Greetings!T h i s n o t e c o m e s a s a customary, but definitely not to bore you readers out there! It all comes out as a product of c o l l e c t i v e e ff o r t a n d brainstorming sessions of members at the Editorial Team. Sure these are some heavy words but true to every bit. This twice-yearly newsletter comes a s a c o m m u n i q u é t o disseminate information to the masses on the current affairs on and off campus, of which COEP is a part. For the VIth edition, we, at the editorial team have strived to pep up the design, made the articles shorter, spiced up few titles, added cartoons, and included achievements so that the readers have no room for reluctance in glancing through. Also, the e-edition has been a monthly matter that's posted on Facebook, mailed to your college id and uploaded on the college website in both jpeg as well as pdf formats for your easy perusal. Team Abhijaat looks forward to publish many more such editions, getting better each time with your contributions, feedback and support so that all are served hot the news that comes straight from the current semester and are abreast of the works, efforts, a c t i v i t i e s , t a l e n t s a n d achievements of the COEP fraternity. W i t h t h i s d i l i g en t v e h e m e n c e b e g a n Zes t ' 15 , t he mos t awaited event with a massive participation of over 105 colleges. Zest, t h e Annua l I n t e r -College National Level Sports Meet of COEP entered into its 13th successful edition this year. The event began with the inauguration on 23rd January and concluded with the Pr i ze- D is t r ibut ion ceremony on Republic D a y. Z e s t ' 1 5 h a s w i t n e s s e d h i g h l y enthusiastic & energetic

c ompe t i t i o n s . The sports fest was highly appreciated by the d i g n i t a r i e s , rep resen ta t i ves o f s ponso r s p r e sen t , Gabriel being the chief-sponsor.The Zest gives student a base to showcase their dexterity, talent and endu rance . I t has emerged as one of the best and most awaited s p o r t s e v e n t s f o r students & athletes. It involves various indoor & outdoor sports and body-building forms the major attraction for Zest. The Zest special events were back this year, promoting open participation among our college's students, in t he games o f Box Cricket, Tug of War, 3-A-Side Volleyball, Futsal, Bridge and Sports Quiz as well. The athletics events were held on Sanas ground while rest of the games were organised within college premises. COEPians yet again, bought laurels to

the college in many sports like Volleyball, Kho-kho, Athlet ics, B r i d g e e t c . T h e performance was a team effort o f the students who have practiced rigorously and participated with utter sportsmanship. The Zest organizing c o m m i t t e e a l s o organized a sports t r a i n i n g c amp f o r chi ldren from Pat i l E s t a t e C o l o n y i n co l l abo ra t i on w i t h Pankhudi NGO wherein t he ch i l d r en we r e coached for Football. The main was to spread awareness of sporting culture and help new talents to mould their future. During this period, children learnt f r o m b a s i c s t o a r e s p e c t a b l e l e v e l replicating the theme of Zest'15 'Prayaan - Zero to Zenith'.The event received an overwhelming support f rom our D i rec tor, Deputy Director, Deans, HOD's, Vice-President

Gymkhana, Prof. P. V. Tfor COEP's Final Year B.Tech and M.Tech branches that begun on 25th August 2014 w i tnessed a whopping 81%* of the s t u d e n t s g e t t i n g placed in either a Dream or a Core or a Mass Rec ru i tment Company!There were a few modifications in the Placement Procedure this year. Firstly, the Single Job Policy was brought back allowing students to secure a job either at a Mass Recruitment or a Core Company and then

ruling the students out the process if a job offer was given to them. Also, on Day 1 of Mass Recruitment, four companies namely Infosys, Accenture, Cognizant and Wipro c o n d u c t e d t h e i r p r e l i m i n a r y recruitment process together. Students could appear for all four and could get also job offers from all four.The fi r s t week o f placements saw Dream Companies arrive at C O E P. T h e y w e r e followed by the Core companies. However, the record breaking

day was Day 1 of Mass Recruitment -on that truly memorable day, we saw students of COEP being handed over 679 job offers which was in a process, a breaking and making of its own placement records of all seasons; succeeding success!A t o t a l o f 1 1 8 compan ies v i s i ted COEP this year out of which companies like Directi, eBay, Ideas and Xoriant Solutions, which had not come last year, arrived at COEP to hand out job o ff e r s . T h e D e p a r t m e n t o f

