OUR JOURNEY FROM GOOD to GREAT...

In my previous contribution to the Afrimatters, I made the point that Afrimat can become a great company, a true success story. I stated that the factors needed for sustained success include exceptional people, good leadership, a culture of excellence, good discipline and humility.

Afrimat has embarked on a journey of becoming a world-class organisation.

To create this culture of excellence and continuous improvement, we need a healthy internal communication strategy.

I have asked Collin Ramukhubathi to head up a project throughout the organisation that will ensure effective communication.

We will be implementing channels through which we can communicate very efficiently from top to bottom and bottom to top. Proven techniques such as “small work group activities” will be adapted for Afrimat’s circumstances, to ensure that each worker is involved and feels part of the team.

This communication drive is in addition to our already successful skills development drive and our other successful continuous improvement programmes. My request to you is to support our communications drive and help us to make it successful.

Ek is in 2007 aangestel as Produksiebestuurder by Boublok.

Page 5: Edition 2012/02 31 September 2012 - Afrimat€¦ · 4. 5.

Daar was gemik en weer gemik. Daar was gekla, ‘Hoe dink julle moet ek daar bo kom?’

Ooooo neeee, nie by Boublok nie.

Groete,

Dirk SwanepoelProduksiebestuurder,Afrimat Boublok, Worcester

Mnqobokazi EssentialOils Project

As part of Afrimat Hluhluwe Quarry’s local economic development and social outreach, management approached the Hluhluwe Municipality (The Big 5 Municipality) to enquire about a suitable community project that we can get involved in.

We learnt that there are a variety of plants that grow wild in the Mnqobokazi area, that produce an essential oil which can be used when making inter alia perfume. After a comprehensive feasibility study, consultations and meetings with the tribal authority, the community itself, an international non-profit organisation called “Winrock”, The Big 5 Municipality, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Economic Development, Afrimat got onboard.

The extraction plant was erected on land that belongs to the community. We purchased a distiller to extract the oil from the Geranium plant. We purchased water tanks and we are in the process of purchasing a water pump to pump water into the tanks to be used to irrigate the seedlings. We are also in the process of fencing off the operational area.

Another community in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal is also running a similar project and they offered to assist the Hluhluwe community with marketing, packaging and eventually exporting of the oil.

As Afrimat is part of the Steering Committee, we will be monitoring the project on a bi-monthly basis to ensure the project is implemented according to plan. Read more about this exciting local economic development project in the next issue of Afrimatters!

TEACHER TRAINING The teachers (22) attending the Early Childhood Development level 1 and level 4 courses completed the courses in the middle of May. Their assignments have been completed, delivered to the college and we eagerly await their final results.

The level 5’s only complete their course later this year.

PORRIDGE Whilst Daphne and I were on holiday in England we were invited to visit Retford and to attend one of the Rotary Club of Retford’s monthly meetings. The meeting was over dinner at a very nice hotel where Dick Turpin, the famous highway robber, used to drink at the bar and assess the guests to decide which stage coach to rob the next day.

Terry Dunmore, the club president, asked me to speak to the members and their wives and to give them an overview of the Khanyisela Project. This I did and I assured them that all the money that they raise goes directly to the project, unlike many charities.

We would like to thank Terry and his wife Margaret for collecting us and putting us up for the night, and of course thank all the club members for supporting the Khanyisela Project.

Once the building has been completed, a group of gap year students from ATKV Drakensville are coming to paint the inside walls and ceiling, including some murals. They will also supply and install some shelving, put together and install some kitchen cupboards and do some work in the grounds.

We will then erect a patio roof on the front of the building and lay patio paving.

Thanks to generous donations from Industrial Water Cooling and a member of the Rotary Club of Retford, it was possible for us to go ahead with the planning and construction of this school.

Our thanks also go to Credit Guarantee for their donation of funds for other requirements for the Siqalakahle Pre-school. The items that the Credit Guarantee are funding include; covered patio and paving, fence around school yard, jungle gym / playground equipment, plastic tables and chairs, bookcases, big plastic containers with lids for storage, kitchen cupboards, sleeping mattresses etc.

