyoke - flyback oscillations whichform the left (first portion) of thesweep.

Insufficient width is the mostobvious horizontal symptom. It iseasy for many technicians to con-fuse other symptoms with the ver-tical or sync section of the set.Some of the rarer and less obvioussymptoms are illustrated here. Theyinclude: The keystoned raster,which has a trapezoidal shape;the "hour glass" or severe "cokebottle" effect; "S" bending; wrin-kling and a thin vertical line.

Arcing and BendsMalfunctions in horizontal out-

put systems can cause almost everyconceivable symptom that affectswidth (or modulation) of the sweepor the sweep's brightness. In somecases, it can affect sync, AGC orvertical stability. Arcing may causesound and picture problems even inanother TV set. And conversely,some circuit configurations may

allow a vertical or sound problemto kill the high voltage.

Inaudible arcing in the high volt-age circuit often causes problemswhich are difficult to track down.Usually, the technician spends timein the video circuits before he getson the right track. Arcing is gen-erally evidenced by short blackand white interference lines in thepicture. Continuous arcing, how-ever, may smear the picture givingit poor resolution with symptomsindicating poor IF alignment.

Arcing is sometimes difficult todetect. If it is suspected, the fol-lowing procedure should be used:Listen carefully. Arcing soundslike a high pitched buzz. To lo-calize such arcing, roll a piece ofpaper into a tube about one in.in diameter. With the tube placednext to the ear, move the end ofthe tube around the high voltagecircuits. When the buzz is loudest,you have located the area of arc.Internal transformer arcing may bedifficult to locate in this manner.

If the arc can not be located bylistening, examine the high voltage

area in a darkened room. Somearcs deep inside the flyback can beseen as a tiny blue or orange light.Finally, after the set has operatedfor a short time, feel the high volt-age components. Although mostcomponents will be warm, noneshould be hot. Heating of the fly-back transformer is almost alwayscaused by a faulty flyback trans-former if the output tube drive isnormal.

If both of these methods fail, agenerous coating of anti -coronadope is sometimes effective.

Raster bending takes severalforms. Three types are most com-mon, however; "S" bending whichis unaffected by the picture con-tent; "S" bending which changesdepending on the picture black andwhite ratio; and coke bottle or hourglass bending. The type of bend-ing which is unaffected by picturecontent may move through the pic-ture from top to bottom or viceversa. "S" bending is also some-times incorrectly referred to as"flag-waving" or "hooking."

A scope is usually the fastest

way to find the cause in any typeof bending. In many cases, theVOM or VTVM will show voltageand resistance measurements to benormal even though the cathode orgrid elements of the output tube isbeing ac modulated.

Bends in step with video changesare always caused by a "leak" be-tween some video stage and a hor-izontal circuit. Most frequently,it is caused by a partially openelectrolytic or component valuechange in the sync or oscillator cir-cuitry. This type of malfunctionis not classified as a horizontal out-put problem.

The causes of constant bends, orbends which may drift through thepicture, are usually found in theoutput system. Cathode to heatershorts are the most common causeof "S" bends - with electrolyticsrunning a close second. A scopetest will always show either thegrid or cathode is being modulatedby the supply voltage.

ponents and is often faster thanmethodical testing. After using thistrial and error method, for a shorttime however, the time honoredsystematic approach should be used.

Some older sets biased the hori-zontal output tube with a negativevoltage from the main power sup-ply. Poor filtering in this circuitis often the cause of coke bottleor hour glass effects. Generallyspeaking, pinching from both sidesof the picture is caused by gridmodulation, while "S" type bendsare usually cathode modulationproblems.

Wiring shorts should not be over-looked either. In series s'ring sets,all f ubes and their filament cir-cuits should be thoroughly investi-gated, since a filament short inotherwise unassociated circuitrymay cause horizontal symptoms.

