One of the UK’s ‘top 4’ providers of Initial Teacher Training, the School of Education at Staffordshire University is an excellent place to get a head start towards a successful future.

If you’re thinking about a career working with learners or perhaps even becoming a teacher, you’ll find our highly regarded BA(Hons) Early Childhood Studies or BA(Hons) Education provide a perfect start. Achieved Ofsted ‘Outstanding’Jonathan Brown believes that his study experiences at Staffordshire University will encourage more men to consider Early Years Education and Care as a worthwhile career option. Jonathan, from Penkridge, who opened the nursery at Chadsmoor Community Infant and Nursery School in Cannock back in 2001, graduated with a Foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies from Staffordshire University. Yet that wasn’t the only good news he received – the nursery founded by him recently achieved its second ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted.

Gaining extra knowledgeTalking about the Ofsted success, Jonathan said: “This was partly due to the course giving me the extra knowledge which I’ve been able to share with the nursery staff – and so it has had an impact on their practice also.”

Made to feel valuedJonathan completed his Foundation degree at one of Staffordshire University’s partner institutions, South Staffordshire College, and praises the College for making him feel valued.

Keeping education in the family, a mother and daughter graduated on the same day and with the same qualification. Alison Molloy, 45, and daughter Demi, 21, supported each other through their studies and are now celebrating their success together after gaining degrees in Early Childhood Studies.

Alison knew a change of career was due after being made redundant. She decided that childcare was the right route and took a position at Meadowside Nursery in Blurton. After gaining a taste of Higher Education with an NVQ, she progressed from Nursery Nurse, to Supervisor, eventually becoming Deputy Manager. At about the same time, daughter Demi began volunteering at the nursery, working alongside her mum.

Talking about her course, Alison said: “It has been difficult at times. As a part-time student, it is hard to juggle family life, working full-time and to meet course deadlines – but friends and family have pulled me through it and supported me to continue and complete every stage.”

Demi, who studied over three years, full-time, added: “With me on the same course, we were able to do it together and help each other through. Although it has been hard, having each other’s support has been great.”

Alison is now fully qualified and continues in her role as Deputy Manager at Meadowside. Demi has just been accepted onto the Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP) – an exciting opportunity to gain real life experience with continued training on the job. Demi has since trained to be a teacher.

This degree will prepare you for many types of employment where you will be working with children aged from birth to eight years old, and is especially appropriate for those wishing to progress to Early Years Professional Status as the content has been developed to meet the need for well-qualified early years specialists. Alternatively, you could move into teaching, social work, further education, charity work, management or on to a higher degree course.

Throughout the degree, you will examine a range of areas and disciplines that focus upon a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary understanding of children, families, policy and practice.

The degree will prepare you for many types of employment where you will be working with young children, families, practitioners and other professionals. It will however, also enable you to come to a deeper understanding of yourself as a learner and encourage you to think critically, reflectively and analytically. These are all skills that are in demand by employers in all occupations.

We have carefully developed the teaching and learning strategies for this course. The strategies employed are designed to provide practical contexts for the analysis and evaluation of contemporary issues within the field.

We recognise that you may come to the award having not been engaged with this area of study before and the programme is designed to introduce the concepts behind early childhood and then to develop these as the programme progresses. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will assist you to maintain and develop your Personal Development Profile as you go through the programme.

The VLE ‘Blackboard’, will provide flexible support for you and the university has an extensive range of e-journals and e-books which all students of Staffordshire University have access to.

A significant feature of the programme will be your placement in a variety of early years settings. Two days a week will be placement experience with one block placement each semester. You will be expected to undertake work-based activities in preparation for your teaching and learning sessions within the academic setting. These may include information gathering exercises, observations of children or work processes and involvement in the planning process.

This degree prepares the student to work in a range of settings with children from birth to eight years old. The course has been designed to meet the needs of anyone looking to work with people in any professional context that involves learning. This includes anyone considering working in educational settings such as schools, colleges, academies, museums and art galleries, youth services, education departments within film, theatre, radio and television, armed forces etc.

This degree in Education Studies offers access to a wide variety of career and academic options. You may progress to employment within family and children centres, care support, educational administration and management, play work, learning support and so on. Alternatively, you may enter teaching.

A significant feature of the programme is the extended work placement that can take place across a variety of workplace settings. Whereas initial placements are more to do with how you see yourself within a professional working environment, later placements will focus on how you work with others individually and in teams and how you see yourself as contributing to the aims, ethos and culture of the workplace.

You will encounter a wide range of learning experiences, including lectures, individual tutorials, group tutorials, seminars, workshops, problem-based learning, practical work placement and independent study. However, the main modes of study will be class contact and directed self study. All modules will require a certain amount of independent research study which will feed into your face-to-face sessions.

With a low cost of living and a very competitive fees structure – it pays to study at Staffordshire University.

The most common way to fund your undergraduate study is with a student loan. This is a loan from the Government that covers your tuition fees. It means you don’t have to pay anything to the University up front. And in fact, you don’t have to pay anything back until you’ve graduated and are earning over £21,000.

APPLYING FOR PART-TImEYou need to complete an application form for the part-time course of your choice. You can apply online by completing the part-time application form, visit www.staffs.ac.uk/parttimeform or complete a paper application form, which can be obtained from the Customer Contact Centre.

ENROLmENTEnrolment for full-time and part-time courses usually takes place in September, with teaching starting soon after. As some courses do vary, please check out the enrolment times for your particular course. Don’t worry, when you apply you will be given all the details so you will know where to go, at what time and on what day.
