Campus News Emmanuel Students Participate in the City-Year Serve-a-thon

By Sr. Patricia McSharry, SND, Director of Campus Ministry

On Saturday morning, October 28, 47 Emmanuel students crawled out of their beds to meet in St. Joseph's Foyer at 6:45 am. Their mission that day was to join with over 3000 other volunteers to give service to numerous churches, schools and social services agencies throughout the City of Boston. These students, under the direction of Rebecca Gallo, Coordinator of Community Service in the Campus Ministry Office, are continuing the long-standing Emmanuel tradition of service to the wider community.

The Emmanuel students provided service to three sites: The Strand Theater and Pilgrim Church in Upham's Corner, Dorchester, and to the Neighborhood Development Corporation of Jamaica Plain. In each of these places, they provided physical labor to clean up, spruce up and do the overall fall cleaning.

Upon returning from service, a pasta dinner and reflection period followed in St. Joseph's Foyer, lead by

Sr. Pat McSharry. Daniella Picariello '04, commented, "They put us

right into the community, and the people from the community were working right beside us - seeing that you are making a difference and seeing the little children's eagerness to help, saying things like "oh - I'm going to water the plants." We really got with the people and really got to see their appreciation. It was their excitement - a spark in them to realize that they can do something to better their lives."

Katie Foley, '04, says, "I'm a freshman so I didn't know anything about the Serve-A-Thon. Some of my friends did it last year and said it was really fun, and I like doing community service, so that's why I went. I was at the Strand Theater. I didn't even know about the place until they showed us a video about what they do and how they don't have a lot of funding, and they rely on volunteer work. They have a lot of programs there

and they need people to help them. It felt good to help them. "

Recognition and certificates of appreciation were distributed to Project Coordinators: Jenny McIsaac '02, Bobbie Kumangai '02, and Heather Hissong '02, and Team Captains Danielle Tice '03 , Danielle Dias '03, Stephanie Barney '03, Catherine Hahesy '02, Rouba Youssef '02, Tanya Brennan '04, Daniella Picariello '04, Rachel Zaitz '02, and Maryann Ziemba '03 .

We want to thank all those who helped to make this a successful venture including Bon Appetit who provided the meal, Barnes and Nobles who provided a $25 gift certificate and an Emmanuel sweatshirt, Minahan Companies who provided a generous monetary donation, and all others who made donations.

the Community

Sixteen members of Emmanuel's faculty and administration were inducted as Eucharistic Ministers at the October 19th Memorial Mass. These generous members of the college community devote time each week to visiting patients at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center and offering them the Holy Eucharist. Now in its third year, this successful volunteer program is sponsored by the Campus Ministry and Counseling Offices. Emmanuel's team of Eucharistic Ministers visits hundreds of patients who are grateful for the opportunity to receive the sacrament during their stay in the hospital. Kip' Tiernan Addresses College at Second Annual Lecture

Kip Tiernan, of Poor People's United Fund and Founder of Rosie's Place, was the guest lecturer at the sec'ond annual Sister Marie Augusta Neal, SND, Lecture at Emmanuel College on Friday, November 3, 2000. During a lecture entitled "The Lonely Passion of Prophetic

the suffering, but we must also help to eliminate the causes of suffering. "

During her lecture Kip Tiernan praised the courageous career of Sister Marie Augusta Neal in her fight for the poor and the oppressed. Sister Marie Augusta Neal is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Emmanuel College. Kip Tiernan also cited the courageous lives of several other women in ministry, comparing their calling and struggle for equality and justice to the life of Jesus Christ. She concluded that "this fierce and lonely passionate journey we have selected will have a short shelf life if we do not constantly remember and act upon what we have been taught by our teachers, like Sister Marie."

J ourneys--Women in Ministry," Kip Tiernan, a wellrespected activist for social justice in the Boston community, acknowledged the central role of Sister Marie Augusta Neal in awakening her own call to social action. She recalled a night in 1978, four years after she began Rosie's Place to aid the homeless, "when truth became a clarion call" during a lecture by Sister Marie. Tiernan said that" it was like being hit by a lightening bolt" when Sister Marie exclaimed "yes of course, we must alleviate

Off The Wall: Painted Constructions An Exhibit by Mary Sherman Opens in the Lillian Immig Gallery