Wrirkles and Insufficient WidthA wrinkled raster, or one which

appears to be intensity modulated,often causes the best techniciansto scratch their heads. Basicallythe two symptoms are generated

Horizontal and HV Repairs Continuedfrom the same type of malfunction.When a wrinkle or foldover devel-ops, the beam is virtually stoppedfor some finite period or even re-versed. A bright line or bandsunerimposed on the raster indi-cates that the electron beam isslowed so the CRT phosphor isactivated for an extended period.

Both of these problems are oftenfound with insufficien' width. Wrin-kling is actually ringing which iscaused by some form of mismatchor lack of damping in the horizon-tal output yoke circuits. The damp-er tube or its associated circuitsare most often at fault, thoughfrequently a linearity, width coilor yoke matching network com-ponent is at fault.

Changing tubes in these circuitsbefore any other troubleshooting isimperative. Beyond that, substitu-tion of suspected components isworthwhile. A leaky boost capaci-tor in some circuit configurationscauses ringing or insufficient width.

One simple method to determinethe area in which the fault lies isto note which side of the screenis most affected by the defect. Ifwrinkling or foldover appears on

the left side of the screen, thedamper circuits are almost alwaysat fault. One exception is Bark-hausen oscillations. These oscilla-tions appear after the horizontaloutput tube is cut off and are evi-denced by one or more dark verti-cal lines at the left side of thescreen. Changing or selecting atube not susceptible to these oscilla-tions is the best method to deal withthem. Reducing the horizontaldrive may also eliminate them.

Insufficient width is often a cu-mulative problem; one which hasdeveloped slowly and gone unno-ticed until it finally pulled in andbecame objectionable. Since re-pairing this type of malfunction canbe costly and time consuming, itis strongly recommended that anover-riding measure be taken. Asmall capacitor across the widthcoil is very effective, or in extremecases, removal of the width coil.Similar success may be obtainedby inserting a capacitor across tapson the flyback secondary.

A high voltage capacitor acrossthe damper tube may be employedin cases other modificationsare ineffective.

Increasing the drive to the outputtube, the screen voltage or B+ arealso recommended. The technicianshould be careful, however, that theplate and screen current ratings ofthe output tube are not exceededwhen employing these methods.

Blooming and Loss of High Voltage

Blooming and low voltage prob-lems are one and the same. Low2nd anode voltage causes the CRTelectron beam to approach thescreen more slowly, thus allowingthe deflection coils to bend the beamfurther than normal.

Drawing an arc from the outputand rectifier tube caps is the oldstandby to determine the presenceof high voltage. To the experiencedtechnician, this can be a fairly ac-curate and effective method. How-ever, a great deal of experienceobserving "normal set arcs" is nec-essary. The best and most ac-curate method is to use a highvoltage probe and measure the highvoltage. This should be measuredboth with the CRT connected anddisconnected from the rectifier out-put. A gassy or shorted picturetube often gives the technician theimpression that the high voltage orhorizontal system is at fault.

Again, feeling components to de-tect abnormal operating tempera-tures and substitution are excellenttroubleshooting methods.

Since it is often impossible tostock all the necessary components,a flyback -yoke tester is a must.

A shorted boost capacitor cansometimes be easily detected withno test equipment. If no raster ispresent, pulling the damper tubewill restore the sweep to a portionof its normal width if the boostcapacitor is shorted. An ohm-meter may be used for a "cold"check to measure the resistancebetween pins three and five of thedamper tube socket. Resistancesbelow abou 50 kit should be in-vestigated. Normal resistances runas high as 250 kn.

In old RF powered high voltagesystems and some new sets, an openyoke can present a vertical line.Newer sets with this symptom us-ually operate at a greatly reducedvoltage with an open yoke wind-ing. Depending on the yoke returnused, the plugs or connecting yokewire should be checked before sub-stitution.