DONATED KNITWEAROnce again the ladies of the Rotary Club of Retford knitted jerseys, hats and gloves and shipped them to us for the children. Daphne and I issued these to the grateful children early in June before the cold weather set in.

OVERALL PROJECT FUNDING I know we always say this but the Khanyisela Project can only survive due to the generous donations from concerned and caring forward-looking people such as the Rotary Club of Retford, IWC, Credit Guarantee, Afrimat, Value Logistics, The Cavern and the many individuals who support us. Our heartfelt thanks go to these companies and individuals.

Once the building and stocking of the Siqalakahle School is complete we will be able to consider our next project.

As always our thanks go out to everyone who has kindly donated funds, jumble, books and toys, and for your continued help and encouragement.

Thank you and best regards.

We all like to feel that we are special. Imagine being the centre of attention and receiving the red carpet treatment. According to Wikipedia “A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions, and has in recent decades been extended to use by VIPs and celebrities at formal events. More generally red carpet treatment and rolling out the red carpet, refer to any special efforts made in the interests of hospitality.” That would make you a VIP; a Very Important Person. What a difference from being just a number or one of the crowds or the one that matters in Afrimatters.

It all started in the beginning, when God made the first man. The pinnacle of creation, a man in the image of God! Just think how important Adam was to God. Then God made a wife for this man out of the same substance Adam was made out of - bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. She was a very important lady to both Adam and God. We find out in I TIMOTHY 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. And Adam so loved his wife that he chose to walk out into death with her showing exactly what Jesus Christ would do for us four thousand years later. JOHN 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

As soon as the man had sinned, God went looking for him. Even though they had made their own clothes out of fig leaves, they were still naked. Man cannot hide his sin from God. He needs another covering. GENESIS 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. In order to make a coat of skins, some animal had to die. If we look at the Passover and sacrifices that had to be offered according to the law, it is likely that the coats were made of lamb skins, pointing again directly as John the Baptist did: JOHN 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. Even before the law was written, we find HEBREWS 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain…yes, it was a lamb which God required as a covering for sin. Think of it – coats stained red by blood – God’s red carpet rolled out for Adam and Eve, the first VIPs.

JOHN 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

JOHN 15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. Here we see that Jesus Christ is our red carpet to life eternal. You are just as important to God as Adam was. ROMANS 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God. All of us are VIPs to God, and He has rolled out Himself as a red carpet for you.

GOD’s RED CARPET

Afrimat Aggregates Eastern Cape successfully negotiated for the supply of road building material required for the reconstruction of 13.3km of the N2 national road north of Port Elizabeth. The road consists of two separate double lanes and stretches from Houghan Park, just outside the new Coega Harbour, to the village of Colchester. The original tender was for both the sub-base material G5 (260 000 tons) and the G1 base course (140 000 tons).

During the early stage of construction, it was discovered that the material excavated from the borrow pit for the selected layer contained a layer of pebble below the calcrete. This material was suitable both in volume and quantity, for the manufacture of the G5 sub-base on-site. After further negotiations Afrimat Contracting Division was awarded the contract to manufacture the G5 layer material on-site.

A missionary had been trying for years to convert the chief of the people he was ministering to. The chief was of the opinion “your religion is too cheap”. On the eve of his departure back home, the chief gave the missionary a very precious pearl. The missionary said “I cannot accept this, let me give you something for it”. After an argument the King said “you cannot pay for this pearl, my son lost his life diving it out.” This gave the missionary the breakthrough he had been looking for and he said, “Oh King, the salvation I have been trying to offer you is not cheap! It’s free, but not cheap. God’s son gave his life to pay for your salvation. You cannot pay for it.” All you have to do is accept it. There are 360 degrees in a full circle, let us say 360 directions you can walk in,

and only one of those directions is a route marked out by a red carpet – God’s red carpet. It’s your choice to be a VIP. Choose the direction that matters.

