• DB , Unit 5 (Aug 26-Sept. 1):

• Teaching differs from other professions in that you take responsibility for the safety and well-being of many parents' children each school day. Individual states have laws regarding school safety and child abuse of which you need to be aware. What are your main concerns about this responsibility?

This week- Seminar- National School Safety Center

Come to the Seminar prepared to discuss the following questions:

•  The National School Safety Center serves as a useful clearinghouse for vital information that you need as a teacher. At this week’s seminar, we will refer to some of the resources available at http://www.nssc1.org/.

• Do you know the signs of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse? Do you know how to identify possible substance abuse in young people?

• Student violence against other students and against teachers in secondary schools is a growing national concern. Related to this concern is the increase of organized gang activity in many schools. Can you identify the characteristics of potentially violent youth or of gang-related activity?
