Our winning Regional Readers’ Cup Team (L – R) Max Williamson, Jackson Smiddy, Oliver Clifford and Henry Paton. This is the second year in a row that the Junior

School has won this competition. Congratulations boys!

From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents It was nice to welcome the boys back to school following the mid-year holiday. I hope all families enjoyed some rest and relaxation during this time. Semester One Reports When I welcomed the boys back to school on Tuesday morning I made mention of their Semester One Reports. At this time I asked the boys to think about their reports and any advice that was offered from their teachers about areas in which to improve. I then suggested not wasting a single day of school before putting this into action. Reinforcing this on the home front is a great way of making your son’s report a document of action, not simply one to be filed away. New Students As a school community we welcome four new students to the Junior School. Max Onley (3H), Archer Onley (5S), Sullivan Dominy (3H) and Fergus Dominy (5L) commenced their schooling with us this week. I extend a very warm welcome to the boys and their families and wish them a long and happy association with Toowoomba Grammar School. Staffing Mrs Alison Cantle, part-time Learning Support teacher for Years 5 and 6, remains on leave until the end of the term. Mrs Jo Jones will continue to cover Mrs Cantle’s lessons during third term. Mrs Jones is a highly experienced teacher, who has worked with us for several years in a number of roles. Mrs Jayne Davidson, Music Teacher (part-time) and Co-ordinator of Specialist Teachers, will cover Prep to Year 2 PE, along with Health this term in place of Mrs Jones. Staff Professional Learning and visiting Professors Junior School teachers at Toowoomba Grammar School have been working on the teaching of spelling over the past eighteen months. This has included significant work under the tutelage of Professor Beryl Exley from Griffith University. Professor Exley is the Deputy Head of School – Learning and Teaching in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith. In addition, she has a national reputation as the Federal President of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association. Professor Exley travels to Toowoomba Grammar School on a regular basis to work with all Junior School teachers, guiding their teaching of spelling and providing a mentor style relationship with the staff. In her most recent visit, on Monday 16 July, Professor Exley brought along two visiting literacy academics from America, Professor Cynthia Brock and Professor Fenice Boyd. Spelling remains a core skill for children and adults. In our digital age, it is all too easy to allow core skills such as spelling, reading and writing to slip. The Junior School staff understand that teaching the basics well will benefit their students and make them powerful with their literacy skills for life.

L – R Professor Cynthia Brock and Professor Fenice Boyd with Professor Exley

This was a special occasion for the Junior School staff, being able to draw upon the expertise of three visiting Professors, all specialists in children’s literacy development. The boys in the Junior School are most fortunate to have this type of investment in their education. University of Queensland research project Our School has been approached by Dr Kylie Burke, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, regarding a research project and survey of parents. The survey is part of the project Every Family: Australian Triple P System Population Trial being conducted by psychologists and researchers at the University of Queensland (UQ).

The survey aims to capture parenting experiences and beliefs about parenting support and raising children within their community. Parents of children aged 3-8 years are encouraged to complete an anonymous 15-minute online survey. This survey will assist university researchers better understand whether parenting support information and programs are reaching families. Further information is provided following my article, with a link to the survey that I encourage parents to undertake.

Academic Awards Assembly Our Semester One Academic Awards Assembly will be held next week on Thursday 26 July. Writing Competition Awards (first, second and third) and Academic Awards will be presented at this special occasion. This formal assembly will commence at 8.40am in the Junior School Hall and parents are most welcome to attend. Consequently, there will not be a normal weekly assembly on the same afternoon. Letters have been sent home to parents of all award recipients. Boys It is always good to have the boys back at school. Having visited several classrooms since the start of the week, I have heard some wonderful stories about the holidays. I have also seen boys fully engaged with the various aspects of their schooling. Our school is an interesting and vibrant place for boys! Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