Triplett Model 3432-A signal gen-erator, at $119.50. -A signal gen-erator is basically a very simplepiece of equipment. At the most,it seldom has more than three tubesand more ' frequently only two.Simplicity in most equipment is adifficult -to -achieve virtue - the3432-A is simple.

spots the wiring was a little tight.When the kit was finished, no cali-bration-sliding the dial, etc.-wasnecessary. The only problem en-countered was a faulty phone jackwhich made contact intermittentlyand caused an erratic meter indica-tion. The fault was corrected, how-ever, by simply bending the jackcontacts slightly so they remainednormally closed.

A phone plug was inserted in thejack several times but no furthertrouble was noted.

All necessary coils were suppliedpre -wound in a permanent contain-er. With the eight coils supplied, theunit oscillates and detects from 400kc to 250 Mc in overlapping ranges.

A sensitivity control and the tuningadjustment are located so the unitcan be easily operated with onehand.

The unit may be operated as agrid dip meter by disabling the os-cillator with the defeat switch lo-cated on the front panel The phonejack located next to the meter dis-ables the meter circuit and allowsthe operator to obtain accurateaudio zero beats with other fre-quencies.

The unit is a good buy and cer-tainly merits consideration by bothradio and TV technicians. No otherinstrument is as versatile for power -off troubleshooting and alignmentin tuned circuits.

TEST INSTRUMENTSfor Bench and Caddy

SIGNAL GENERATOR

read circular dial. A single r -f out-put jack is conveniently located atthe center -bottom of the front paneland a modulation input is providedon the lower right corner. If exter-nal modulation is not necessary,the unit provides 400 cps internalmodulation.

The generator range extends from160 kc to 110 Mc on fundamen-tals and up to 220 Mc on har-

monics. We checked the units cali-bration after a few minutes warm-up against WWV and found itsurprisingly accurate and easy toreset to the same frequency with-out signal reference after it hadbeen shifted. Throughout its test(about 11/2 hr.) the instrument'sdrift was not detectable with normallab equipment. A cathode followeroutput provides good output sta-bility. In addi ion to the off -on, modand unmod control, a band selectora coarse and fine attenuator areprovided.

The unit is handsomely housed ina ball cornered black hammertonefinished case with a brushed alu-minum control panel. If your shop-ping for a new signal generator,this should be on your check list.It would be a welcome addition toalmost any lab or service shop.

Difficult Service Jobs Described by Readers

Hot Ground ConnectionOn a recent service on a General

Electric 'S' chassis, the picturelooked OK until the set warmed up,then the bottom slowly pulled up,anywhere from 1/2 to 2 in., for afew seconds, and then returned toa full picture. Seconds later it re-peated with varying degrees of pull-up, until it established a regular slowmoving cycle of up and down whichonly affected the bottom edge of thepicture, the top remained stable.

I noticed that once it started thiscontinuous slow moving cycle, thatwhen the bottom was on the upswing it created a squeezed portionof about a 1 -in. section across thescreen. This squeezed portionwould then slowly travel up, chang-ing the linearity as it traveled toabout two thirds of the way to thetop of the picture and disappeared.At this point, the bottom of the pic-ture, already up about 2 -in., wouldslowly return to a full picture. Thenthe cycle would repeat continuously.

After making preliminary checksin the home, I brought the set to theshop. This `S' chassis was made inearly, middle and late versions, with

various differences in the verticaloscillator and blanking circuits. Thisparticular "dog" was classified asthe early version. These chassishave the dipped soldered pin ter-minal connectors. After exhaustivechecking, the trouble turned out tobe a poor ground connection onone of those terminal sleeve con-nectors crimped to the chassis.

Although the connector was elec-trically above ground, the filamentof the 6BL7-GT which was con-nected to this terminal, was lit verybright and checked approximately6-v. But a scope check revealed abeautiful 60 -cycle sine wave on theground terminal, until I soldered thesleeve to the chassis, bringing the setback to normal operation.-Fred-erick W. Radiating Resistor

Recently, 1 was asked to remedya problem noise in a CTC-5 RCAcolor receiver. At the owner's home,I noted the fault was present onlywhen the antenna disconnected, thecracking sound was not present al-though no flashing was noticeable

on the screen in either case: It wasnoted that a small ac/dc radio wasalso affected by the noise.