"Off the Wall'; Mary Sherman

Starting in mid November, Mary Sherman will be exhibiting" Off the Wall: Painted Constructions" in the Lillian Immig Gallery. In her solo show at Emmanuel, Mary Sherman is exhibiting a large scale painted construction/installation entitled, Godzilla (Reduced to Frames). Interestingly, Sherman was trained as a traditional figurative painter. However, in this work she is examining what painting is and what it can be. Large-scale empty painting frames are piled up to form a tall monster like shape, hence the title of the work. The frames are painted in the primary colors and are coated in vi(l,Cp.ish or sawdust. Sherman has also painted small chemical formulas on to the frames to draw the viewer further into the epgulfing work. This is the first time this installation has been exhibited in the Boston area. A reception for the opening of the exhibit was held on Wednesday, November 15th from '6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Mary Sherman's work will be on display through December 14th, 2000. The Lillian Immig Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. Anyone interested in viewing Sherman's work can also schedule an appointment by calling 735- 9992.

Attention Students: Join Kaleidoscope and Prepare for Your Future

By Danielle A. Radford '01

As a writer, it is hard to imagine a career that would include anything but this art. And, as a Communications major, it is hard to imagine not being involved in the student publication here at Emmanuel. The newsmagazine, Kaleidoscope, has become a daily part of my schedule. As the editor, I am always on the lookout for news leads, feature stories, art or literature to include, and I am on the lookout for new staff.

The current staff does not consist only of Communications majors, but instead is a representation of the diversity we are privileged to be a part of at this small, liberal arts college. Yet it amazes me to think that there are students out there, some who want to pursue journalism or other fields in writing, who do not think it is

necessary to be involved in their school's publication. It is a fact that employers expect that Communications or Journalism majors will have graduated with some experience on their school's publication.

Now is the chance for you to become involved! This is a great opportunity for you to not only beef up your resume, but also to get some real, hands on experience at a working publication. This is not limited to writers, but includes anyone who feels they have something to say, such as artists, graphic designers, poets, etc. So, contact us today, and start making a difference on your campus. This is your publication, your chance for some "realworld" experience, your opportunity to make an impact.

Those who are interested in

becoming a part of the

Kaleidoscope staff, or just wish to

contribute (this includes staff and

alumnae, too), please email us at

[email protected].

Or, stop by our open office hours

every Wednesday from 10-11am,

held in the Publications Office

(plaza level of the Administration

Building). We look forward to

seeing you there!

Fall Update Fro~ The Internships & Career Development Office

We are happy with our success in placing students with internships and career-related, paid part-time positions. Currently, we have students participating in fall internships at many companies and organizations such as Arnold Communications, CBS BostonIWBZ-Channel 4 News, Campusnut.com, J Magazine, Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus, 'Brigham & Women's Hospital, Franciscan Children's Hospital, Boston Lyric Opera and The Office of Travel & Tourism for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are continuing to add to our internship database with a goal of obtaining more PAID internship opportunities.

We are also conducting constant employer outreach to be able to offer more career-related part-time jobs available throughout the school year. This fall we implemented a job listing service through our First Class E-mail system. Emmanuel students can log into their email account and find a sampling of job listings, internship opportunities and career fair events and programs! This "HOT JOBS from IICD" conference has received good feedback from students. We've noticed that students are checking the listings on a regular basis and have obtained part-time paid career related jobs at Big SisterlLittle Sister Association of New England, Mad Science Jobs of Boston, Shilts Chiropractic, Bright Horizons Childcare and Children's Hospital. We feel this has been an effective way to communicate to students about what's out there and how they can enhance their careers. For more information call or stop by the Internship and Career Development Office on the plaza level of the Administration Building (264-7794).

All Souls Day Mass

The Campus Life awards are presented annually at Family Weekend to individual students, faculty, staff members and administrators to recognize their outstanding contributions to the life and vitality of the campus. Below are the recipients of this year's awards and the citations honoring them.

Campus Life Award 2000

Jeffrey Smith

Jeffrey Smith is the catering manager at Emmanuel and he is loved by the members of the Emmanuel community. An Amherst College graduate, Jeffrey brings with him to his work at Emmanuel a respect and interest in the liberal arts that fits beautifully with a College community. Jeffrey provides food for the soul and mind as well as the body as he enhances our meals with literary and historical references. An accomplished musician, Jeffrey has performed at special occasions of members of the college community. Whatever he does- delivering a cup of tea in the dining hall to a faculty member, scooping out garlic mashed potatoes to a student or playing the organ at a staff member's wedding, Jeffrey does so with competence, style and graciousness. If food is the heart of the kitchen and kitchen is the heart of the home, this catering manager is darn close to the heart of Emmanuel College. It is with gratitude for all that Jeffrey has done for the Emmanuel College community that we are pleased to recognize him with the Campus Life Award.