Raising Children in Your Neighbourhood – Have Your Say Your community has been chosen to participate in a study conducted by the Every Family research project at the University of Queensland. This survey aims to capture parenting experiences and beliefs about parenting support and raising children within your community. Any parent or carer of children aged 3 - 8 years can participate. It only takes 10-15 minutes and you will have a chance to win 1 of 100 $50 Coles Myer gift vouchers for participating. Complete the survey online at:https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/racyn/

Participation is completely voluntary and confidential.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School

Students at School before 8.00am and after 3.30pm Your son is asked to wait in the breeze-way just outside the front office if he arrives before 8.00am. Teachers are not on duty until then. After-school supervision for boys is until 3.30pm. There will be no one to supervise students after this time. In the interest of the safety and well-being of your sons, we request that you collect your sons prior to this time. Co-curricular activities, such as Fitness and Chess Club, are exceptions to this. If boys have not been collected by 3.30pm, they will be taken to After-School Care and the fee will be charged to your school account. Thank you for your understanding in these matters.

Winter Uniform The boys are required to wear winter uniform in Term 3. The long sleeve shirt is not a compulsory item. When the weather is colder, your son must wear the school jumper as the first item of selection. If he needs more warm clothing, a navy blue or black t-shirt may be worn under the school shirt and he may also wear his vest under the school jumper. For inclement weather the boys may wear the dark navy track suit top over their school jumper. Prep: Sports shorts, short or long sleeve Prep shirt and tracksuit.

Years 1 – 3: Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and soft broad brim hat.

Years 4 – 6: Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and Akubra.

Friday is sports day. All boys wear Golds on this day. Golds include the school sport shirt, sport shorts, white TGS socks and predominately white sneakers. The TGS tracksuit may be worn if your son is cold. If your son runs out of white TGS socks, plain white shin high socks (crewe length) may be worn. Anklets or no socks are not acceptable. Boys are not to wear the TGS Hoodie to school during the week. Hats Akubras must not be out of shape and Akubras with holes in them will need to be repaired or replaced. Hair Hair must not be over the collar, must be neatly shaped at the back of the neck and not over ears. Extremes of hairstyles and lengths are not permitted (including very short haircuts or “fresh” cuts. School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. For those students who don’t yet have a school banking account with the Commonwealth Bank, parents are asked that they look online via the CBA website for this information and open accounts online accordingly. The program also offers financial benefits for our school. These include $5 for every account opened. Students also receive various rewards for deposit targets reached. Please encourage your son to open a Dollarmite account and make regular deposits. Peanut Allergy Toowoomba Grammar School, similarly to most schools in the Australia, has students with life-threatening allergies to nuts. Should these students ingest or come into contact with peanuts or food items containing peanuts or other types of nuts, the boys will suffer a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. This includes a trace of nut residue on their skin via contact with packaging materials. I respectfully request that parents refrain from sending their sons to school with peanut butter sandwiches or peanut or nut based food items including snack bars. Additionally, boys are not to share their food with each other at school. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

Casual Clothes Day in support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service

On Tuesday 29 May, we held a Casual Clothes Day to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We raised $514.15. Our donation will assist the RFDS to help the thousands of people who live, work and travel in remote, rural and regional Queensland. Thank you for your generous donations. I know the RFDS really appreciates our annual fundraising efforts.

From Head of Teaching and Learning Writing Competition Award Winners The Junior School Writing Competition was conducted last term with all boys from Prep to Year 6 participating. The text type varied across the year levels. The boys had to work through the writing process, first understanding the structure required for their text type then planning, drafting, proofing, editing and finally producing a finished piece of writing. The prizes on offer are significant, with first place in each class being awarded a trophy and a book voucher and second and third place boys receiving medallions. In addition, several boys in each class also receive Highly Commended certificates.

