Early Years
Dulac lived from 1882-1953.
He was born South France, in the city of Toulouse. Dulac first studied law while he was taking classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Toulouse. Two years later he forgo law school to enroll in art full time.
1904 at the age of 22 his career took off. His first commission was illustrating Jane Eyre .
Golden Age of Illustration 1880’s-1920s
Golden Age: unmatched work in magazine and book illustrations.
Edmund Dulac was one of the leading artists in the Golden age of Illustration.
At the time of the Golden Age, modern technology refined printing techniques or the “color separation process. “ Illustrators no longer had to outline their work in ink, to cover up miss-registration lines. Instead the images could be printed with extreme accuracy and quality.
Dulac’s Work
Edmund Dulac is best known for his illustrations in Arabian Nights, and Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a book of poetry.
His work reflects the style of Art Nouveau.
