Deduplication/Compression/Thin Provisioning

Enterprise-grade storage systems use these three methods to extend the physical

medium, increasing the effective storage available to the system. Deduplication and

compression eliminate redundant data and empty data spaces that occur due to data

segment movement. Thin Provisioning is a hardware feature that enables storage

capacity to be over allocated to applications and physical capacity to be consumed only

as applications write data. In addition, it reclaims the space when the application no

longer needs the disk space.

Reduced Infrastructure Costs – the use of these three methods lowers the amount of

physical storage resource needed, thus decreasing capital expenditures.

Cluster File System (CFS)

Enables multiple servers to share the same storage resources. Other aspects of CFS are

embedded in the following comments.