Campus Life Award 2000

Patricia Rowley '02

Consistently, Patricia Rowley has been a contributing member of our campus, having served as a general member of the Student Life Activities Committee and an Orientation Leader. However, her contributions this year were of particular significance as Patricia spoke publicly twice on behalf of Emmanuel College in City Hall. A Presidential Scholar, Dean's List member, and Boston resident, Patricia was selected by the College to support the College Master Plan, first before the Boston Redevelopment Authority and second before the Zoning Commission. Patricia'~ passionate and sincere remarks contributed significantly to the favorable outcome; both boards voted positively to support the College Master Plan. For Patricia's superb representation of the student body and the College, Emmanuel College is proud to recognize her with a Campus Life Award.

The Saint Julie Billiart Medal 2000 The St. Julie Billiart Medal is presented to a student who exemplifies the mission of the College and the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

An active member of the Emmanuel community, Rouba has also served as an Admissions Ambassador, a tutor in the Academic Resource Center, and most recently as a Resident Assistant in St . Joseph Hall. For Rouba's consistent record of service to others and her commitment to the ideals of Emmanuel and the Sisters of Notre Dame, Emmanuel College is proud to present you with the St. Julie Billiart medal.

Ruth David has made contributions to Emmanuel in many different ways, as the Treasurer of the Student Life Activities Committee, as the Student ' Government Association Vice President, and as the founder of the Emmanuel women's field hockey club. Through her leadership, the dream of a field hockey club has become a reality for many Emmanuel students. For Ruth's initiative and her perseverance, Emmanuel College is proud to recognize her with a Campus Life Award.

Campus Life Award 2000 \

Rachel Zaitz '02

Rachel Zaitz has been an active member of Peace and Justice during the last three years, serving as President for the past two years. In conjunction with her officers, she led the club to be recognized as the 1999-2000 student organization of the year. Living out the club's philosophy of peace and justice through service, Rachel volunteers weekly at community Servings, an agency which prepares food for homebound , AIDS patients and their families. Rachel has also volunteered at St. Francis de Sales After-school program and the City-year Serve-athon, among others. An excellent student, Rachel has also been recognized on the Dean's list. For Rachel's strong leadership and demonstrated commitment to serving those most in need of help, Emmanuel College is proud to present her with a Campus Life Award.

The Saint Catherine Medal 2000 The St. Catherine Medal of Kappa Gamma Pi is presented to a sophomore or junior who has achieved some special recognition or served the College in some extraordinary way.

Jennifer Tobin '02

Jen Tobin is an extraordinary leader. Dedicated and steadfast, Jen has made contributions to Emmanuel in every arena possible- as a Dean's List recipient, a member of the dance team, an Admissions Ambassador, an officer of her class, an Orientation Leader, and most recently as the President of the Student Government Association. Jen leads with a quiet strength and is absolutely dependable. When there is a job to be done, Jen represents the College with loyalty, competence and perseverance. For Jen's generosity of spirit and her dedicated service to the College, Emmanuel is proud to present her with the St. Catherine medal.

Volleyball The Volleyball team, coached by Joe

Seid, Head Coach, and Dave Larson, Assistant Coach, finished the season with an overall record of 23 wins and 8 losses. They lost a tough battle in the Conference Semi-Finals to St. Joseph's College. In that match, junior outside hitter, Maya Antic, went down in the second match with an ankle injury. The Emmanuel College Volleyball team is ranked third in the conferenc·e.

The team was comprised of five freshmen, who contributed greatly to the overall success along with the experience of five returning players. Kristal Brennan was named Rookie of the Week for October 23, 2000.

Soccer Although the Soccer team withstood

some reoccurring injuries to key players, they still managed to end the season respectfully. Coached by Lauren Piasecki, the Soccer team advanced to the GNAC Quaterfinals and finished the season with 4 wins and 14 losses. "This overall record is no indication of the actual talent of the team" says Crystal Carroll, Assistant Director of Athletics, Assistant Basketball Coach and Athletic Academic Coordinator. The Emmanuel College Soccer team is ranked seventh in the conference.

Players on the Soccer team include Katie Kemmitt '02, Munira Abdella '04, Kristen Shepardson '01, Susan Thompson '03, Jen Logan '03, Katie Baribeault '03, Vickie Shalian '01, Rebecca Rogers '03, Kellie Folsom '04, Ryann Archer '03, Jennifer Brown '04, Tamara Humphries '01, Nancy Henriquez '01, Stephanie Leite '03, Pam Crill '03, and Deb Kamel '04.
