Making the most of today’s fair

If you’ve already researched the exhibitors on MyCareerHub then you’ve got a head start. If not, don’t worry, you can use this guide to help you work out which exhibitors to approach.

Top tips

• Before you approach a stand, prepare some questions and think about the main points you want an organisation to know about you.

• Aim to demonstrate a real interest in the company by using this opportunity to get insights and tips from the people working there.

• Visit your top priority employer after you’ve talked with one or two others – this gives you a chance to warm up and build your confidence.

• Avoid opening the conversation with questions about application deadlines or whether the employer recruits international students. Instead focus on talking about the employer, their opportunities and what you have to offer.

• Do ask for business cards, or get the name of the person you are speaking to. Later, in application forms or at interview, you can refer to the person and something interesting they said.

• Stop at one of the Reflection Areas (dotted around the exhibition area) to note down key points you’ve learnt from exhibitiors’.

• Avoid walking around the fair in a large group. The exhibitor may not realise that you are interested in them, and you could miss out.

• Smile - enthusiasm is infectious! Be purposeful and confident, but also polite and courteous.

All talks are upstairs in the Bells Conference Room.There is no sign up required, just turn up.

11.30 – 12pm EGRF and beyond for international students with the Careers ServiceAre you an international student? Attend this session to get information on how to make the most of EGRF, how to approach recruiters, how to discuss your right to work with UK employers and what happens after the fair.

12.30pm – 1pm Developing Resilience with Teach First. In this talk, our guest presenter from Teach First will talk about the growing importance of developing a resilient mind-set. Resilience covers many things: overcoming obstacles, dealing with set-backs, coping with difficult situations, accepting criticism and dealing with rejection – both during job hunting and also in the workplace. Come along and find out how to approach situations a bit differently, enabling you to turn apparent failures into potential successes.

1.30pm – 2pm Quality over Quantity with Employ.ed Internships ProgrammeIn this session, our guest presenter from our Internships Team will focus on the importance of tailoring applications, giving examples of good and bad practice and sharing some tips on how to spend your time wisely when working on applications. The session will demonstrate the value of taking the time to submit a few great applications instead of large numbers of mediocre ones.

2.30pm – 3pm What next? Advice from the Careers Service and an Edinburgh GraduateA discussion between one of our Careers Consultants and an Edinburgh Graduate from EY who found herself at the end of her course without a graduate job lined up during the financial crisis in 2009. The session will aim to encourage and reassure you, offering some practical advice on next steps if you still aren’t quite sure what’s next and inspire you to believe that you can start planning now for the future you want – it’s never too late!