While wondering what to check,I saw the brightness was no longerpresent. I removed the back of theset to find the heater of the 6AW8,(first Video amp) was not lighted.When I moved the tube the heatercame on once more. This indicateda bad tube socket or associate con-nections, so the chassis was removedfrom the cabinet to be taken to theshop. When we left the owner's res-idence, we decided the troublecould still be in the antenna systemsomewhere; the anntenna was atop75 ft of tower.

In the shop I replaced the beforementioned tube socket. While doingso, I noticed the case of a 2 w re-sistor, associated with the audiooutput stage, was cracked althoughit was not burned. I replaced thisresistor. After checking out thechassis, I returned it to the owner.

Upon completion of the hook-up,including the lead-in wires, thecracking was no longer present.

The fluctuating voltages presentin the audio circuitry evidentlycaused the cracked resistor to breakdown and radiate to other parts ofthe set and the radio.-Paul Noel,Ir., York, Pa.

How to usetemperature compensating

ceramic capacitorsWhile an oscillating circuit is warming up, its fre-quency changes. Distributed capacitance in tubes andcoil will drift in the "positive" direction-tending todecrease the resonant frequency. Unhappily, the tun-ing capacitor, if it is a conventional mica or paperunit, also drifts in this same direction . . . thereby add-ing to the downward frequency shift.

This can be a real nuisance. In the local oscillator cir-cuit of a superhet receiver, it leads to constant read-justment of tuning as the set warms up. It may alsointroduce appreciable error in a ringing oscillatortiming circuit in TV sets.

Here's where ceramic capacitors enter the scene. Un-like capacitors which have a ''natural" material asdielectric, they use a man-made, rock -like materialwhose composition can be adjusted to just about anycapacitance -temperature characteristic you want.

Some ceramic capacitors have a positive temperaturecoefficient: these are the kinds you'd use in bypass,coupling and buffer applications. Others have a zerotemperature coefficient, remaining unchanged in therange from 25° to 85° C. And you can get 'em with anegative coefficient so that the capacitance change goesopposite to that of the other circuit elements, giving aconstant LC product and substantially steady fre-quency during the warm-up period.

The usual negative temperature coefficient is 750 partsper million per degree C. But if you happen to needsome non-standard coefficient to compensate yourparticular circuit, there's a simple way to calculate theparallel combination of zero and negative coefficienttypes that will do the job. Southland Sound Corp. is the newname of the former Commercial SoundDiv., Kierulff Sound Corp. ThomasHackett and Robert Foster, new ownersof the public address, intercom andbackground music installation sales andservice distributorship, are former man-agers. Kierulff Sound Corp. continues tooperate as a Hi-Fi Component sales andservice outlet.

Radio Corp. of America set all-timesales and earnings records for the firstnine months of 1962, according to chair-man David Sarnoff and president ElmerW. Engstrom. After tax earnings in thethird-quarter increased 66 percent overthe same quarter in 1961. Profits aftertaxes for the first nine months rose 44percent to $34,300,000 from $23,800,000in the first three quarters of 1961. Thiswas achieved on record sales of $1,-265,500,000, up 16 percent from the$1,090,100,000 in the comparable perioda year ago.

Hi -Lo Mfg. Co., Chicago, purchasedthe TV antenna and accessories businessof Amphenol-Borg Electronics Corp. Thesale includes patents and all machineryand equipment for manufacturing theantennas and accessories. In marketingthese products Hi -Lo will be free to usethe name "Inline" formerly used byAmphenol-Borg. Identification with thename Amphenol will be dropped, how-ever.

