As women and children settle in for breakfast at the Rochester Women’s Shelter, their outlook will now be a little less dreary. A team of Girl Scouts recently set out on completing their Sil-ver Award project, and chose to bring cheer to the shelter’s visitors through creation of a mural.

Bella Schlotthauer, one of the trio of scouts completing the project said the project was a natural fit for the group. “We’re all pretty artistic,” she said. “It kind of evolved from just throwing paint at kids and telling them to be creative and do something to help our com-munity.” Schlotthauer, along with fel-low scouts Lauren Carlson and Kari Schrandt painted a garden

By Rachel Hammer I know a bank where the wild thyme blows in these sweltering Midwestern midsummer days—along the Minnesota River, in the Louisville Township of Shako-pee, the Renaissance Festival has once again bloomed into festivity for the 42nd year. Through the end of September, the olde vil-lagery will open the castle gates for weekend revelry. The lords and ladies of this year’s RenFest are a jovial lilt-ing menagerie to behold. Cos-tumed in assertive codpieces,

hammer pants tucked into knee-high laced boots, puffed sleeves, plumed tricorns and drooping muffin hats were the merry men. The ladies ranged from maidens with bronzed bosoms billow-ing beyond billowing blouses to puckered matrons with wagging dewlaps dipping down into the crevices of their hoisted chests. Netherworld nymphs frolicked with flutes; masterful minstrels managed their music; vagabonds and fairies fluttered in getups all glitz with no glamour. Earthy, is what I would call the festival vibe.

Hit the Minnesota Renaissance Festival for a wild thymeUnder the bowers of woodbine and willow, hearty, ruddy-faced, sweat-soaked folks guzzled turkey legs and tankards of mead. The bard, methinks, would approve. I had never before rid-den an elephant. His name was Chris, and he was quite non-chalant in his loop around the arena. There were camels, also, that could be ridden, but few festival-goers seemed eager for the humped option. Jousting is thrilling to behold, though I’m not sure why any-one agrees to participate (I also have this question for football). War horses, they call them, are armored and laced with ornate caparisons. The jousters aim their lances at one another, or at apples, and ride at top horse speed in chivalric revival. There were sev-eral rather Fabio-esque jousters with long blonde hair and strong chins astride the horses wearing strapping doublets and blowing their wassails. The prettier ones seemed to miss their targets more often. Endless entertainment has been tucked into each alley of the fairgrounds. There are ball spin-ners, tight rope walkers, human benches, tawny wenches peeping under kilts, truculent glassblow-ers, jolly blacksmiths pounding

small swords for children, come-dians Puke and Snot, The Dan-ger Committee throwing knives, face painters, body painters, hair braiders tendrilling headpiec-

es and garlands, belly dancers, young whelps selling pickles with lewd repartee, town criers, bar-bers, fairy-collared dachshunds, jestered poodles, and keg-yoked, kilted turtles (pictured). A wild anachronistic time not to be missed.

A turtle joins the festivities at the Renaissance Festival held every fall in Shakopee, MN. Photo by Rachel Hammer

By Yvonne Nyenhuis I don’t know how the can-didates feel, but “The Road to the White House” has been a long and painful experience to any Americans who are pay-ing attention. The political machine is chewing us up, and on November 6, will spit us out.

Once we cast our vote we will no longer be relevant and politi-cians will go back to ignoring us. The Republican convention was not about loving Mitt Rom-ney, it was about hating Presi-dent Obama. The Democratic convention was about loving President Obama. The coming election will establish which is stronger “hate” or “love”? Rom-ney doesn’t appear to be “for” anything. He defined his cam-paign as “being against anything Obama is for!”

