October in Edmond Is All About ConnectingBy Sherri Hultner
Welcome to this month’s Around Edmond! While I normally
withhold personal opinions and observances of our beautiful
community for our online weekly column, Around Edmond, I
feel compelled to do so here this month.
This summer provided for unexpected occurrences within
our own family which required our direct attention. With our
youngest son, who is 16 ½, it required that we examine our
relationship with him, well past the surface relationship and
really look at ourselves as his mentors and what role we may
have had with regard to his taking a step in the wrong direction.
As parents of teenagers, there is always the question you have
in the back of your mind, when a teen makes a wrong choice,
as to whether you could have had any influence in the making
of a correct choice. And as a parent, we teach our kids to make
the right choices, and tell them that at any time they can come
to us and talk it out. This month Jeff Taylor talks about what
we teach our kids about what is important to us daily, and this
really struck a chord with me as a parent.
As well, this week a young man who attended Stillwater
Junior High School took his own life as the school day was
about to start. Without placing blame on anyone, whether it
was because of bullying, depression, etc., this event, along
with our son’s misstep in choices, really forced us, personally,
to take a look at what we consider what it means to really
be connected. Is it constant social media presence? Does
having superficial contact via networking mean you are truly
connected? Does superficial acknowledgement mean you are
truly connected?
We all should really think about these factors in all of our
connections and make more of an effort to really be present
for everything we do and for everyone in our lives. Sure it’s
a lot easier to just say we are connected, but the difference
between superficial connection and real connection is one that
may actually make a difference to one person. One person is
enough for us.
If you are new to Edmond, please take the time to head
out to any one of the many family activities our town has
planned, and take the time to stop in to any one of the events
our awesome locally owned businesses have planned and say
hi to them. They are meant to create a connection between
us all and are amazing fun. We have spent 4 years getting to
know all of the business owners and attending city events and
can personally say they are all presented to us in the spirit of
giving back to us as residents and giving us all a chance to
personally connect.
Until the November issue, remember to truly connect. With
your kids, a local business owner, an old friend or even a
stranger. In doing so, the result could be tremendous.

I’ve been thinking back lately on my duties and
obligations as a father. I have a good example of a dad I
believe gave his all to place my needs, wants, and desires
at the forefront. In these later years, we’ve developed a
relationship where we are equals, and not strictly parent-
child.
I have fond memories as a child of fishing, camping, and
family road trips that seemed to last forever, but delivered
us to amazing spaces. I want those types of relationships
for my family, especially while my children are young.
I believe that no other success can compensate for one’s
failure in the home. Regardless of social, economic, or
business prestige, the moment that my kids no longer look
to me with awed fascination and cheer, is the moment I’ve
dropped the cliché ball.
So, as this year comes to a close, I’ve decided to identify
and try to eliminate the interferences that take me away from
the attention of my family. Things we take for “necessity,”
but because of their semi-addictive nature, cause us to lose
track of time, space and events.
One of the biggest shocks of late came one afternoon
as my five year-old son walked into the living room with
something in his hand. We were preparing to leave on a
short family block walk. He stretched out his arm and stated
simply, “don’t forget your phone dad.”
Although it was an innocent event, and hardly something
to worry and fret over, I quickly realized what things my
family knows I value. I embarrassingly declined the phone,
but I could not, without mournful dejection, ignore the
event.
With technology, television, and the internet, we often
find many opportunities to ignore the special moments
and favor our own guilty pleasures. Instead of making the
right memories with our children, we’re convincing them,
through our actions, what is important.
My memories came because my parents actively
participated in my life, not because they “Tweeted,” “liked,”
or “DVRed” the event. I think my parents exhibited three
key components to developing my childhood memories:
1. Listen
2. Participate
3. Show true caring and concern.
If we actively listen to our children’s conversations, and
participate in their “menial” activities, we’ll easily develop
and show our caring and concern.
If you haven’t done so, take an opportunity to evaluate
your personal commitments and those “necessities” that
remove you from your true necessity.

Arcadian Inn Famous Maple Walnut Cookies
Recipe by Martha Swenson Hall Arcadian Inn1 cup butter-flavored Crisco1 cup sugar½ Cup brown sugar2 eggs1 tsp. vanilla1 tbsp. maple flavoring4 tbsp flour1 tsp. salt1 tsp. soda2 cups flour1½ cup chopped English Walnuts
Cream together the Crisco, sugars, eggs, vanilla and maple flavoring. Add 4 tbsp. flour, salt and soda. Fold in 2 cups flour and walnuts. Drop by teaspoons on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes.
These are our signature cookies that we keep the cookie jar filled with. Hurshel keeps them on hand in the freezer to bake up fresh for our guests.

