    Students of the MATFL and MATESOL programs in the

    Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education

    (GSTILE) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies

    Submissions are encouraged from all teachers, graduate students, or other

    professionals working in the foreign language education field, including EFL.Abstracts may be submitted for presentations (formal lecture style with time

    for questions), interactive workshops, panel discussions or posters.

    Submissions should be relevant to the theme of this years Symposium:

    Real Language, Real Life.

    Particularly relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

    Authentic materials for language learning and authentic opportunities topractice language (i.e. telecollaboration and accessing heritage speakers

    as resources for learning)

    Social relevance in language instruction Service learning Development of intercultural communicative competency Content-based instruction (CBI) Careers relating to language education

    Submission Guidelines*

    The guidelines are provided below as well as on the Symposium website:

    The deadline for submission of abstracts will be Friday, February 28, 2014.

    Notification of acceptance of submissions will be sent via email by Friday,

    March 14, 2014. Submissions will be accepted through this online form:

    Whether the abstract is for a presentation, interactive panel discussionor practical workshop/demonstration, or a poster

    (All sessions will be allotted 50 minutes. Presentation speakersshould limit their presentations to 40 minutes to allow time forquestions.)

    The name(s) and affiliation of the author(s) The preferred method of notification: email, phone and mailing address The title of the presentation (no more than 10 words) An abstract no longer than 250 words including the focus of the

    presentation and its relevance to current work being done in the field

    The language in which the presentation will be given Interpretation into English from Chinese, French, German,

    Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish will be provided by MIIS

    students of interpretation A description of any equipment needed Any additional information Whether or not you would like to be considered to give a poster

    presentation if your abstract not selected for a full presentation

    B.U.I.L.D teachers and MIIS students are also encouraged to submit

    proposals. Presenters will be selected based on the reviewers evaluation of

    the anonymous abstracts.
