NEW HAVEN -- Skateboard ramps notwithstanding, Edgewood Park is still the same urban oasis that

Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. mapped out in 1910.

Like its cosmopolitan cousin, New York City's Central Park, Edgewood Park stands as a leafy monument to

intentional serenity. There's nothing haphazard or accidental about it -- from the placement of its paths to the

contours of its gentle hills.

Other New Haven parks offer views; Edgewood offers escape.

"It's a peaceful place in a city of chaos," says 28-year-old Wathia Kelly of Hamden, a regular visitor to the park

since she was 5.

Edgewood Park is home to an assortment of admirers: dog walkers, joggers, artists, paddlers, playground

parents, picnic people, tennis players, thespians, hoopsters, skateboarders, overheated kids, morning walkers

and duck lovers.

It has footbridges. It has nature trails. It has an enormous sundial, a water play area and a Holocaust memorial.

"It's a sunken world unto itself," says former New Haven resident Colin Caplan, author of "Westville: Tales from

a Connecticut Hamlet."

"You almost lose your bearings in the park, because it pulls you in," Caplan says during a recent visit home. "You

don't see the city anymore. You could be in southern Mississippi all of a sudden. I've definitely come here on

stressful days, to take it all away."

New Havener Rachel Shapiro Alderman is another fan. She's acted in three plays in the park, as a member of ABroken Umbrella Theatre.

"You could never memorize the whole park," she says. "It changes with the seasons, and I love how, as you go

through the (Edgewood Avenue) tunnel and approach the duck pond, the lighting is just incredible."

New Haven Alderman Greg Dildine, D-25, says a person can visit Edgewood Park every day of the week and

do a different activity each day. "The variety of it is what's so exciting," he explains. "People use the whole length

of it."

Dildine, who also is interim president of the civic group Friends of Edgewood Park, says the entire period from1909 through 1911 was crucial to the park's design. Friends of Edgewood Park is planning a year-long

celebration of the park starting in the fall.

Not bad, after a century of seasons.

MEET MR. MITCHELL

It didn't start out as a park, of course.

As Caplan notes, the area along West Rock Avenue, near Whalley Avenue, was a war zone at one time. Local

patriots skirmished with British troops there in the summer of 1779.

"People were hiding in the bushes all around here, waiting for the British to come past," Caplan says.

Years later, the area was home to a bolt factory -- powered by the local waterway.

"What a lot of people don't know is that the (West) River used to meander," Caplan says. "They straightened the

river, because they wanted to open up more land for farming and mosquito control."

Much of the land was owned in the 1800s by Donald Mitchell, a civic-minded man who had a 360-acre farm in

New Haven near Forest Road. In 1889, he donated 60 acres to the city for a park. He also persuaded other

nearby landowners to give adjacent parcels.

The result was Edgewood Park, named after Mitchell's farm, Edgewood.

The celebrated Olmsted landscape design firm was brought in to turn the park into something special. The

subsequent new design included an archery field, a rose garden, a lily pond and miles of carriage and horse

paths.

"The Olmsteds liked an organic, natural flow of things," Caplan explains. "Pathways going along waterways and

hillsides were important to them. They would plant oaks, rhododendrons. Other parks were just big, open

spaces, but they created, within the park, spaces of congregation, spaces of procession and spaces of

tranquility."

TOP TO BOTTOM

The narrow, northern tier of the park is perhaps its busiest area.

There are tennis courts here, as well as a basketball court, handball court, a fitness area and a gazebo that's seenbetter days.

"It's the melting pot, and I'm here every day," says Daryle Breland, 51, of New Haven.

Breland and a group of men sit on benches and folding chairs near the tennis courts, chewing the fat and

watching the games people play.

"You see all ethnic groups. All kinds of people," Breland says. "And it's safe. And the scenery is good."

Even on a weekday afternoon, people are out walking, sunning themselves and talking animatedly. Beyond thecourts, a footbridge leads past Coogan Pavilion, a skate park and an enclosed dog run.

"I like to walk or roller skate here, because there's a lot of room to do it," says Ariel Keith, 27, of New Haven.

"I come out here every day of the week, at some point during the day."

Out past the dog run, Stephanie Cseh, 33, of New Haven traverses a long meadow with her Chihuahua, Chico.

"It has its own little areas to be away from people," Cseh says of the park. "Even when I was much younger, my

grandmother would bring me here."

Farther south, Edgewood Park melts into a marshy wonderland. Trails on either side of the river take visitors

through a tangle of trees and bushes. A wetlands viewing platform stands near the white trail.

"I'm here so often, that to me it's my backyard," says Stephen Harris, 52, of New Haven. "It's pretty, and the

buttercups are up now. In fall, it explodes with color. In winter, it's icy and serene."

THE EDGEWOOD EDGE

The bridge that carries Edgewood Avenue over the park offers yet another vibe. It creates a dark, cool tunnel,

with the sound of running water echoing off the stonework.

The park widens dramatically from here. It stretches from soccer and softball fields to the west, and playgrounds

and a duck pond to the east.

"I remember coming out here, wow, 26 years ago, when I was little," says Jaysin Jones, 31, of New Haven as he

walks with Wathia Kelly and their 4-year-old daughter, Ja-Niya Jones.

"We used to have family cookouts here, and football games," Jones recalls, strolling near the duck pond. "And

that sundial back there? I didn't realize it was a sundial until I got older."

Edgewood has its most public face as it returns to street level, near Edgewood Avenue and Ella T. Grasso

Boulevard.

This spot has more benches, a bocce court, the park ranger station, a large playground and the Spanish-

American War Veterans Memorial. The Sundial Splash Pad is here, too, near the intersection of the Boulevard

and Stanley Street.

After that, it's back to reality.

"Going from one part of the park to another, you're almost on a trek," Caplan says. "I think it's way undervalued.Not enough people are out here."
