A Coincidence of Dates and Days

You have to appreciate the irony in the possibility that spring flood could takeplace on Earth Day, Friday April 22nd. Of course, thats also Good Friday. EvenEaster Sunday is close enough to suspect theres some hidden joke on us. In Me-dieval history, early spring was often a time of famine, illness and death. The ideaof happy bunnies and chocolate eggs came a lot later. It feels like the Earth is outto get us.

Modern sources of information have helped to keep us on a better tack in life. Sta-

tistical history, snow pack monitoring, and scientific evidence contribute to a con-stant revaluation of natural circumstances. However, flood control and predictiondo come down to something of an art form. The greatest concern is that the publicshould remain calm and act in an orderly fashion. Needless distress and injury willbe avoided. The primary issue is safety.

The best way to do this is to provide timely, continuous information to everyone.Without this scrappy gossip circulates that is often not accurate but causes anxietyand over re-action. Residents deserve forewarning just as early and completely asdo business owners. Theres plenty of experience among people from the 1996flood that can be useful to everyone and used as guidelines for people now. Withmore open information neighbours can organize themselves and help those whocant easily do for themselves. This is when the community must call on itself; not

just in rescue efforts but in preparation techniques. Open information from govern-ment sources would help a lot. Give us the straight info and well know what to dowith it. Were capable people.

So Earth Day and Easter and the spring flood are all coming at about the sametime this year. Strangely enough, you cant define the complexity of any of themwith exactitude. With each one you just have to prepare ahead as best you can andput your faith in Hope. And, Passover may be the best hope of all, in more waysthan one. JK
