Lateral ThinkingTheory Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel Prize WinnerIntroductionBorn 1872 in Austria, Automobile and Aircraft designer-GermanyAfter Engineering- Joined Dailmer as Car designer -1898- Joined Adler as Technical director of car company 1902- Designed first car where engine and gearbox were mounted together as a unitAfter invention of Aircraft by Wright Bros Rumpler left Adler in 1907 and in 1910 Rumpler became the first aircraft manufacturer in GermanyThe Product of Wartime Aviation ExperienceHis passion for Automobiles continued and after WW1 he returned back to car manufacture. The cars produced then were inefficiently designed with- High drag and wind noise- High noise emission- undesirable lift forces causing vehicle instabilityHe applied aircraft streamlining to a carThe result was the Tropfenwagen, released at the 1921 Berlin Auto Show. The Tropfenwagen (German for drop car as in a water drop) had the extraordinary low drag co-efficient of 0.28The windscreen and side windows were formed from glass panels curved in a single plane

Birth of new Design

MudguardFrontal AreaHeadlightWindshieldTear Drop Engine Placement-Mudguards, instead of being curved to match the wheels, were straight and mounted horizontally, giving a very small frontal area.-The most radical aerodynamic innovation was the tear drop plan-view shape. The boat-tailing was so extreme that the body work reduced in width to form a trailing vertical edge, where the exhaust pipe was placed.-An engine-driven fan pushed air through the rear-mounted radiator.