Bedlam Margarita’sRecipe By Vance Gregory / Edmond Wine Shop
2 parts mix (I like Pepper Creek Farms, Margaritaville or Jose Cuervo Margarita
Mix)1 part 100% Agave Tequila1/2 part Cointreaujuice of 1/2 lime (more if you want it less sweet)Sugared glass rim (optional)Blackberries & Sugar (OSU)1 oz. Pom Juice & Raspberries (OU)
If you like salt on the rim, rub glass rim with piece of lime, then invert into margarita salt.
Use a shaker or pitcher to mix all ingredients, then shake or stir well with plenty of ice.
Proportions are not set in stone....you can make yours more or less strong, and more or less sweet. Using more Cointreau gives it more orange flavor and sweetens it up a bit. Triple Sec is a substitute for Cointreau, but the original recipe used Cointreau, which has more orange flavor. I don’t recommend Grand Marnier because it has Cognac in it which covers up the flavor of good Tequila.
Always use 100% Agave tequila. That’s all that’s sold in Mexico. If it isn’t 100% agave, it must still be at least 51% agave-based, but it hasn’t the character of real Tequila.

When we sat down with Edmond resident Ashley Sellers, owner of the Bones and Arrows pop up vintage shop, we asked her what she loved about bringing vintage items to residents and she said, “One reason I love thrifting is because a lot of older stuff is made in the USA.” We have seen her stock and she carries what was and still is top of the line merchandise.
Pop up shops became enormously popular this year in NYC during the Spring Fashion Week and almost every national retailer had one. In Oklahoma, however, Ashley told us she is only the 2nd one in existence.
The items that Bones and Arrows will be carrying consist of vintage stock of kitchen wares such as vintage Pyrex, vintage attire such as Pendelton, vintage shoes, her stock will always be changing. Welcome to the Orr Family Farm for this month’s Field Trip! We picked this farm in Oklahoma City at 14400 S. Western Ave., because of it’s ambiance and the fact that it’s a real working farm! The Orr Family started the Orr Family Farm 8 years ago as an entertainment center highlighting events from the opening of Spring Break to the day before Christmas.

Edmond Memorial Bulldogs:
Turning The Corner
A lot of factors have to come into play to make a successful high school football team. First, there has to be a talent pool to pull from. And in high school that pool is ever changing. The schools are at the mercy of the way each district is drawn.
Coaching is also extremely important. The coaches need to be able to recognize talent and have the ability to bring it out of their players.
Another factor is teamwork; all the working parts of a team have to work together. In a lot of cases the players have played together for a long time

through Pee Wee and Jr. High football. And that goes a long way in how the players mesh to together and work as a team. Pride in their school and respect for one another also plays into the ability to work as a team.
Currently at 1-5 in regular season play, Edmond Memorial just might be on the downside of the ebb and flow of the talent pool. That’s not to say that Memorial doesn’t have talented players this year, because they do. And with the weapons they do have, there’s no reason they can’t win some more games as the season rolls on.
Their first win came in week six against Mustang, who came into that game at 3-2. Memorial crushed them 41-13 with nearly half their points coming in the first quarter. That win speaks volumes for the Bulldogs as they have been on the losing side of the column with similar scores all season. They’ve obviously had enough of losing and just might have turned a corner. The win proved that the Bulldogs have the tools to get the job done against a team perceived to be above them.
Memorial’s schedule thus far has
been one of the toughest of all the Edmond schools. They have already faced Edmond North (44-0 shutout), Enid (19-14 loss), Deer Creek (45-14 loss), Lawton (34-9 loss) and Norman (45-14 loss) before beating Mustang. Edmond North, Lawton and Norman are all 6A top 10 ranked teams this year and Deer Creek is a top 5A team.
Moving forward, Memorial will face 1-5 Choctaw in week 7. By all indications, the Bulldogs should be able to take down Choctaw if they play like they did against Mustang. After that Memorial will face their toughest challenges of the season. In week 8 they play top 10 ranked Southmoore, followed by crosstown rivals Santa Fe in week 9. Santa Fe is also in the top 10. Beating either of those teams would make a huge statement.
While a playoff birth might be out of the picture for this year, the Bulldogs do have a few opportunities to upset some formidable opponents. They just have to believe they can do it.

It’s only a matter of time before the Deer Creek Antlers are moved up to 6A. So it only makes sense that the Antlers start testing the water in 6A. In the preseason they played a scrimmage against Putnam City West. They used that game as a build-up towards their regular season game with Edmond Memorial. Moving to 6A would also put the Antlers in the Edlam mix.
In their game with Memorial the Antlers dominated on both sides of the ball and showed that they can hang with a 6A program. The Antlers beat the Bulldog’s 45-14.
In the past couple years the Antlers have grown into a very impressive team. This year they are 6-0, so far, and ranked in the top 5 in 5A and look to go deep into the playoff’s. Their biggest test will come in week 8 when they face defending 5A State Champs, Guthrie. Guthrie is also 6-0 at this point in the season.
The Deer Creek offense is
very impressive. With Joel Blumenthal leading the squad at Quaterback, the Antlers have a big passing game. Recivers Alec James and Kale Jackson are two effective weapons in the arsenal. And on the ground they have Brennan Miyake at Runningback. He racked up a thousand yards last season and he’s piling up the yards this season as well.
Deer Creek is just as impressive on the other side of the ball.Their defense has only allowed 52 points this season and they are currently ranked second in 5A State compatition for defense. On average that’s only 8.6 points pergame they have
given away.If Deer creek can keep up
there momentum for the rest of the season they will be a serious contender for 5A State. And if their coaches can maintain their level of play, the Deer Creek Antlers will be a force to be reckoned with when they finally do make the jump to 6A.