The boys’ writing went to independent judges for assessment. The judges, Mrs Jo Jones, Mrs Lucy MacFarlane and Mrs Heidi Russell, made some very positive comments to Junior School staff about the boys’ writing. I thank these ladies for judging this year’s competition. Congratulations to all boys who participated in the writing competition during Term 2. The results are detailed below and on the following page.

Music News Instrumental Eisteddfod A note with all times and venues for the upcoming instrumental eisteddfod will be sent home this week. Please refer to this letter for all instrumental ensemble involvement at the eisteddfod. Please be aware that instrumental solos are not included in the letter. Parents should refer to the schedule published by the eisteddfod committee, or contact their son’s instrumental tutor to find out times and venues for solos in the upcoming eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod will commence on Friday 27 July (week 2) and for Junior School boys will run through to Wednesday August 1 (week 3). In this lead up to the Eisteddfod, boys should be practising their repertoire consistently and also listing to recordings where possible to support their practice. Student Free Day rehearsals – Monday 16 July Thank you to all boys who made themselves available for our extra rehearsals on the student free day. We had nine separate ensemble rehearsals, as well as a variety of trios and quartets also spending time practicing for the upcoming eisteddfod. We also thank the parents of these boys for ensuring their son could be at rehearsals on this day. Ensemble rehearsals All ensembles resumed their regular rehearsals from the first day of Term 3. Please be aware that ensembles rehearse each week up until the last day of the term. If your son is unable to attend a scheduled rehearsal it is appreciated if the conductor is notified of his absence. Boys in Years 5-6 should be taking on the responsibility of emailing their conductor where they are aware in advance that they will be absent from a rehearsal. GPS Music Day of Excellence The GPS Music Day of excellence is to be held at St Joseph’s Nudgee College on Tuesday 7 August (week 4). This is an annual event on the GPS Music calendar. Last term a selection process for each GPS Ensemble took place in Brisbane, with hundreds of Musicians from Years 5-7 from nine GPS Schools nominating for chairs in each ensemble. In order to be nominated for the day, instrumental boys must have completed AMEB or Trinity Music exams as a minimum standard, as well as perform and rehearse regularly with their own school ensembles. Boys who have gained an invitation to this prestigious event should be commended. Readers’ Cup Challenge 2018

This competition, organised by the Children’s Book Council of Queensland, sets school against school in regional competitions to not only explore who reads enthusiastically, but more importantly what detail they remember. Students compete in teams of four in a “Trivia” style competition. In the Junior competition, over 20 schools were competing for the opportunity to represent the region at the State finals. Students are required to read five novels. Eight questions are presented for each book; some questions are multi-faceted and each question has a thirty-second-time limit. This is the second year our boys have won the Regional Readers’ competition and it is a marvellous achievement in light of the many additional activities our students participate in and more importantly because it requires a lot of discipline, independence and self-monitored learning behaviours. While I support the boys, they prepare for this competition in their own time and it is a true show of their character, initiative and teamwork that they did so well. Our Regional competition is of the highest standard and it is an incredible achievement to place, let alone win. The boys will now go on to compete at the State competition in September in Brisbane.

Junior School Readers’ Cup Competition I love Readers’ Cup. I love the enthusiasm that the boys bring to the library during this term because of Readers’ Cup. Readers’ Cup is an excellent opportunity for the boys to flex their muscles in a reading arena. It is also an opportunity for the boys to read more widely and to read different types of books. Term two is an exciting time in the library, mainly because of the boys’ enthusiasm and passion. The Readers’ Cup competition consists of teams of four to six students and each team reads from a list of five books. During the term, once a boy has read a book, he completes a quiz and if he achieves well in the quiz, he will receive a badge which is redeemed for a hot chocolate and chocolate. As a team sport, Readers’ Cup should be an enjoyable experience and one which nurtures talent while providing equal opportunities for a wide range of abilities. At the end of the term, the boys should have read at least one book (hopefully enjoyed the book), increased their reading skills and enjoyed taking part in a team challenge that wasn’t on a sporting field.