Computer Engineering chronicled 94.81% placements followed by Instrumentation & Control with 94.44% and IT with 89.87%. Electrical Department repor ted 85 .14%, ENTC as 84.93%, while Mechanical as 81.76%. C i v i l D e p a r t m e n t ensued with 76.19% s t u d e n t s p l a c e d , M e t a l l u r g y w i t h 6 7 . 6 0 % a n d P r o d u c t i o n w i t h 5 9 . 6 8 % . The English Debate Club of College of Engineering, Pune

organized the fourth revamped edition of the COEP Mode l Un i ted Nat ions (COEPMUN) Conference on the 13th and 14th December, 2014 in association with the college itself. The C o n f e r e n c e s a w participation from all over the country, thus contributing towards making Pune a major part of the flourishing MUN circuit.A Model United Nations (MUN) Conference is currently one of the most upcoming fo rms o f formal debate. It is a simulation of the United Nations Organization ( U N O ) , i n w h i c h delegates represent a country in a particular

UN Committee. The delegates formulate political positions based on the actual policies of t h e c o u n t r y t h e y r e p r e s e n t , o n a dedicated agenda.COEPMUN'14 comprised 5 UN bodies, namely: UNSC, UNHRC, ECOSOC, DISEC and ILC. The MUN a l s o s i m u l a t e d 2 committees exclusively for school students, hence widening the M U N ' s b a s e . T h e Conference boasts of a h igh l y expe r i enced Executive Board that enhanced the quality of debate. To promote the MUN culture further, a training session to learn all about the basics of MUNing was conducted a month prior to the event.The Debate Club hopes to make COEPMUN'15 bigger and better. The Beast of Fear

I was always a scared student when in school. Especially when it came

to Mathematics, I was a complete loser. Oh what not I would do just to avoid it! I would literally have fever, stomach-aches, nausea just at the thought of Performing in Math… So much was my fear of the subject that once I faked illness and skipped the exam (don't worry it was just a Unit test)! Despite all these horrific experiences and an almost-panic-driven-hysteria, I took it up in higher secondary for the sheer love of the subject. Much later I realized I was actually good (if not a genius) with numbers; I was quite interested in Statistics. And it was even later that I realized all that I had in my childhood was not actually the fear of Math but the fear of Performing in Math. Makes a big difference, doesn't it? Most of the times our fears are not defined, not because we don't know what we are afraid of but because we are worried about what will happen when we face those fears, what we would do, whether or not we will be able to handle them, etc.

etc. And we have in a way learnt to live in this 'it-would-mean-the-end-of-the-world' sphere of fear, which ironically we ourselves have created. It's all really in our minds; the best of us and also the worst of us. So, the next time you enter into this sphere, use the scientific reasoning technique and ask y o u r s e l f “ w h a t ' s t h e guarantee that it will end badly?”, “can anyone really prove this?”, “and if it does end badly, is there no way I can try again or is it really the end of the world?” Mostly the answers would be a big “NO” to all such questions, and if they are “Yes”, well, then my friend, you really need to start all over again! I can't un-do my childhood fears, but I can surely re-do the measures to handle those fears.

