Product: Edgenuity Career and Technical Education

A vital part of education today is preparing students for life beyond graduation. High schools are expected to

change the type of education available to students, but often times do not have the resources they need to equip

students with the knowledge and skills needed to determine career interests or prepare for today’s careers.

Edgenuity’s full suite of career and technical education (CTE) courses provide a way for schools to offer courses

and programs that would not otherwise be available, enabling middle-school and high-school students to explore

exciting careers through online and blended learning.

Our philosophy of engaging, interactive courses is embedded throughout the CTE curriculum. Through interactive

tasks, vocabulary-building tools and engaging assignments, students explore, plan and train for the jobs of

tomorrow. Developed with industry experts, the courses offer students essential instruction in the fastest-growing

industries and jobs.

The CTE courses:

Provide digital content for anytime, anywhere learning

Help schools and districts offer programs in a blended learning environment

Allow students to progress at their own pace

Appeal to “digital native” students via engaging, hands-on educational models

the real world by complementing their education with CTE opportunities in career electives that help students

explore a variety of careers, and career pathways that allow students to focus on a particular career of interest.

Career Electives

Aligned to iNACOL standards, the career elective courses provide students with an engaging introduction to

careers and the world of work. Understanding that students “learn by doing,” Edgenuity coupled hands-on

projects with interactive tools to help students identify and explore their interests and skills. The curriculum helps

students develop everything from pre-employment skills and a career plan to technical skills and financial literacy.

The courses require students to interact with content and ideas in order to summarize, clarify understanding,

explain concepts, elaborate, and/or synthesize information.

Course features include:

• Lessons contain video instruction and unit introductions and summaries by highly qualified teachers who

are field experts.

• As students work independently, each lesson contains instructor audio to guide student understanding.

• To promote inquiry and a focus on big ideas, every lesson includes a guiding lesson question that is

aligned to each lesson’s objectives.

• Interactive tasks are present throughout each lesson, and also serve as formative assessments. These

tasks give students the opportunity to check their understanding and provide immediate feedback to help

clarify understanding.

• Cumulative assignments at the end of each lesson provide students with the opportunity to relate the

information they have learned to the major lesson objectives.

• Vocabulary support is provided throughout the course to help students comprehend common acronyms,

terms, and phrases.

The following is a sample of the many ways that students interact with the curriculum as they progress through

the CTE courses.

Course and Unit Introductions

A highly qualified teacher introduces courses and units by explaining the major concepts and making real-world

connections in engaging instructional videos.

Warm-up

Each lesson begins with a warm-up activity that provokes student thinking and orients students toward the central

concepts at the heart of the lesson. The warm-up activity presents the guiding question for the lesson, the lesson

goals, key vocabulary, and a brief description of how students will answer the lesson question as they meet the

goals for the lesson.

Page 8: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Edgenuity Career and Technical Education User Guide (continued)

The warm-up is often accompanied by a short check for understanding to help students explore the new topic or

concept on their own for a deeper understanding and connection with prior knowledge.

Instruction

The courses are organized into manageable segments so students work at a pace just right for them, reviewing

lesson content as needed.

A highly qualified, certified teacher provides direct instruction, explains concepts, models strategies, and makes

real-world connections in engaging instructional videos.

Page 9: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Edgenuity Career and Technical Education User Guide (continued)

The course utilizes a variety of instructional strategies in the lessons, including the following:

Inquiry

Scaffolding

Real-world scenarios

Comparing and Contrasting

Key words for enhancing subject-specific vocabulary

Academic and domain-specific vocabulary is emphasized and studied in every lesson.

Instruction is engaging for students, employing visual graphic organizers, maps, charts, and photos to support

understanding of complex ideas and concepts. Through a mixture of these presentations and accessible tasks,

students learn new concepts and meet lesson objectives. Students can stop the lesson at any time to reflect and

record information in their eNotes, a built-in note-taking tool available throughout instruction. This tool scaffolds

the note-taking process for students, helping them to pull out the important parts of the lesson and enter them into

their notes. Students can print their notes and use them to complete assignments and study for exams. The

course glossary and lesson transcripts are also available to aid in comprehension and note-taking where

necessary.