The Road to the White House

Yvonne Nyenhuis

Obama is for creating jobs, affordable Healthcare for all Americans, improving education, investing in research, protecting the environment, and women’s rights including equal pay with men in the workplace. He sup-ports gay rights, respects science, and understands that our shrink-ing glaciers and climate change is a cause for concern. He will fund FEMA and maintain an agency that is ready to respond to floods, fires, earthquakes, and other disasters. He seeks to reduce our involve-ment in war, bring home our troops, see that our military have the resources they need when

they are fighting and healthcare and jobs when they return to civilian life. He believes we can ban assault weapons without infringing on Second Amend-ment rights. He has struggled with the problem of illegal immi-gration. While he has deported more aliens he has shown com-passion to young people who grew up in this country and are here through no fault of their own. He has stepped up protection of our borders and increased drill-ing for oil. He stood up for work-ers bargaining rights and saved the auto industry. He supports developing alternative energy

To the Editor, I wish to make a correc-tion in your coverage of the frac sand study group. When I spoke about the positive eco-nomic impacts of scenic high-way designation I was not talk-ing about our Scenic Highway #16. I was referring to a study

by the University of Minne-sota on the Detroit Lakes Area scenic highway. The beauty of the Lake District brings in $38 million annually, includ-ing 635 jobs and $12.6 million in labor income. Our scenic treasure in South-east Minnesota is even more spectacular than the Lake Dis-trict. I suspect, therefore, that

the revenues and jobs gener-ated by scenic highway #16 would be much greater. And these revenues and jobs are sustainable, but only as long as our Bluff Country stays beau-tiful.

Letter about frac sandTo the Editor, I am concerned this frac sand business is capable of get-ting so big so fast, that many people beyond the land owner and few workers will be greatly affected. That is why we need good solid information for the townships, counties, and states to decide what each commu-nity is willing or not willing to

live with in their neighborhood. I want the infrastructure, envi-ronment, scenery, water, air, noise, property values to not be irreversibly damaged. I want our citizens to keep con-trol, and not allow a business to rape oodles of acres in our area. For example, if we decide to allow this business, then lets limit the size and density of frac sand pits.

A positive viewpoint is important on this frac sand mining issue. I suggest this viewpoint includes good stud-ies of the entire issue. This business would bring economic increases for some land owners, and decreases for neighboring owners. Some jobs may be cre-ated, and others may be lost if we lose people not wanting to visit, retire, or live here because

of scenery, traffic, noise, water, or air issues. Trading asset val-ues is an important balance. I am a dairy farmer from Canton, and a long time mem-ber of Land Stewardship Proj-ect (LSP). LSP is conser-vation-minded farmers, rural citizens and urban support-ers that value and work for healthy soils, clean water and air, opportunities for young

farmers to get started, revitaliz-ing rural economies, affordable health care for all, township rights, and the preservation of our beautiful landscapes.

Respectfully, Bonnie Haugen

and energy conservation. He is for improving transportation and developing high speed rail. He is thoughtful and makes decisions based on facts instead of wishful thinking. He has the courage to make difficult choices where our national security is involved. I guess if Mitt Romney is “against everything that President Obama is for,” that he’s against all these things. So far I haven’t seen him take a stand on any moral issue and he changes his mind more often than he changes his socks!

By David Hansen Near as I can tell, that’s the campaign theme of the Republican effort this year. It seems a bit weak when compared to classics from the past, like “It’s Morning in Ameri-ca,” “Yes We Can” and “Hope and Change.” This is a group that has publicly avowed that they will not “be dictated by fact-checkers.” I give them points for hon-esty, I’m just not comfort-able with that as a leadership policy. Here are but a few examples: Economics: Supply-side eco-nomics is a valid piece of the whole field, but the idea that reducing marginal tax rates automatically increases tax revenues is faulty. There is a point in the tax rate at which that is true; the first year of the Reagan-era tax cuts on personal income seemed to have increased tax receipts. It’s believed that was

not the case with the correspond-ing reduction in corporate taxes. But the Bush-era tax cuts were clearly disasterous to revenues. We are well below the marginal rate at which we could cut taxes and grow our way out of the deficit. But the Republicans continue to insist to the contrary. Here’s an idea! Let’s reduce the tax rate to zero! Medicine. Consider the com-ments of Todd Akin, Missouri Senate hopeful, about “legitimate rape.” He still meant “forcible rape,” which incomprehensibly assumes not all rape is actual rape and insultingly imagines that women might claim “rape” to jus-tify sexual relations. It’s in the Republican Platform! It’s the other part of Akin’s com-ments that illustrate the point: his claim that a woman’s body shuts down to prevent pregnancy in a rape. This is medically untrue. But this belief persists, because they want to believe it. They have to believe it, or the Republican Plat-form that dictates what a woman can do with her own body, even