Edmond Santa Fe Wolves:
On The Offensive
There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Edmond Santa Fe’s football team is oozing with talent. Their Quarterback, Justice Hansen, is one of the top high school QB’s in the state with offers from a number of top D1 schools. He recently made an official visit to Florida State University during their big game with Clemson. Of all the players in Edmond, Hansen is definitely the most talked about and touted. And he’s only a Junior.
Khari Harding is another player on the Santa Fe roster with multiple offers from D1 schools. As an all purpose player Khari does double duty as a wide receiver and a defensive back. The same goes for Trevan Smith and Kaden Mendenhall. All three are quality players and a big part of the Santa Fe arsenal. With their contributions, Santa Fe has one of the best offenses in 6A, if not the best. The only problem with Santa Fe is their defense.
Most of Santa Fe’s games this season have been high scoring shootouts. Their defense hasn’t been as effective as it should be and they have allowed

an average of 28 points a game. The Wolves have the talent to go very deep into the playoff’s, maybe even all the way to the finals, but if there is one thing that would keep them from winning State it’s defense.
The one thing we’ve seen the Wolves do during the season is improve. As the games roll on, Santa Fe gets better and better. The loss the suffered to Edmond North early on -- Their only loss this season -- might not be a loss if they played them today.
The next two games for Santa Fe, in weeks 7 & 8, against
Lawton and Norman will be their two toughest matches left on the schedule. Lawton is a top 10, 6A team, but they recently lost to Southmoore. Santa Fe beat Southmoore early in their schedule. So, Santa Fe should be able to handle them. And if they can get past Norman unscathed, the rest of their schedule should be clear sailing until the playoff’s.
If Santa Fe can improve their defense in that time they have a real chance of going all the way this year. Only time will tell. Tulsa Union and Jenks have already shown kinks in their armor, so this may be the year a west side team takes it all.

Edmond North Huskies:
Can They Go All The Way?
The 2012-13 season just might turn out to be the best season in Edmond North’s history. I know that is a pretty lofty statement right there, but this years team is one of the most balanced in 6A. And as of week 6 they are undefeated in regular season play.
By pure stats alone, the Huskies have the number 3 offense and number 3 defense in 6A. Their defense has only given up 81 points in 6 games (that’s an average of 13.5 per game). And the offense has racked up 244 points on the season (averaging 40.6 points per game). However, a case could be made for the fact that North doesn’t have the toughest schedule
this season. The best team they’ve played thus far would have to be Santa Fe. Regardless, the stars have aligned over the North football program this year.
One of the keys to the Huskies success has been the D-Line made up of the Dixon triplets. Andrew, Joel and Lance Dixon have been key players for the Huskies defense. At least one of the three brothers has played a role in almost every defensive play for the Huskies.
On the offense side of the ball the Huskies have a lot of play makers as well. The have a solid running game with Michael Farmer and Quarterback

Luke Hoskins has a host of receivers that he can go to. There are definitely plenty of options at the Huskies disposal.
The big question regarding the Huskies is, can they go all the way this season? Last season they missed out on going to the 6A finals by a one point loss to the eventual State Champs, Tulsa Union. Last seasons team was much like this years. They had the same cohesion and a killer defense. So, yeah, they can go all the way. Both North and Santa Fe made it to the second round in the playoff’s last year and both teams are equally good this year. There’s no reason they can’t do it again this year with a better outcome. How’s this for a crazy scenario? What if both teams make it past the juggernaut of Union & Jenks in the playoff’s and have to face each other in the finals? Would that be insane, or what?

UCO Broncho’s:
A Work In ProgressThere have been a lot of expectations
placed on UCO’s new football coach, Nick Bobeck. He came into the UCO program with a lot of enthusiasm and made a lot of changes. He brought with him, from Navarro JC in Texas, a new philosophy and a few of his key players. While at Navarro, Bobeck accumulated a 45-5 record and his team won the JC National Championship in 2010. Plus he’s an alumni of UCO.
Coming to UCO, Bobeck inherited a team with a 2-9 record from the previous season, while playing as an independent of any conference. While this isn’t Bobeck’s team yet, he has a pretty good base to work with. It will become his team once he has a chance recruit his own players. For now, he will have to work with what he has. That’s not to say the team doesn’t have any talent; there are definitely some
bright spots in the Broncho lineup.This is the first year UCO has played
in the MIAA conference. The MIAA is one of the toughest conferences in Division 2 football. It includes a number of top 10 Nationally ranked teams as well as the defending National Champions, Pittsburg State.
So far, the UCO Broncho’s have had their share of ups and downs...although it’s been more downs than ups. But you have to consider the first half of their season was the toughest part of their schedule and they did show some signs of brilliance.
The highlight of the season so far was the Broncho’s 35-20 win at home against #9 ranked Washburn. It was a huge upset and it showed what the broncho’s are capable of. In spite of their current 1-5 record, the Broncho’s should finish the season strong, if they play to their potential.