Edgenuity Career and Technical Education User Guide (continued)

Reflection questions throughout instruction help students focus on big ideas. Lesson questions provide immediate

feedback, highlight key concepts, and help students develop their critical thinking skills. Throughout, students

interact with multimedia stimuli, including maps, charts, graphs, photographs, and videos.

Summary

The lessons include a summary after instruction to help students to remain focused on the objectives for the

lesson by highlighting the major concepts students will practice in the assignments and review.

Assignment

Assignments ensure students master key concepts and develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. They

include various activities that further the learning objectives and complement the instruction by supplying

additional points of view, contexts, examples, principles, and problem-solving approaches. In addition, students

may complete interactive activities that allow them to investigate topics in greater depth. Students also access

supplemental readings such as best-in-class online resources that provide additional perspectives on the topics

covered in the lesson.

In the assignment, students may complete the following activities:

Practice what they have learned through one or more tasks or focused activities

Read and analyze texts

Write a response to a prompt

Explore a topic to extend their learning and enhance their understanding

Create a product to demonstrate research skills and mastery of content learning, such as a multimedia

presentation, brochure, or poster

Checks for Understanding

Interspersed throughout each lesson, students reflect on what they learn for deeper understanding in short

checks for understanding.

Interactive Practice

Interactives and tools allow students to practice what they learn, helping them apply concepts and skills in

different ways.

Page 12: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Open-Ended Response

Throughout each course, students are required to express their knowledge and skills in open-ended prompts

presented to assess comprehension of lesson content or supplemental reading. In the following example,

students practice their skills in understanding shorthand used in a prescription.

Real-World Scenarios

Students apply their knowledge and skills to the analysis of real-world scenarios in each unit.

Performance Task

Students demonstrate understanding by applying what they have learned to performance tasks involving real-

world scenarios. In the example below, students create a budget that includes calculating their income and

managing their overall expenses. First they analyze the components of a budget, then they calculate monthly

expenses, and then they use an online family budget estimator to calculate monthly expenses.

Page 13: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Edgenuity Career and Technical Education User Guide (continued)

Independent Reading

Students extend learning by linking to extended reading assignments that help them to further explore major

concepts and new perspectives, and apply new information to real world scenarios.

When students access supplemental readings using the course’s translation and read aloud tool, they can

highlight text, insert sticky notes, and take notes as they read. As students read they can click on key words and

phrases to get the definition and/or teacher’s notes to guide comprehension and analysis.

The text is accompanied by a short application activity to deepen understanding.

Projects

Students create original products, such as multimedia presentations, self-assessments, projects, and hands-on

assignments, to demonstrate research skills and mastery of content learning. Students complete project-based

lessons that allow them to apply what they have leaned.

Below is an example of a multimedia presentation that requires students to research and express their knowledge

of the role of pharmacy technicians in a hospital environment.

Page 14: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Unit Wrap-Up

Each unit ends with a summary. The on-screen teacher reviews the guiding questions for each lesson and the

major concepts to help students prepare for the unit exam.

Assessment

Formative and summative assessments test for mastery and provide immediate, actionable feedback for students

and teachers.

Teachers can modify assessments to give students more time, change the passing thresholds, allow for additional

retakes, or adjust grade weights.

Assessment questions represent an even distribution along the full spectrum of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy and

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge. Students are assessed at the end of each lesson, unit, and semester in the

following formats:

Page 15: EdTech Digest Awards - Edgenuity Inc.ccdn.edgenuity.com/wp/common/pdf/Edgenuity-Career... · incorporates best practices, including iNACOL instructional and teaching and learning

Edgenuity Career and Technical Education User Guide (continued)

Quiz

At the end of each lesson, students take a ten-question quiz. Each quiz assesses the learning objectives of that

lesson.