CC o n s t r u c t i o n . Demol i t ion. They define the everyday scenes on and off the College of Engineering, Pune. The erection of the flyover is in full swing since last year and involves the use of h e a v y e n g i n e e r i n g equipment. As a result, using the footpath/road a long South is h ighly dangerous, especially from the Traffic Police Post till the Out-Gate of South Campus. So the students are often compelled to enter the North Campus by crossing the Sancheti Bridge and then enter South Campus through the subway. To alleviate the inconvenience a small gate is provided from 7am to 8 pm through the wall of parking area oppos i te to E lec t r i ca l Engineering Department- a

sloped stepping stones like - balance yourself path; its location changing each month. Also in meetings, the HODs noticed that a lot of thefts have started to occur. There have been thefts of goods of t h e I n s t i t u t e a n d individuals ' propert ies because of breaking of wall at several places by PMC contractor for flyover construction. The boundary has become considerably porous of which the outside elements have started taking undue advantage. Even the security agency was changed recently and hence their staff is not familiar with the college students and faculties, so w e a r i n g I - c a r d s i s mandatory for all.In addition, recently there were problems related to internet access in college.

Now McAfee has been replaced by Sophos. The process took a few days and hence internet was not available for almost a week in the month of March. Also, the constant noise of bui ld ing construct ions distract students during l e c tu res i n Academ i c C o m p l e x . S i m i l a r l y , const ruc t ion o f BHAU I n s t i t u t e nea r Ma th s Department makes the situation worse.To fan the flame, the Pune Metro project is in the process of being sanctioned and is expected to be a shot in the arm of Pune's Public t r a n s p o r t s i t u a t i o n . Howeve r t h e c u r r en t alignment of the routes poses several problems- l e g a l , p r a c t i c a l a n d economical that seem to have been neglected while proposing the routes. The

routes if implemented will cause more problems than solutions, one of which is the further reduction of our college campus. According to the metro plan, the heritage will be losing its ground and two hostel buildings-Block A & B.Efforts are being made by the Alumni Association of C O E P t o f o r c e t h e reconsideration of the current Pune Metro Plan. A petition is being signed by maximum possible students and faculties to make slight change in the alignment which will thereby take care one of the oldest institutions in Asia. Despite these negativities, the students' c l an has p roved tha t nothing can come in way of their success and talking about these challenges, COEPians know to devise their own ways for it all.

Jthat the quizzing culture wasn't so popular in our college, up came the very first Quiz Week organized by the Boat Club Quiz Club. The r e was a qu i z f o r everyone, with themes ranging from Current Affairs, Football, to Movies and Food, catering to our students' varied areas of interest. COEPians showed their enthusiasm for quizzing by showing up in large numbers for most of the quizzes. The members of the BCQC conducted the quizzes in the last week of February. The winners of the quizzes

bagged Crossword vouchers (that they probably made good use of in the Jeffrey Archer book signing event!). The Current Affairs, GK, Football, Movies and Food quizzes were 2-member team events for COEP students, and there was a General Solo Quiz open for all college students too.Let's witness the quizzing flare in our college and participate in more quizzes in and around Pune. We look forward to the next edition of the Quiz Week, which we hope will be back with a bang and receive more participation from budding quizzers.

Team Robotics has added yet another feather to its cap by

winning the Best Manual O p e r a t o r s & B e s t Innovative Design award at Robocon 2015 held from 5-7 March, 2015. The team dominated the practice sess ions & the Super League stage and was a top contender for winning Robocon 2015 entering the quarter stage with first rank amongst 85 teams. Unfortunately, they missed a service point in the quarter final game and were knocked out.Nevertheless, the machines and technology used for shuttle hitting, tracking and prediction and base drive

maneuvering by Team COEP in Robocon 2015 were extremely superior.

OEP'S Team Nemesis

CRac ing, the team which designs All-Terrain Vehicles for the BAJA SAE Championship, has stood victorious at the competition for third time in a row. The SAE BAJA team has secured the “Overall Championship” from among 120 contenders pan - India. The competition was held from 19th to 22nd February 2015 at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh.Along with becoming the Overall Champions, Team

Nemesis also won several other awards such as:Durability- 1st Place, Raftar (Fastest Lap)- 1st Place, Acceleration- 1st Place, Hill climb- 1st Place, Innovation- 2nd place, CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)- 2nd place, Build Quality- 2nd place, Safest Car- 2nd place. Apart from these accolades, the team has managed to win a cash prize of Rs 8.65 lakhs. Indeed, the team leaves no stone unturned to ace the race.

