We are committed to providing education grounded in evidence-based practice developed through current research. We are dedicated to active participation in nursing research and the mentoring of staff nurses to critique and participate in research in order to advance their practice. This department contributes to the provision of a broad-based healthcare delivery system through age and population specific teaching strategies through interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration. 1. Double click on the Internet Explorer.

2. Go to www.methodisthospital.net

4. Click on “Class Registration” (Left-hand side)

5. Click on the + next to category to view all classes.

8. Click “Add to Course List”

9. All classes added to the course list will be posted at top of screen.

10. Fill out all of the “Participant Information”.

b. There is no charge for MH employees.

Once you have registered for a class, you cannot go back in and un-enroll. You must call the Education & Research Department at 270-827-7114 (x7114) to do so. Classes that have already reached their maximum participant limit will not be visible when signing up for a class.

Charge Nurse Workshop The Facts

Education This workshop is being offered to experienced and beginning nurses that fulfill the Charge Nurse Role at Methodist Hospital. Our program focuses on defining the traditional and exemplary roles of a charge nurse, mapping of responsibilities, and review of the components needed to perform their tasks effectively. Topics of discussion will include effective communication, team building, decision making, chain of command, staffing tasks and developing leadership skills. The program will be offered quarterly throughout the year as a four hour course. Minimum class size – 3 participants

HIV/AIDS – An Overview The Facts

Education This course is designed to provide basic medical and epidemiological information regarding HIV and the diseases and conditions it can cause. Material reviewed will include methods of transmission and prevention of HIV along with current recognized methods of medical treatment. Participants will review management of HIV in the healthcare workplace and the legal issues surrounding HIV infection. At the conclusion of the course participants will review appropriate attitudes and behaviors toward individuals infected with HIV and the comprehensive human services available to assist those with the HIV infection.

Preceptor Program The Facts

Education This program is to serve as an introduction to the role of Nurse Preceptor. This workshop covers general information that applies to all Nurse Preceptors throughout the hospital including but not limited to:

• Roles, responsibilities, & expectations • How adults learn • Time management • Helping orientees overcome “reality shock” • Orientation and competency assessment and

verification process • Providing effective feedback • Evaluating orientees & letting go • e-Learning test of covered material

Due to the vast differences from unit to unit, unit specific roles, responsibilities, & expectations will not be covered in this course. This should be covered by Unit Managers &/or Clinical Coordinators after completion of this course. Minimum class size – 3 participants

Pressure Ulcer Prevalence The Facts

Education Purpose: To determine prevalence of hospital/unit acquired pressure ulcers and to bench mark with national data base. Prerequisites for participation: Completion of the most recent NDNQI on-line Pressure Ulcer Training program. Please call Education and Research Department for instructions. Certificate of completion should be sent to your department director prior to participation. Periodic revisions by NDNQI will require re-training with new certificate printed.

Diabetes Self Management Education Mini Class

The Facts

Education One day, 3 hour visit The RN/CDE and Dietitian provide instructions on the A.A.D.E.’s 7 Self-Care Behaviors, in a one on one setting. These 7 Self-Care Behaviors enable the individual to make lifestyle changes, in order to meet his goal(s). Risk factors for both short-term and long-term complications may be prevented or delayed. A one hour appointment for a one to one assessment is done on an individual basis, with the nurse and dietitian. Part One’s instructor is the nurse. Part Two’s instructor is the dietitian.