Unit Test

Students also take summative exams at the end of each unit. These tests allow students to demonstrate their

mastery of concepts before moving forward. Prior to the exam, students complete a full review of the key

concepts contained in the unit and can return to lessons for practice where necessary. The multiple-choice format

of the exam allows students to reinforce and relate to foundational concepts and to receive immediate feedback

about which lesson content they may need to revisit for greater comprehension.

Cumulative Exam

Students take a cumulative exam midway through the course, and another at the end of the course. The exam

consists of multiple-choice questions that build on main ideas and key concepts that are presented throughout

every unit. These provide students with an opportunity to exhibit mastery and long-term comprehension of themes

within the study of English language arts.

Student Tools and Supports

Students log in to their student lobby which includes a course list, course map, communication tools, organizers,

and resources. Before students begin they watch an introductory tutorial that familiarizes them with the features

and tools available through the student portal. The video and additional user resources are available for students

to reference at any time in the student organizer section of the student portal.

The My Course Info shows the students whether they are on target, behind schedule, or ahead of schedule for

course completion. It also graphically depicts students’ performance and course completion progress and reminds

the student of any pending assignments that must be completed before moving forward in the course. If students

feel they do not fully understand a concept, they can search the lesson database on this page to find additional

activities for supplemental practice.

Courses: View course structures and activities, and access standards alignments. From the Manage Courses page, you can customize a course, assign it to a group of students, view all students already enrolled, and create a course exam with just a few clicks.

Reports: View and export data on student engagement, progress, and achievement. This menu also includes a one-stop dashboard report that shows teachers which students need their help and allows them to take action immediately.

Communication: Access Edgenuity’s in-system email, chat, and announcements features. Also, set up and monitor discussions in the Collaboration Corner—Edgenuity’s built-in online discussion board.

Administration: District, school, and program administrators can add and manage teacher accounts, customize the district calendar and manage schedules, and control district settings.

Support: From here, get connected to asynchronous training materials in the eCommunity. Or, use the links here to email Edgenuity’s dedicated customer support team—also available by phone.

Managing Students

From the Students tab, access the Manage Students page to manage student courses. Select a student first to view the student’s course list.

Add Course: Enrolls selected student in courses.

Disable: Prevents a student from working in the course that is disabled. The student can log in to the Virtual Classroom and work on all courses except the disabled course. Disabled courses can be re-enabled at a future date.

Complete: Marks the selected course as complete when the student has completed all activities and the teacher does not want the student to re-enter the course.

Customize: Enables administrators to customize courses for mass distribution or allows teachers to customize a course for an individual student.

Edit Options: Allows features within a course to be individualized for the student. Some of the individual features include passing-score thresholds, grade weights, start date, target date, quiz review method, grading methods, time limits and fail attempts for assessments, pre-test mode, etc.

Retakes: Allows educators to manage retakes for quizzes, tests, and exams.

Grades: Provides a list of all completed activities within a course and the selected student’s grades on each activity. Also provides educators with the ability to change grades, reset assignments, bypass activities, assign additional retakes for assessments, etc.

Undo Bypass: A Bypass allows the teacher to advance a student through activities without requiring the student to complete the activity in his or her sequential learning path. This can be performed from the student’s gradebook. The Undo Bypass feature provides the ability to remove the Bypass from an activity.

Scores and Activity Review: Allows educators to view student work and leave feedback for all activities students have submitted. A search feature enables users to find assessment data on specific activity types.

Insert Supplemental Activity: Inserts activities from other Edgenuity courses into individual student courses for remediation or enrichment. When supplemental activities are inserted, students must complete the supplemental activities successfully before they can return to the assigned course sequence.

Additional Activities: These are assignments that a student does outside of the Virtual Classroom that will be factored into the student’s grade for the course (presuming that the grade weight for the additional category is greater than zero).

View Course Standards: Provides access to the state standards correlations for a selected course.

Assignment Calendar: Generates a weekly assignment calendar for the student based on the start and target dates of the course.

Diagnostic Test: Allows educators to manage diagnostic testing for Virtual Tutor test preparation courses.

eNotes: Allows teachers to review eNotes that students have taken.