Unencumbered by the Facts in a rape situation, would seem extraordinarily cruel. Science. Forget it (as many Republicans have). I can’t even begin; the Olmsted County Journal has a limited budget for newsprint. So let’s look at the latest Repub-lican claims; see if you can spot the “irregularities.” It’s easier than, say, running a marathon in under three hours. Mitt Romney is say-ing “Obama quietly ended work requirements for welfare.” In fact, he strengthened them in a time when jobs are hard to come by. He approved waivers for five states that redirected the efforts to job-build-ing programs, keeping the wel-fare-to-work program alive. Mitt Romney supported this as well just months ago, though finding that Romney disagrees with Romney is not news. They mourn the lowering of the nation’s credit rating, never mentioning that rating was lowered because the House Republicans signaled that the country might not pay its debt during the debt-ceiling debacle. They fault Obama for not adopt-ing the Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction plan, even though it was killed by a group of Republicans - led by Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan. They say the economic stimulus plan was ineffective after working diligently to reduce its impact. It is important to remember this: in budget negotiations last year, the proposals offered by President Obama would reduce the deficit twice as fast as the Republican/Ryan plan would have. The Demo-crats are the party of fiscal respon-sibility. Republicans will offer no spe-cifics as to how they will achieve increase defense spending, pres-ervation of Social Security while again cutting taxes/reducing tax

David Hansen

receipts. None. There again, no facts. The most effective speech of the Republican Convention, accord-ing to one poll, was that of Clint Eastwood speaking to a chair. But the best summation of the 2012 Republican effort was the speech of Paul Ryan, a speech labeled as holding the “world record for the greatest number of blatant lies.” But that’s just the “liberal media,” and we all know that...no, wait. That was the assessment of Fox

News. I know that both parties “stretch” the truth. But one party is making it a matter of policy, the “platform” on which the campaign is based, and one is appealing to reason. Voltaire will be voting Democrat. We have a clear choice in the upcoming election We can either pick up our torches and pitchforks and attack those ever-bothersome “facts,” or we can grab our think-ing caps. I’m size 7 and 5/8.

By Rachel Hammer Let the Great World Spin

While We Remember Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin is a magnetic resonance image of New York City. Lit in loops of neon, amid a shuff ling cycle of people, ideas, and money, the sleepless, elec-tric multi-culture of NYC draws a current of inter-national atten-tion as the world’s babbling tower of commerce, art, and literature. In September 2001, many stopped blindly spinning for a moment,

and looked. McCann describes this same call to attention in the shadow of 9/11, and generously tells the stories of strangers interconnected by their bear-

ing witness to the man, a king really, funambulist and madman Phillippe Petit, who danced and spun upon a wire between the towers in August 1974. McCann’s novel suggests there is power, even duty, when humans collect to bear witness. Several sum-

mers ago, I sat transfixed among twenty others listening

to the opening pages of Let the Great World Spin read aloud. Most of us at the table had only ever visited New York City. We were outsiders to that world, but regardless, I was entranced by McCann’s litany of images. I felt like a silly spinning proton stopped, polarized at attention, allured by a force greater than the sum of mine alone. Closely reading, attention aligned, the members of our group experi-enced the temporary abandon-ment of our individual selves in exchange for the intersubjective witness that McCann’s char-acters also experience in the novel as they stand in awe of the man on wire. Together, at once, all watch the scene from a myriad separate vantage points, and the experience alters their lives and speeds their collisions with one another. In this way, Let the Great World Spin is like the 2004 film Crash. And both works seem to precedent the motif-mosaic style used by Jon-athan Saffran Foer in his work Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close to directly broach the sub-

