1.4.5.5 Purifier Film Killers Contingency
Technical Contingency: 10% (New design, development of new technology which advances state-of–
the-art) Weight: 4 (Design or manufacturing) Weighted Contingency: 40%
Cost Contingency: 10% (Top-down estimate from analogous program) Weight: 2 (Material cost and labor rate) Weighted Contingency: 20%
Schedule Contingency: 4% (Delays completion of non-critical path subsystem item)
Total Contingency: 64%
Risk A number of methods have been proposed to stop superfluid film flow in order to
reduce contamination of the absorption pump. The choice of which method to pursue will require R&D and may involve unanticipated design constraints and delays. If initial design concepts do not work out, then additional time will be required to develop alternatives.
Risk Likelihood of Occurrence: Likely (= >50%) Risk Consequence/Impact: Significant (Significant technical degradation – could affect
heat load, 4He purity, time between regeneration – which affects measurement efficiency)
Overall Risk Rating: Medium risk

Contingency Technical
Contingency: 10% (New design, development of new technology which advances state-of–the-art)
Weight: 4 (Design or manufacturing) Weighted Contingency: 40%
Cost Contingency: 15% (Engineering judgment) Weight: 2 (Material cost and labor rate) Weighted Contingency: 30%
Schedule Contingency: 4% (Delays completion of non-critical path subsystem item)
Total Contingency: 74%
Risk The concept for the actuator involves a pneumatic system with helium as the
working fluid for the transmission of force from 300K to 4K. If that initial design concept does not work out, then additional time will be required to develop an alternative
Risk Likelihood of Occurrence: Likely (= >50%) Risk Consequence/Impact: Significant (Significant technical degradation –
could affect valve cycles, cell polarization) Overall Risk Rating: Medium risk
