What teachers do:
• We read, make notes, PPTs
• We design the course (lecture material, exercises,
assignments…)
• We lecture and assess learning
• We teach science, maths……
• We evaluate assignments, tests, exams (and feel
upset)
![Page 5: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What students do:
• Relax/play/procrastinate through the
semester
• Cram overnight for the exams
• Clear ROM immediately after exams
• Believe that is how LIFE works
![Page 6: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Why students do not like classes:• Some are gapped out• Some have read the text !• It is too monotonous• It is compulsory !• Switch – over is too rapid• It is too theoretical • It is not meant for me• It is passive• It is too slow or fast • The teacher is unprepared
![Page 7: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Why teachers do not likes classes:
• The students come unprepared

![Page 8: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Outcome:
• You do your job, I will do mine
• I don’t care, neither do you
• It is not my responsibility
• Let us get over it…… somehow
• Complete the syllabus
![Page 9: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Let us make learning enjoyable:
• Understand the benefits
• Understand each other
• Involve the students
• Understand their level of knowledge, limitations and plan
accordingly
• Search/Identify appropriate materials
• Plan your session
• Teach students (not english, science, maths)
![Page 10: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Involving the students:
• Become a co-learner
• Give them space to speak-up
• Listen intently
• Respect disagreements
• Question the obvious
• Believe in them
• Make pre-reading a must
![Page 11: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Make the classes interesting:
• Tie theory to practice
• Take examples from the students’ context
• Allow laughter
• Use humor judiciously
• Be firm and respectful
• Be patient
• Treat every student as your biological child
![Page 12: EDUCARNIVAL 2014- Presentation on Bridging the gaps by Professor Harish Chaudhry](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032620/55cc1486bb61eb193b8b4623/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Use assessments effectively:
• Assess regularly
• Give group assignments
• Do not tie all assessments to grades
• Take feedback on content, learning, self
• Share feedback on self
• Share your vulnerability
