From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Our annual Twilight Concert held last Friday night was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the school year. The relaxed atmosphere and the outdoor venue provided parents with the chance to talk to each other while enjoying something to eat and drink. It was also nice that the boys were able to sit with their families at some stage during the concert. All these factors made for a spectacular evening. I thank the boys and the teachers for their wonderful efforts and I hope you enjoyed the evening.

performance Reports End of year reports went home with the boys today. I am pleased that the vast majority of boys have had a very good year both academically, within the co-curricular program and behaviourally. I thank the teachers for preparing these documents for your benefit. Speech Day Awards Speech Day awards were announced in class today and are also mentioned in the boys’ reports. Teachers give considerable time and thought to these awards. I ask that all parents accept the professional and considered judgement of the teaching staff and understand that these decisions are often quite difficult to make. If a student ‘misses out’ on an award it is due to the fact that another boy (or boys) performed better. It is disappointing when awards are questioned and I encourage all parents and boys to accept the ‘umpire’s decision’. Staffing Earlier this year, Mrs Shelley Clews was employed on a contract to work with one of our Year 4 classes. This teaching position became available due to Mr Tim Bunce taking extended personal leave across second semester. As we don’t have any teaching vacancies for next year, there is not the opportunity to extend Mrs Clews’ employment at our school. I thank Shelley for the fine work she has done with the boys and parents in 4C and the way in which she has engaged with our staff. Junior School Supporters’ Group The Junior School Supporters’ Group hosted a range of social events during the year and raised funds for the benefit of the boys. I would like to commend the fine work of the Junior School Supporters’ Group in 2016. Mrs Megan Milner, President of the Supporters’ Group, spent significant time working for the benefit of the Junior School. I thank Megan for her endeavours on behalf of the students and for her support of the Junior School.

Mrs Rhonda Wilkie was the Treasurer of the Supporters’ Group and Mrs Jayne Parkin undertook the role of Secretary. Both Rhonda and Jayne were active in their support of and organisation with many of the Supporters’ Group functions and I appreciate their many and various contributions. The School is a better place as a result of the contributions of these parents and the many other parents who assisted with various functions and events. The Supporters’ Group’s AGM was held last week with the following positions being filled for next year: President Mrs Rhonda Wilkie Vice President Mrs Melissa Buckley Treasurer Mrs Robyn Dunn Secretary Mrs Lyn Paton I congratulate these parents and look forward to their contributions next year. Speech Day, Wednesday 23 November Parents are reminded that Speech Day will be held in the Senior School Assembly Hall on Wednesday 23 November, commencing at 9.00am. School holidays for the boys will officially commence following the Speech Day ceremony, which will conclude at approximately 10.20am. Please note, all boys from Prep to Year 6 are expected to attend Speech Day. Boys will still need to arrive at school prior to 8.20am in Blazer Uniform and spend a short amount of time in class before teachers take the boys to the Senior School Assembly Hall. Prize winners and musicians will need to arrive at school by 8.00am, proceeding straight to the Senior School Assembly Hall.

Conclusion As this is the final Junior School newsletter for the year, I would like to convey my appreciation to the Junior School staff for their outstanding work in 2016, ensuring we have had a wonderfully successful school year. Finally, and as always, I would like to acknowledge the efforts, achievements and enthusiasm of all the boys and congratulate them on a fine year. I wish all families an enjoyable, safe and relaxing holiday period, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Kind regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

Public Speaking Competition

The Junior School Public Speaking Competition occurs during the first few weeks of term four each year. Every boy in the school from Prep to Year 6 is expected to participate. Standing up and speaking in front of an audience is a life skill and one that many adults find confronting. By introducing public speaking to the boys from such a young age our aim is to develop confident and competent public speakers throughout the school. In the last newsletter a highly commended place was over looked.

Year 6 Dinner On Friday of this week, the Year 6 Dinner will be held in Junior School Hall and Pavilion commencing at 6.00pm. Toowoomba Grammar School staff, the Year 6 boys and their parents will gather in the Junior School Hall for the formal part of the evening. This will then be followed by dinner in the Pavilion. This is an annual event celebrating the boys’ passage from the Junior School to the Senior School. Each of the boys will be presented with a momento to mark this significant occasion. School Banking We are still looking for a parent who would be willing to take Dr Michelle Murphy’s place as the Commonwealth Banking Co-ordinator. If you are interested, please let me know. We’re for the gorilla. Are you? Recycle your old mobile phone to help gorillas in the wild. Please drop off your old mobile phone at the front office. It is important that these items are collected before the end of the school year. The location of the Lost Property box is near the side entrance to the Junior School staff room. Reporting Boys will receive their report card for this semester today. It is a great idea to read the report with your son, so you can highlight with him areas of achievement and areas for potential improvement. Our reports are written using positive language and it’s important that any discussion highlights what your son can do, rather than what he cannot. Report cards are an accumulation of assessment tasks that have been undertaken during the semester and teachers spend countless hours ensuring their reporting matches the needs and talents of your son. Curriculum Teachers are ready and raring to go to trial our new Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) curriculum next year. The HASS committee spent a full day developing the draft program and presented it to teachers at the staff meeting last week. Units of work have been developed for each term and will be resourced early in the new year. Online NAPLAN news ACARA has launched the NAPLAN Online public demonstration site. The site contains:

• Mini tests for each domain and year level • A highly recommended User Guide • FAQs • Technical requirements for running the tests

The main purpose of the demonstration tests is to familiarise students, teachers and parents with NAPLAN Online item types and functionalities. The demonstration tests are mini-tests that contain example questions to allow everyone to become familiar with the various types of technology NAPLAN Online uses. The direct link to the site is: http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplanonline-public-demonstration-site Articles/Research No limits: Can the new guidelines on kids and screens work? This article from The Conversation discusses new recommendations from the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) about children’s use of anything with a screen, such as computers, tablets, mobile phones, televisions and video games. The new guidelines have removed a previous recommendation that children should have no screen time before the age of two years. Read the article at http://theconversation.com/no-limits-can-the-new-guidelines-on-kids-and-screens-work-67635 Goodbye and Thank you As this is my last newsletter item, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and boys who have become such a large part of both my working and personal life over the past 6 years. I am confident that the Teaching and Learning area is in a very good place and is ready for further development and innovation in the coming years under the guidance of the new incumbent. May I wish you and your family all the best for the Christmas season and into 2017.

After School Care What we have done over the last fortnight This past fortnight we have been engaged with many different exciting tasks, the boys have been enjoying time inside and out. As we help support The Smith Family here at Camp Australia, last fortnight we received a letter from a primary school aged girl that we sponsor, the boys got the opportunity to write back to her with encouraging messages to help support her learning journey. We finished up our bags, bookmarks and bracelets to send to Bangladesh which the boys so thoughtfully created. What we have planned for the next week This week we have planned a lot of fun and engaging activities for the boys. We will be doing origami inside to help the boys along with their fine motor skills. Outside the boys will have some free time to explore their physical needs as well as some group games. Tuesday 22 November will be the last day for After School Care for the year, we hope everyone has a great holiday and we will see you all back in 2017!