ject of our greatest national tragedy. At the reading years ago, we were prompted to write a rep-resentation of ourselves in that scene. One participant tearfully described himself oblivious to the man above on the wire. He told of his loneliness and of the companionship he found in words and books. Another wrote that he stood in the crowd and looked into the sun, letting his eyes burn until blind, so as not to see another fall. I wrote

of myself as a young woman in a moment of found faith, step-ping in among the watchers, the readers, the united, as though into a pew. I continued to feel this way throughout every page of the book—McCann has dis-covered how to image some-thing like a collective soul. As we remember 9/11 on its anniversary, this book is a worthy tribute, a love letter of sorts, to another time in New York City history when people turned to look up together.

ates. Last year, Rochester Pub-lic Schools lost 200 high school students. Though enrollment for the district is up this year, with 815 new students, the magnitude of students lost to drop out is unacceptable. To address this problem, RPS and UW will send trained com-munity members across the city on Saturday October 6 to the homes of high school students who have not yet returned to school for the new school year. Interested students will be trans-ported to a kick-off communi-ty breakfast welcome program where they can sit down with academic counselors and staff to get re-enrolled and oriented. Once students re-enter through this program, they will be closely followed by volunteers who hope to engage the family in sustain-ing the student’s commitment to high school graduation. Muñoz had two messages he hoped this effort would send to students: “You are important to us, and your education is impor-tant to us. Not only to the dis-trict, but to the community,” and

ROCHESTER SBContinued from Page 1

“You do matter, we all want you to be successful.” “Student success really is com-munity success. Our mission is to connect people and resources to improve lives,” said Karen Mathison. “This touches the workforce 20/20 goals we have as a community. We’ll have jobs, and we need people to fill those jobs. This is an issue that affects all of us.” 120 community volunteers are needed to join 50 school district staff to reach out on October 6 from 9am-12p. Volunteers will also need to attend a one-hour training in the week prior to the event. Volunteers capable in a variety of capacities are needed 1) to call students the week prior to let them know that volunteers will be making home visits, 2) to set up the welcome breakfast at the Edison building, and 3) to drive to student homes and convey a sincere message on behalf of the community that they are wel-come and wanted back in school. Volunteers with second language skills are especially needed. Sign up to help and join the workforce of volunteers at: http://www.uwolmsted.org/comeback

By Nate Langworthy For many people, our four-legged companions are best friends and a beloved part of the family. It’s an unfortunate reality that our lifespan does not coin-cide evenly, and while grieving their loss, many pet owners face the concurrent problem of how to give their loved ones a proper and dignified resting place. When the ground thaws this coming spring, Oakwood Cem-

etery will offer memorial space for our furry friends at the Oakwood Memorial Pet Gar-den, located on an acre at the northern edge of their Oak-wood East memorial space off of Viola Road and 36th Avenue in northeastern Rochester. The decision to go ahead with the project was guided by the demand demonstrated for the services of Cherished Pet Cremation of Hayfield. There is no designated pet burial

Oakwood to offer memorial service for pets ground closer than LaCrosse, WI. In addition to the plot, pet owners have the option of using cremation services as well as a getting a flat or upright headstone monument for your pet. “It’s a terrible loss, almost like a family member,” said Charles Graham, Oakwood Cemetery board member. “You hate to put the dog in the backyard and then move away. This is a very efficient and caring way to take care of an animal. It’s really shaping up to be a beautiful cemetery out there.” Pets will be buried in small caskets, which serve as both a comforting vessel to bring your pet to its final resting place, as well as an environmental pro-tection, as board members say that ground water contamina-tion becomes a concern with backyard burials. Oakwood caretakers are put-ting the finishing touches on the space this fall, reseeding grass and putting in new land-scaping to the area. “We’re going to maintain and operate it to the same degree that we do for people,” said board member Jeff Allman. “Everything we do for your mom, we do for your dog.” Oakwood board members say that they would like to put a gazebo and later some perma-nent structure near the memo-rial garden to offer a place for viewing and funeral services. “We’re hoping it becomes more like a traditional funeral,” said Oakwood office manager Diane Vincent. “It’s as simple or as elegant as the family wants.”

