Purpose: The Newcomers/Alumni Bicycling Group is for those individuals who like to get exercise while enjoying the scenery around New Bern. We feature 'no drop' rides--

which means we don't leave anyone behind! We have been working to design options that allow more serious bikers to enjoy a longer distance at a faster pace, but also provide a choice for more leisurely riders to go at a more comfortable pace. We take breaks as needed. Routes will vary, allowing participants the chance to see different neighborhoods and the surrounding countryside

Requested Gear:

1. A working bicycle (brakes, gears) with adequate safety items - lights, reflectors

2. A Helmet is mandatory.

3. Carry adequate water (minimum – 1 pt. / 500 ml).

4. Casual clothing (shorts) and top with bright colors.

Air pumps and/or lights are an option.

Meeting Place:

A group email, including directions to a starting point, is sent out for weekend rides.

Past Boater Group Events

April 4th , 2015 The Boaters Group recently sponsored the US Coast Guards Auxiliary Course, Suddenly In Command Course at the New Bern Yacht Club on April 4th. The class was an overwhelming success with over 45 people in attendance. Bill Neilson of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary was the instructor and did an excellent job holding everyone’s attention for the four hour class. Plenty of questions and entertaining discussions followed the presentation.

The course was boating safety primer which was geared toward spouses and others with little or no experience on what to do in the event of an emergency, where someone suddenly finds themselves in a situation of having to operate a boat. It also covered some local waters boating knowledge. The Boaters Group hopes to conduct similar classes in the future.

Following the class we had a Pot Luck Dinner, and in keeping with tradition it was truly a gourmet delight. Nobody went home hungry!

March, 2015 The Boaters Group took a tour of Moores Marine Yacht Center in Jarret Bay which specializes in the restoration of older classic Wooden Yachts, like the Trumpy. Trumpy’s are probably the best known of the old wooden classics. Many people have not heard of a Trumpy, but if you’ re familiar with the Presidential Yacht USS Sequoia or the Honey Fitz owned by the late John F Kennedy, you know what a Trumpy is all about.

Following our tour of Moores, the group enjoyed a great lunch at the Tight Lines Pub & Brewery in Moorehead City. Click on TOUR to view the trip report and pictures.

February, 2015 Fountain Boats Tour in Washington, NC. Click on TOUR to view the trip report and pictures.

If you're new to the area or not yet a member of the Newcomers/AGN Boating Group and would be interested in joining, please contact:

The Book Club meets monthly at a member's home for conversation about a book, usually fiction, selected by member suggestions. The group leaders spark discussion with a few comments and questions and the host provides light refreshments.

We are a group of avid readers who meet most often on the fourth Thursday of the month from 1-3pm in different member’s houses to discuss a wide genre of books. The book list is compiled every six months from suggestions taken from and voted on by the members of the club. The books range from mysteries, to beach reads to classics and more. We are a group of very diverse people bringing to the table different morals, values, backgrounds, thus making for a truly lively discussion. Over light snacks, we learn about the authors and yes, discuss the books for 1 1/2 hours approximately.

Driving directions are emailed to all book club members.

If you are interested in joining, or have any questions, contact the activity leader(s).

The goal is to have fun and meet new people. Bunco is a simple, no skill, dice game. You sit at a table of four with a partner across from you; then the partners rotate as the game continues. So this game is a great way to meet people in a small group. If you can toss three dice and recognize the numbers on the dice, then you can play this game! Each month we have 12 or 16 participants. Each time you participate, the cost is $5.00 per person with all money paid out as prizes at the end of that evening (please bring cor-rect change). Host will provide dessert. Other participants please bring an appetizer for approx 8-10 people to be shared PLUS beverage of your choice that you would like to personally drink that evening. Participants will be notified by e-mail of the location prior to the event. Activity is held the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Advance sign-up is re-quired and is offered at the monthly New Bern Newcomer meeting. If space is still avail-able after the meeting sign-up, then an email is sent to members who have expressed interest in Bunco.

Day Trips Gone By

Touring the Swansboro waterfront on the Lady Swan tour boat., May 21st 2014.

We had a great tour of Historic Swansboro by our very informative crew -- Tim and Jake. A good time was had by all!!!!!

Because of a mix-up with the scheduling, we were graciously given a free lunch at the Ice House Restaurant by the Lady Swan Crew. The weather was beautiful, the tour was outstanding, and the lunch was yummy.

The entire set of pictures can be viewed by clicking on album

Dining-In is scheduled from January - April each year. Dining-In dinners are limited to 4 couples or 8 participants who meet in the hosting participant's home. Everyone shares in the preparation by providing a designation course for the dinner. It is a great way to meet other Newcomers and enjoy a delicious meal.

There are several sets of 4 couples in the Dining-In activity. Each Dining-In session mixes which 4 couples are gathering at the host's house. Each month you are sitting down at the table with a different group of couples in the activity. Each couple gets the opportunity to host one dinner. Once again, hosting is spread evenly over the participants. This way you get to meet several Newcomers over the Dining-In season. It is a lot of fun and you should give it a try.

If you have not participated in Dining-In previously, I urge you to give it a try. It is a great way to meet people in a smaller setting, make lasting friendships, and have a lot of fun. This year we had 48 participants and 12 alternates that helped make this a “favorite” activity of the Newcomers..

We have heard many terrific stories from this year's participants and are looking forward to the next dinner!! If you are interested in learning more about the group, please contact the activity leader for more information or inquire at the monthly meeting.

