Intrepid forms global JV THERE’S been a seismic shift inthe adventure travel sectorovernight, with the announcementof a major joint venture betweenIntrepid and European travel giantTUI (TD breaking news). Intrepid Travel will be combinedwith TUI’s portfolio of adventurebrands to create PEAK AdventureTravel Group. Intrepid co-founder DarrellWade will be ceo of the newventure which will incorporateover 20 brands including Gecko’s,Peregrine, Oz Experience,Pinnacle Tours, TrekAmerica,Exodus, Guerba and Headwater. Newly appointed Intrepid mdGeoff Manchester (TD 07 Feb)emphasised that it was “businessas usual” for the brands, which

will continue to operate separatesales forces, compete in themarketplace and contractindividually with wholesalers. Manchester said the moveaimed to expand the adventureand experiential travel segment, and would “allow each brand tofocus on its area of specialisation,so they’re not all doing everythingin adventure travel.” The JV will allow someeconomies of scale - and thuspotentially “greater valueholidays” - but any synergies willbe initially in back office areassuch as finance, HR and IT. Peregrine ceo Glenyce Johnsonsaid she was thrilled at the move. “These are really excitingtimes,” she told TD this morning. Darrell Wade said the move “willfirmly position PEAK Adventuresas the sector’s global leader. “In addition to providing a one-stop-shop for adventureexperiences, the creation of anindependently managed companyoffers enormous potential tointroduce new products for agentsto sell,” he said.

DFAT lowers Egypt advice EGYPT wholesalers arebreathing a sigh of relief after theDepartment of Foreign Affairs andTrade this morning lowered theoverall level of its Smartravelleradvisory for Egypt to ‘Reconsideryour need to travel’. The updated advisory warnsthat the security situation inEgypt “remains unsettled,” andthat demonstrations could occurat any time. The move follows a limiteddowngrading of the Egypt advicefrom the UK Foreign Office (TD

yesterday) which has seen anumber of charter operatorsresume services to Luxor. Cox and Kings ceo SteveReynolds, who hosted an Egypt-themed event in Melbourneearlier this week (TD Wed),welcomed the move, saying hewas hopeful normal services couldresume from 15 Mar. “We see this as putting the onusback onto the traveller, which wesee as a very encouragingdevelopment”. Mike Kirkland, the chairman ofBench International, congratulatedDFAT on its prompt action tolower the Egypt advisory, sayinghe hoped that the dept “mightreflect a similar attitude whenaddressing the levels of advisoriesin other parts of the world.”

MEL traffic growthoutstrips SYD INTERNATIONAL passengernumbers at Melbourne airportsoared 18% in Jan to 631,000,surging past 600,000 for the firsttime ever. The strong performancecontrasted with a 4% increase ininternational passengers at SydneyAirport, which still handledalmost twice as many as MEL withan overall 1.14 million. Melbourne domestic traffic alsoshowed a strong recovery, up 8%to 1.84 million - not far behindSydney which had a 4.4% increaseto 1.98 million for the month. Both airports showed stronggrowth from China, with Sydneyup a staggering 66% for Jan due tothe significant capacity increasesfrom Chinese carriers, the AmwayChina conference in Sydney andtravel in the lead-up to ChineseNew Year. Melbourne’s Chinese numberswere up 33% for the month, whilethe Victorian capital’s figureswere also boosted by events suchas the Australian Open Tennis.

THERE’S a frenzy of anticipationaround the world in the lead-upto Sat 02 Apr - officially known asWorld Pillow Fight Day. And Australia will certainly beon the pillow fighting map, withMelbourne being one of the 40global cities staging events. A special website provides fullinstructions for organisers, with alist of rules (soft pillows only, remove glasses, swing lightly)and special tips such as ‘NeverAsk Permission’. “Any city worth living in has atleast an annual pillow fight,” thesite says, urging more to join. “Organising a massive pillowfight is perhaps the simplest offree events...but also one of themost rewarding,” it adds. See www.pillowfightday.com.

IT probably seemed like a goodidea at the time. The MGM Grand Hotel in LasVegas has rapidly reversed a newpolicy which saw guests forced topay US$20 to guarantee a non-smoking room. It was one of a number of newoptions on the hotel’s websitewhich also included optional feesfor early or late check-out or toguarantee a room with a view. The non-smoking fee attractedimmediate outrage from anti-tobacco groups, with onecommentator asking “What willthey think of next - pay toilets?” An MGM spokesman said thehotel operator was planning toinstead charge smokers toguarantee a smoking room.