Oakwood Cemetery will offer memorial space come spring for family pet burials.

It was a heap of toxic rubble, 40 feet high and seven sto-ries deep covering more than 16 acres. Soot and ash smol-dered, and dust, all that was left of thousands of annihilated things, was everywhere. Steel girders, twisted, tilted and sev-eral stories tall, looked ready to topple. Workers reporting for duty were warned to watch out for falling shards of glass. Where do you even start? Guerrero wondered. “But God said, ‘I’ll tell you where to do and what to do.’ “Rook toiled like a work-horse,” Guerrero said. And

not only in search and rescue. When the workers, scared and sad, realized there would be no survivors to rescue, their sor-row increased. “Some needed Rookie as a therapy dog, and Rookie cuddled up and put his big head on many shoulders.” It’s likely his service at The Pile cost Rookie his life. Ground Zero debris contained carcino-gens, and late in 2003, a mass in Rookie’s jaw was diagnosed as cancer – a particularly viru-lent and fast-growing cancer. Rookie died June 30, 2004. The big dog’s K9 training included handler protection, obedience, building searches, area searches, evidence searches, tracking, narcotics, K9 SWAT

and K9 therapy. “Rookie was all those,” Guer-rero said, “a true renaissance dog.” Rookie II is rather renaissance himself. He’s qualified in all of the above, except therapy. “The first Rookie was Dean Martin – suave, very serious and so photogenic, Guerrero said.

“He looked great in every photo, and every time he spotted a camera he’d adopt a dignified pose. “Rookie II? Jerry Lewis. Silly. I tell people, you have to learn about each dog. They’re all dif-ferent.”

Rookie, P.R. Dog Michigan and Rookie also tells stories of the on-duty

adventures of cop and dog and the dangers they faced in Sag-inaw, long ranked as America’s most violent city. In addition, the book covers Guerrero and Rookie’s project to help kids stay out of gangs. Before Rookie made his police dog debut, his trainers told Guerrero, “Your dog is your best public relations tool.” They were right, and Guer-rero, watching children lining up to pet Rookie, saw teaching potential. “Rookie and I started going into the schools,” he said,

“to help the kids just say no.” The kids talked to the dog.

“They’d tell Rookie: ‘You’ve got to come to my neighborhood. Bubby’s dealing drugs.’ “I eavesdropped and got lots of good leads.” He worked third shift so he could visit schools, which he did on his own time. Most nights, he got only four hours’ sleep. Though Rookie needed no help generating youthful enthu-siasm, Guerrero kept coming up

with added attractions. Rookie cookies, Rookie puppets, Rook-ie dolls, Rookie robots, Rookie t-shirts, Rookie cards. Word spread, and K9 cop and canine took their just-say-no show on the road, to South Dakota, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and more. Guerrero esti-mates he and Rookie gave pre-sentations to more than 250,000 kids. “The biggest mistake many police officers make, I tell them, is hanging around too much with other police officers. Go in the schools. Meet the children. See the good.” Guerrero retired from SPD in June 2011 and now works for a small police department in a small town. Oakley, Michi-gan – one square mile,” he said,

“as compared to Saginaw’s 18 square miles.” “People say, ‘Don’t you miss the excitement of Saginaw?’ I say, ‘Heck no. It’s nice to see people waving at you with five fingers.’”