Dining Out Reviews:

On Thursday, April 23rd, 2015 we went to the Spouter Inn. This restaurant offers a

fabulous meal in a charming relaxed waterfront setting. Panoramic views of Taylor's

Creek, island horses, porpoise and sunsets compliment your dining experience. They

also have a bakery located within offering many delicious treats.

On Monday, March 23rd 2015 went to the Bay Leaf restaurant here in New Bern for

dinner at 5:00 pm. This restaurant offers authentic Indian cuisine with friendly wait staff.

Chef Raman participated in Taste of Carolina 2014 competing against 31 different

restaurants. He won first place on Entrée and second place over all. Prior to dining

there, several had expressed their hesitancy about eating Indian cuisine, however they

were pleasantly surprised by their very tasty meals.

On Friday, February 13th 2015 we went to the Sound Side Steak & Seafood

Restaurant in Morehead City for lunch. This restaurant offers a selection of Certified

Angus Beef steaks, local seafood, local produce, and free range chicken. They were kind

enough to dedicate the restaurant to the Newcomers Club which provided us with

special attention to service. We were a very large crowd, 43 attending.

As evidenced by our attire, it was a cold wintry day and although this facility was experiencing problems with their heating, we gathered there enjoying fellowship & sharing stories while "breaking bread together". This group activity offers us all the opportunity to really get to sit & visit with one another whether we come as singles or couples. As newcomers, many of us share similar experiences along the way and these opportunities have led to bonding & new friendships.

Newcomers / Alumni Golf is based on the premise that the game should be fun.

Making friends is paramount; proficiency is immaterial. We welcome all skill levels.

Rules are what each player wants them to be. Some players adhere to the stricter rules

of the USGA, while others follow the lax GW rules -- count every stroke that you like. If

you don’t like it, don’t count it; or finally, don’t count anything and pick up your ball any

time you wish!

We schedule a golf outing once a month, normally on a Wednesday or Thursday, and

play 12 months of the year. We travel to courses in the New Bern area and try to keep

within a one-hour drive. We also arrange carpooling for the out-of-New Bern trips. If this

sounds like something you would enjoy, come join us. You will have a good time! For

additional information or reservations, contact:

Throughout the September – May season, we try to choose outdoor activities that are appealing to everyone. The adventures are not competitive in nature. The adventures have included: kayaking/ canoeing, hiking, kite flying, bicycle riding, and boat rides. We either bring our lunch or stop by a nearby restaurant.

We don’t have participants sign up unless it is an activity that must be more stringent in head count. Our slogan is “No sign-up, just show up at the event,” and rain-out is constituted by already raining or bad outlook during the time of the adventure.

Outdoor Adventures Reviews

Duke University Marine Lab Tour

On August 1st 2015, June Dowd took the Newcomers on their Outdoor Adventure at Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beau-fort, NC. The Natural History Resource Center (NHRC) preserves and dissemi-nates knowledge concerning ecological systems and the distribution and abun-dance of marine plants and animals. The center consists of an extensive reference collection of marine organisms (the museum), a library of taxonomic references and ecological publications, a large outdoor seawater facility, and a research la-boratory designed to facilitate the collection, preservation and identification of marine organisms...

Afterwards we stopped at Sammy's Seafood house and Oyster Bar for lunch.

Coast Guard Station at Fort Macon

On March 21st 2015, Steve Spaziante and June Dowd took the Newcomers on their Outdoor Adventure at the Coast Guard Station at Fort Macon. There were 20 members of both AGN and Newcomers attending. Our guide was excellent, and we had a beautiful spring day for the tour with lunch afterward at Clawson's in Beaufort.

You can view all the pictures taken at this event by clicking on album

On January 24th 2015, Steve Spaziante and June Dowd took the Outdoor Adventure to Kinston. The first stop was the CSS Neuse Museum where the group took a guided tour by Holly Brown of the Ironclad ship built during the Civil War. The ship eventually went aground and remained in its place until 1956. Since then Kinston groups have repaired and eventually moved her to an indoor facility.

After the CSS Neuse tour, the group visited the Caswell No. 1 Fire Station Museum where the proprietor, Guy Basden, told stories of the the devastating fire of 1895, as well as pointing out equipment from the early days of firefighting.

Lunch was provided by Queen Street Deli. Manager Adam Atkinson provided a selection of sandwiches and side dishes. Adam agreed to operate the deli on a Saturday which is usually not open on a weekend.

Outdoor Adventure group went to Mother Earth Brewery for another guided tour of the day. Not only did everyone see the brewery operation, but also some tasted the beers offered in the tasting room.

The last stop was the Kinston Visitor Center where the group got to see many relics of the area, mostly Civil War, and view a movie of the battle of Kinston and an overall view of Kinston's growth in recent years.

Wine Socials in the past:

The February, 2015 wine social was held at Donnei and Ron Cousino's house, Two fireplaces, two tables full of food and more that a sample of wine and other beverages made for a wonderful evening of good conversation and good cheer. Thank you Ron and Connie for being such gracious hosts.

The following are a few pictures taken by DuWayne Campeau..

The January, 2015 festivities was hosted at Tony and Nancy Guadagnino's house in Fairfield Harbor. Because it is January, it was dark when most of us arrived. The weather was a little wet but not raining when the party started. Inside it was warm and friendly and the Guadagnino's house easily accommodated all of us. There was a significant crowd. The dining table was abundantly supplied with all kinds of holiday

goodies, and you couldn't ask for a better crowd to spend the beginning of the year with.