Accomplishments

During June 2011, the Afrimat Contract Crushing Team, led by site foreman Frikkie Basson, established the crushing and screen plant alongside the N2 highway and began the sub-base production. The G1 base course was produced and supplied by Afrimat Aggregates (Denver), some 50km from the start of the project. Some careful planning had to be done by Jeff Hoffman, production manager and Dries Brand, production foreman and the production team. Extended hours and night shifts had to be worked to ensure that the sufficient stock would always be available, so as not to disrupt Afrimat’s normal production schedule. The stringent COLTO specification for G1 material was achieved by working closely with the contractor and by consistently producing the material within the required grading specification. The layer work of the contract is nearly in completion, the sub-base produced on stock pile has been carted onto the road with only a small section to be completed. The G1 material of the east bound lane has been completed and we are at 50% of the west bound lane. The excellent team work from the Afrimat commercial quarry Denver and the contracting team, has contributed to Concor Roads Division being on track to deliver the completion of the contract on time.

DefinitionMeans an apparatus attached to any machine for the purpose of preventing persons from being injured by moving parts of such machine. For a guard or fence to be effective it must be so constructed that a person is prevented from reaching the danger area (nip-points, moving parts, etc.). A person may normally be regarded as capable of reaching upwards, over, into, around or through a guard or fence and all five of these aspects must be taken into account when considering the effectiveness of a guard or fence.- Guidelines for guards:• Every exposed and dangerous machine part within normal reach must be effectively guarded, in order to reduce the risk of serious injury or even death.• Access to dangerous areas or points must be prevented.• The guard must be a part of the machine, without influencing the machine structure.• The guard must not create additional dangers like sharp corners or sharp edges.• The guard must be so designed that easy access to service points can be obtained.• The guard must be strong enough to withstand normal vibration, wear and tear.• The guard must be rust and fire resistant.• Where mesh covers are used to fence off a moving part, the opening in the mesh/expanded metal must not exceed 10mm x 10mm. It may be assumed that there is no reach through an opening of 10mm x 10mm or less as fingers cannot normally be admitted. If the opening is such that it will admit one, two or three fingers the reach is restricted by the roots of the fingers, a working clearance normally not exceeding 100mm must be allowed.

• Elongated openings: (openings with parallel sides) Openings up to 6mm wide may be disregarded. The guard or fence so constructed may virtually be regarded as a sheet and a working clearance of approximately 25mm is all that is required.

26.

Health & Safety:Currently there are too many injuries and fatalities occurring in the mining and construction industries, due to:• Ineffective machine guarding, machine guarding that’s not replaced after cleaning/maintenance and/or even no machine guarding on plants.• Lockout of plant at the control room and control panels that are not done.

Machine GuardingThe following will help you to understand what a machine guard is and when and where to be installed.

S.H.E - My Responsibility

Opening greater than 6mm but less than 13mm will admit part of a finger and requires at least 100mm clearance from danger points. Openings in excess of 13mm but not greater that 80mm are subject to the following formula: X = 10Y (Where X = reasonable safe distance from danger point in mm. Y = width of opening in mm) When the opening is sufficient to admit the whole arm and the small portion of the shoulder, the reasonable safe distance is based on the distance from the fingertips to the armpit, which may be assumed to be 0.85m.• All guards should be correctly and securely fitted before starting/operating machinery after cleaning and/or maintenance work has been done.• No machine/equipment shall be started/operated unless all guards are in place.• No guard shall be removed while the machine is in operation.• No person is permitted to work on moving parts of any machine while the machine is in motion.• No loose clothing/jewellery/long hair may be worn near rotating or moving machine parts.• Guards must be maintained.

LockoutNo person shall be allowed to do any maintenance and/or repairs on any part of a plant, unless he/she ensured that the power supply to such machinery is switched off and locked out or disconnected, and that the power supply remains disconnected or switched off until the maintenance and/or repairs have been completed.

EnvironmentOur environment is currently under a constant threat of being permanently harmed and scarred, due to activities and spillages that are not managed. Have a look at the following two topics that cause harm to our environment:PCBs and Spillages:

• What is PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls)?PCBs are a group of synthetic oil-like chemicals used in some of our transformers. Until their toxic nature was recognised and their use was banned in the early 1980s, they were used as insulation in electrical equipment – particularly transformers.

• Why PCBs are so dangerous? They are considered to be serious poisons; it has shown to cause damage to the reproductive, neurological and immune systems of wildlife and humans:

Known effects are: Cancer Headaches Poor infant habituation Thyroid dysfunction

Possible effects are: Liver and kidney damage Reproductive damage Depression/aggression

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our fellow colleague, Thembalethu Ngcongolo.