Rainbow Garden I walked into my backyard and picked a rainbow of cherry tomatoes tonight. Small yellow, orange, red and purplish tiny tomatoes filled my container. The taste of these sweet orbs has no comparison to any pur-chased commercially. Tomorrow my lunch at work will have a bag of those tomatoes and a sliced cucumber, also from my back-yard. Gardening was a pursuit miss-ing from my life for a couple of decades while I was busy raising four children as a single mom and commuting to work five days a week. Once we lived on a farm where I gardened, then canned or froze tomatoes, green

and adding it to the cooking mixture. A sprinkle of feta cheese or shredded Parmesan were great finishing touches, even a scatter-ing of pine nuts over the top, plus a tiny bit of hot pepper flakes. Three years ago the City of Eyota received a grant from the Olmsted County SHIP program (Statewide Health Improvement Program) to start a community garden in town. Initially 12 plots were created the first year, with it expanding into 24 plots the sec-ond year. Logan was one of the first to take one of those plots. The initial year the efforts of 12 citizens were heroic and some were reasonably successful. However, the second year when a couple of truckloads of compost from the Olmsted County recy-cling site were added along with topsoil, the quantity of vegetables raised increased exponentially. It’s not so easy to learn how to garden, especially if you grew up not knowing what a weed looks like. Sometimes I would walk by and notice a fabulous button weed or ragweed growing as if it belonged in the community garden. Even after planting a garden with seeds and starter plants is successful, the needs for watering and weeding into the times when the heat becomes uncomfort-able can make the new gardener waver. Oddly, sometimes after mastering planting and caring for their plants, new gardeners neglect to pick their crops when they are ready. No, gardening is not easy, but once it’s mastered, the wonder of growing your own watermelon or cantaloupe and picking your own cucumbers instead of buy-ing them at a store becomes a motivating force. Not only is gardening good for adults, it a great way to teach children and expose them to new foods that are downright good

for them. What, a purple pepper, they might wonder? Yes, and it can be eaten fresh with ranch or dill dip or chopped up as a pizza top-ping. The most wonderful pizzas can be created with garden produce. My favorite is using a prepared crust—either dough in a bag or a precooked crust, then adding my own home-canned tomato sauce or using a homemade pesto paste as the base. Next, pile on the chopped vegetables starting with chopped spinach, chard or other cooking greens. Then add thinly sliced tomatoes, summer squash, and peppers. Sliced portabella or white mushrooms and perhaps some meat or shrimp, plus fresh oregano leaves stripped off the stem can round out the pizza. Ah

yes, for the adults adding a bit of hot pepper flakes give it a bit of zing, sprinkle on some olive oil and shake a bit of sea salt over it. Of course, top it all with a good pile of mozzarella cheese or a combo of cheeses. If growing your own garden doesn’t work in your life, perhaps visiting a local farmers market will. Let others do all the work of planting, weeding, watering and picking—you just have to stop by with your wallet. Pick out wonderful, unique, fresh veg-etables, the likes of which you will be hard pressed to find sold in a store. It almost goes without saying, but eating lots of vegetables is good for you too! However, it is so enjoyable eating them, don’t even think of that.

beans and pickles for the whole year. When we moved into town, gardening was left behind. Gradually, however I started gar-dening in pots on my deck…a cherry tomato, a pepper plant and lots of herbs. We created tiny gardens edged with patio blacks in the backyard where I could have short rows of beans or staked tomatoes. Enter my son who took over gardening at his grandparents’ farm a decade ago—as Logan has expanded his gardening, my cooking has changed. He tried growing turnips, kohlrabi, wax beans, roma tomatoes, red chard, leeks, purple onions, garlic, cab-bage, purple potatoes, dark green broccoli, orange beets and yellow crook-necked squash. I’d never eaten kohlrabi, tur-nips or rutabagas before, but I learned to eat them cooked in soups and vegetable stir-fries. Cooking became an adventure each evening as I tried prepar-ing concoctions with whatever Logan was growing. My standard was a stir-fry cre-ation I’d included in a booklet written for a class on herb gar-dening I had taught years ago. Dark green zucchini slices were combined with yellow squash, onion, and shreds of cabbage cooked in olive oil and seasoned with fresh chopped basil, sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Then I discovered chard. The stems could be sliced up like cel-ery and added early in the stir-fry process. The final step was chop-ping the dark green chard leaves