Olson Electronics opens a store inSouth Hills, Pittsburgh. This is the sec-ond Olson Store in the Pittsburgh areaand bringing the total of stores open to13. This is easily accomplishedby connecting a coaxial relay to thetransmitter function switch. In thismanner the transmitting antenna willbe connected to the unit while inthe transmit mode to the receivingantenna when listening.

Base stations also have the ad-vantage of being grounded. It is notonly a good safe practice but inmany cases will improve communi-cations if the transmitter and re-ceiver are connected to a goodearth ground.

A final word of warning: Re-member, you're not working with60 cycle house current. Haywiresetups, poor connections, and im-proper impedance matching canmean the difference between barelyusable communications and a topnotch system which fully satisfiesyour customer.

Vertical and Horizontal sync loss-If both vertical and horizontalsections are affected, the fault prob-ably lies in the sync section. In mostcases manipulation of the hold con-trol should sync the picture mo-mentarily. If rotation of the holdcontrols will not allow the pictureto roll up and down, or in horizon-tal problems cause blanking barsto slant to the left and right, theoscillator is probably at fault.

Complete loss of sync in eitheror both sweep section can be tracedto almost any point in the syncpath. In most cases, however, ifonly one oscillator is out of sync thetechnician should concentrate onthe input circuits of the associatedoscillator.

Vertical jitter-This is usually aproblem encountered in the verticaloutput circuit. If the output circuithas been relieved of suspicion, how-ever, light capacitor leakage and theintegrator circuit should be suspec-ted.

Horizontal jitter-Horizontal jit-ter can usually be corrected by care-ful adjustment of the ringing coil.Component values which have

changed slightly should also be sus-pected. If all efforts fail, increasethe value of the resistor in serieswith the ringing coil about 50 per-cent. On synchroguide systems, thecircuit Q may be reduced by shunt-ing a 27 K to 47 K resistor acrossthe phase coil. (See Fig. 3.)

Critical horizontal sync-Almostany component in the horizontalsync or AFC section can cause criti-cal sync. A careful componentcheck is the easiest way out. Don'tleave the phase detector diode forlast-they are frequently at fault.If you have replaced these diodes,or suspect tampering, make surethey are not installed backwards.Often a set will sync in but onlylightly when these diodes are re-versed.

Critical vertical sync-Again,shift in the value of components inthe vertical oscillator input circuitryor slight capacitor leakage is atfault. Sometimes the best methodto locate these faults is to changethe suspected components.

Christmas tree effect-S o m etimes called optical effect, is theresult of the horizontal oscillatoroperating far from its normal fre-quency. The AFC circuitry is aprime suspect in this type of mal-function. In some cases, however,loss of sync combined with improp-er adjustments will cause the christ-mas tree effect.

In any case careful, painstakingtroubleshooting will lead you to theproblem.

CRYSTAL CALIBRATORE. F. Johnson Crystal Calibrator,Model 250-38 at $18.95- Here'san instrument that is very familiar

to amateur radio operators, butsomehow hasn't gained much popu-larity with regular technicians. Ev-

ery shop, especially those engagedin two-way radio service needs anaccurate frequency standard.

Amateurs use, in most cases, a100 kc crystal oscillator rich in har-monics in conjunction with their re-ceiver. The signals can then beheard every 100 kc as the dial isturned.

Technicians can use the crystalcalibrator in a similar manner. Rea-sonably accurate test equipment -transmitters and receivers can bechecked and calibrated with the aidof a beat frequency listening device-such as a grid dip meter, the re-

ceiver under test or an auxiliary re-ceiver.

The unit comes completelyequipped with a 100 kc crystal anda 6BH6 tube. If the unit is mountedin a receiver or existing test equip-ment, power is drawn from the exist-ing equipment. Only 2 ma between150 v and 300 v is needed for B+and 6 v for filament power.

Special quick connectors are sup-plied with the unit to make the in-stallation easier. The unit is verycompact so its installation is simpli-fied. It measures only 3443 x 21/2 x1' in.