Thembalethu started his career at Afrimat Readymix (Cape) as a Front End Loader, thereafter he underwent training and qualified as a Code 14 Mixer Truck Operator. Thembalethu completed 10 years of service at Afrimat Readymix (Cape).

He will be sincerely missed by the Afrimat Team.

IN MEMORIAM

When buying or servicing our transformers, we must make sure that they are PCB free and stay that way!

• Spillages:Spillages are endangering /hampering our future lifespan of all water resources and our natural fauna & flora in South Africa! This occurs due to dumping in areas not defined for it.

Please ensure that the removal of all: • HCS takes place and is done by accredited companies, disposed of correctly and at facilities equipped to handle it. • Domestic waste must be taken to a local dump or landfill that is registered and maintained by the local municipality and capable of handling waste it receives.

Examples of SPILLAGES:• Hazardous Chemical Substances (HCS) that get dumped in the veld, rivers, quarries, etc. diesel, oils, grease, paint, thinners, paraffin, and other chemicals.• Domestic waste gets dumped in the veld, rivers, quarries, etc. – daily rubbish from the offices, plant and workshops.• Defective and / or reject product gets dumped in the veld, rivers, quarries, etc.

Another unfortunate incident of theft occurred which led to the following article.

If we take the values of Afrimat namely trust, integrity, respect, accountability, customer satisfaction and team work, and compare it in context with theft, it is clear that it is out of bounds and not in line with our before-mentioned Afrimat values. Individuals who steal cannot be trusted and they lack integrity. They lack respect for the company and their fellow employees and their own friends and family.

Individuals who steal normally lie about or deny the theft, therefore they do not take account-ability for their own actions. There is no team work in theft, only dragging others down who join in the theft or benefit from the stealing. The consequences for being caught include (but not limited to), dismissal, a criminal record, jail time, family and personal problems.

Theft cannot be justified in any way or means and in short, stealing is wrong. Not to report criminal activity that you are aware of makes you an accomplice to the activity.

So, the question is: if you are aware of criminal activity, what should you do?• Speak to your foreman/supervisor about the incident. • If you are uncomfortable about naming yourself, write an anonymous note about the incident. • Alternatively, speak to the direct superior or your HR department.• Alternatively, phone the officials at the Whistle Blowing Hotline to remain anonymous: 021 917 8845/ 47.

By living your company values, you can reduce crime in South Africa. Start at your home and at your work and you will see a difference.

Veteran biker, 72-year-old Roy van Rensburg, has made his mark in motorcycling circles and has become one of the most recognisable personalities in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth.

Roy and his classic Honda Pacific 800, fondly named “Roy’s Toys”, go everywhere together and he can easily be spotted on breakfast runs wearing his legendary springbok-skin biking jacket adorned with a collection of rally badges worth over R300 000.

Roy became famous when he broke the world champion’s – Kork Ballington – lap record at the Roy Hesketh circuit in Pietermaritzburg in 1972. Sadly his determination to become a professional racer came to an end when he had neck surgery. Yet still to this day Roy has kept his love for the sport alive by attending numerous rally events including the PE 200 event that took place in January.

During his career, Roy had the fortunate opportunity to race against such well-known local names as Ballington, Tiny Marriner, Peter Aitken and Richard Borain. “They were all fantastic riders and it was great to compete against them.”

Because Roy attended so many motorcycling rallies over the years, he has run out of space on his favourite jacket for all the badges he collects. He bought the jacket at the Valley of a Thousand Hills in Durban and has not seen anything like it since. Roy’s one-of-a-kind jacket is a definite eye-catcher whenever he attends rallies and people love to be photographed with him.

At the young age of 18 Roy started racing motorcycles and he bought his first bike in 1960 – it was a Triumph – he hasn’t been without a bike since. Another fantastic feat is that, in his 54 years of riding, Roy had never fallen off his bike or had an accident.

Well, Roy and bikes were obviously meant to be together and we wish him and his unforgettable jacket all the best of luck for the future.