TDevelopment Cel l (ED-Cell) celebrated its first ever ED Weekend on 11th & 12th October '14 to p r o m o t e a n d c r e a t e a w a r e n e s s a b o u t entrepreneurship with a unique theme - "Ventures that Matter". The weekend was kicked off with a talk by Mr.Sanjay Inamdar, co-founder of BHAU Institute, who talked on "Stepping into the start-up era: Prospects and Challenges". He stressed that we should not let the fear of failure stop us from making a start. The talk was followed by a bra instorming sess ion wherein the audience was asked to choose random words related to start-ups and come with a unique start-up idea encompassing

these words. With an aim to provide a platform for interaction and networking for entrepreneurs, the Open Coffee Meet was held. The meet included over 35 e n t r e p r e n e u r s f r o m different fields and age groups who shared their experience over a cup of coffee. The final event that was held was the Annual Biz-Quiz, a quiz to test the basics of business world. Out of the 39 teams that participated, the winning t eam was a c ros s o f students from Datta Meghe COE, Mumbai and Institute o f M a n a g e m e n t Development & Research, Pune. ED-Cell aims to conduct more such events and fulfill its motive to plant seeds of entrepreneurship among the youth.

Tinitiative of students o f C o l l e g e o f Engineering, Pune to work and research on 'Project Mercury' whose aim is to design, build and operate a "Net Positive Energy Solar Powered House" to compete in the Solar Decathlon Competition in 2017. The US Department of Energy, Solar Decathlon is an international competition t h a t c h a l l e n g e s 2 0 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective and energy effic ien t so la r powered prefabr icated house. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production. Excellence in multiple fields is a must to render an all-round best project.The main motive of the

team is to come up with innovative and executable p l a n s t o d e s i g n a n d engineer energy efficient h o u s e s . W i t h t h e consumption of electricity multiplying every single day, this is one of the hot topics for research around the world. An introductory session about the team was held in the mini Auditorium on 5th February and the induction interviews were conducted on 13th and 15th March '15.The team participating in the actual event (to be held in 2017) will only consist of all those students who are then a part of the institute. Other senior students and faculty members will then act as mentors and will stand as a knowledge bank to amateur team students. We wish the newest team of COEP all the very best in their endeavors.

Hcongratulations to o u r b e l o v e d i n s t i t u t e a s a l l n i ne u n d e r g r a d u a t e engineering programmes at COEP have received accreditation from the N a t i o n a l B o a r d o f Accreditation, New Delhi (NBA). The programmes- Civil, Electrical, Metallurgy, Production (Sandwich), Computer/IT, Mechanical, E l e c t r o n i c s a n d Telecommunication and In s t rumen ta t i on and Control have been given NBA accreditation for a period of 5 years.The NBA is an autonomous body established by the All India Council of Technical E d u c a t i o n ( A I C T E ) entrusted with the task of undertaking accreditation of technical education programmes of institutes a l l o v e r I n d i a . A l l programmes had been accredited under the Tier-2(General) Status for 5 years from 2012, while in

2 0 1 4 t h e n i n e u n d e r g r a d u a t e p r o g r a m m e s w e r e accredited with the Tier-1 (Wash ing ton Acco rd) status.The process of accreditation involved a detailed on-site evaluation of the campus during 14th-16th February 2014 and 28th-2nd March 2014 by two expert teams. The reports submitted by the teams to the concerned authority deemed the courses satisfactory.This particular status of accreditation is extremely prestigious for an institute as it gets recognized by 16 other signatory member countries of the Accord including the accreditation b o d i e s o f Au s t r a l i a , Canada, Singapore and the United States. Having this accreditation is a golden ticket for COEP to get recognition of the quality of education given here at the global level and to hoist it to the world class category.