By Nate Langworthy A storm sewer reconstruction project in northwestern Rochester will have to wait until next year. The city council voted 4-2 to reject bids on the project, which would improved the storm sewer system along a stretch of 18th

Avenue northwest, due to a filing error. At the deadline for receiv-ing bids, Swenke Construction appeared to have submitted the winning bid at $321,284 and was informed of their likely award. However, a bid from Pember

Filing error delays NW Rochester projectCompanies was later found best-ing the bid by $7000. The public works department then recom-mended that Pember Companies be awarded the job because they had the winning bid and records indicated that it had been submit-ted on time. Swenke Construction protest-ed the award, causing council members to play it safe and start anew. “I don’t think that anything was done intentionally. I’m sure this will not help the project move along on the timeline we wanted, but at least we’re all doing the right thing here,” said council member Ed Hruska. Council members Sandra Means and Michael Wojcik voted

against rejecting the bids, hoping that the council would table the matter and an agreement could be reached before the next coun-cil meeting that would allow the project to go forward this year. “This has been an issue for quite awhile,” said Means, who represents the affected area. “They have been inundated with wet basements and other issues due to the inadequacy of the cur-rent storm system.” Work was to begin on Septem-ber 24th, but will now not have time to begin before winter with a new bidding process beginning. “I’m not sure the results would

Schlotthauer, Carlson, and Schrandt previously teamed up to construct a Peace Pole at Lin-coln K-8 School, where they each completed their final year last spring, completing their Bronze Award project. and was able to hook the girls up with some paint left over from RNeighbors Colorful Corners paintings. Children staying at the shelter also participated in painting the mural. “It was wonderful having them here, the kids really enjoyed see-ing them and being part of it,” said Schouweiller. By working toward comple-tion of the project, the girls are one step closer toward attain-

ment of the highest scouting honors, which they plan to attain by completing a Gold Award project, something they will have to do individually. Girl Scouts historically have not typically reached the highest honors available to them with the frequency that Boy Scouts do, and this group of girls would like to set an example to change that disparity. The girls, all incom-ing freshmen in Rochester high schools are currently forming ideas for what their Gold Award project will be. The scouts have embraced the civic involvement at the core of their pursuit. “It’s all about helping people and bringing joy,” said Schlot-thauer, “We wanted something really positive, something that would make these kids happy. It has a vibrant, homelike feel to it.”

Girl Scouts Bella Schlotthauer, Kari Schrandt, and Lauren Carl-son completed a project at the Women’s Shelter.

By Bill Lisser The Dover City Council voted for a two percent pro-posed levy increase for the gen-eral fund for the 2013 budget. That amounts to approximately $3,000. The council felt it was important to have that amount available, but they do have the opportunity to lower it or elim-inate it in December. Mayor Roger Ihrke said it is important to have the increase available if

needed because of the things that may affect the city. “In a community like this it is snow and how much we spend on snow removal,” said Ihrke. “We normally spend $25,000. Two years ago it was $60,000 and last year it was $16,000.” The 2013 budget will decrease significantly because of the road project in progress. The city will spend approxi-mately $300,000 on road

repair this year and will budget for $30,000 next year. Next month the council will look at water and sewer assessments. A second crew has been brought in to help with the County Road 10 reconstruc-tion project. The project is still on schedule to be completed by October 15. Because of some sewer lines not needing to be replaced, the project is cur-rently running under budget.

Dover City Council proposes levy increase service to Dover has been elim-inated and they will work to get the service restarted. With fall in the air, you may want to keep Saturday, October 13 open. That is the day for the Pumpkin Festival in Dover.

A Great Read!

The council did not adjourn and continued their meeting until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sep-tember 18. The reason for the extension is to meet with own-ers of a home that is partially in the right-of-way. The council wants to come to an agree-ment with the owners to keep the County Road 10 project on track. According to Mayor Ihrke, the owners know they have to make changes. The council is concerned with an issue that has come up because of the road construction. Bus