Phonored w i th the Nat ional Medal of Science by the President of Un i ted States , Barack Obama, at a ceremony organized at the White House on 20th November, 2014. He was among the top 1 9 s c i e n t i s t s a n d researchers who were bestowed the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and I n n o v a t i o n . The Nat ional Medal of S c i e n c e i s a n h o n o r conferred by the President of t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s t o individuals in the fields of science and engineering who have made impor tan t c o n t r i b u t i o n s t o t h e advancement of knowledge in behavioral and social sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics a n d p h y s i c s . P ro fessor Ka i l a th was recognized by this award for h i s t r a n s f o r m a t i v e contributions to the fields of

information and system science, for distinctive and sustained mentoring of young scholars and for translation of scientific ideas i n t o e n t r e p r e n e u r i a l ventures that have had a s i g n i fi c an t impa c t o n i n d u s t r y . Professor Kailath graduated from COEP in 1956 and went on to complete his post-graduation and doctorate from MIT, USA. He holds the distinction of being the first Ind ia-born s tudent to receive a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from MIT USA. Professor Kailath is c u r r en t l y t h e H i t a ch i Ame r i c a P r o f e s s o r o f Engineering, Emeritus, at Stanford University where he has supervised over 80 PhD. theses. He has co-f o u n d e d m a n y h i g h technology companies and c o n t i n u e s t o b e a n inspiration for his students and a role model for us COEPians.

It was four days of intense competition, learning and lots of fun

for the students of Planning Department in the biting cold of Bhopal at the XVI Annual NOSPlan Convention held at the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhouri, Bhopal from 26th-29th December 2014. The National Organization of S tuden t s o f P l ann ing (NOSPlan) is a student's body, currently consisting of 1 8 m e m b e r p l a n n i n g institutes and growing in strength every year and the annual convention is an ideal platform for the students of planning to m e e t , i n t e r a c t a n d de l ibera te on cur rent

planning issues and trends in India and the world, in the f o r m o f v a r i o u s competitions, both formal a n d i n f o r m a l .The theme for the latest convention was 'Cities for All' and was aptly named 'Samavesh ' to s ign i fy integration of all strata of society to build just and inclusive cities. There were interesting talks by eminent architects and planners on s l u m r e h a b i l i t a t i o n , inclusive cities and planning for smart cities. The formal competitions held included a master plan review for any Indian city, a 'Current P rac t i ces ' case s tudy competition practices in physical or policy planning of an Indian city and it's comparison with a similar practice in any South Asian city, debates, quizzes and thesis presentations all centered on the convention theme. The informal events i n c l u ded d rama , l i v e performing arts, design, movie making, photography and many on-the-spot

competitions. A unique addition to the l ist of c o m p e t i t i o n s w a s ' P l a nog ram ' a s t ud i o marathon of sorts, in which participants were given a time frame of only 48 hours to plan and design a village potter's neighborhood. They were expected to present their plans in 3D form. Apart from being challenging enough due to t i m e s h o r t a g e , t h e participants were given constraints every 12 hours w h i c h a l t e r e d t h e i r envisioned plans to a great extent. In this edition COEP proved that 'awaaj' is indeed COEPcha by generating the loudest cheer and winning the most enthus iast ic c o l l e g e c o m p e t i t i o n . Besides, COEP bagged the first pr ize in the l ive performing arts category. With its combination of dance, visual effects and live sand art by Mayur C h a u r e w e g a v e a n important message on treating animals well, and

the show stood out amongst the others. COEP also won second prize in the movie making competition for portraying the theme of inclusive cities well while the actors of the movie got a special trophy for being the 'Best Cast'. This was a splendid performance by our planning students, this being only their second appearance at NOSPlan. At the annual elections held for the NOSPlan executive council, Mr. Akshay Patil of TY B.Tech Planning was elected as National Web M a n a g e r f o r 2 0 1 5 . Samavesh'14 concluded with a visit by all delegates to the beautiful stupas at Sanchi and was a great success. Furthermore, it is an honor for Planning Department of COEP to have won the bidding process and get elected as the next host college for the XVII Convention to be held in December 2015.
