Know many useful things. Research the internet: management principles, leadership skills, how to conduct effective meetings. Personal Development such as effective speaking. Opusdei.org, USCCB, etc.

You yourself should have a great love for learning & healthy curiosity about everything-music,sports,etc.

Spend much time talking w/ your kids- show enjoyment. Let them ask never-ending ”Whys”, don’t be irritated

Find out about different college courses, careers, sales vs marketing, finance & accounting, etc.,different types of industries, pros & cons

Explain the need and importance of graduating with honors in today’s competitive world. Know what all HRD’s look for in candidates for new hires, & why

Knowing a lot more gives you more options and therefore helps you come up w/ better decisions (fewer options=limited base)

Better shown by the example of the parents vs preaching. Waking up early, performing a task to full completion, hard-work, patience, humility-accepting w/ peace and cheerfulness what you have or don’t have, generosity w/ God & w/ others, not complaining, not talking about other people, etc.

In corporate or HRD language, “competencies” consist mostly of virtues needed to perform well on the job

Virtues related to religion: Faith,Hope,Charity Virtues related to the Intellect: Order, Search for

Truth, Humility, Striving for Excellence Virtues related to the Will: Patience, Courage,

Cheerfulness, Optimism, Industriousness, Generosity & Self-Giving, Perseverance, Constancy, Gratitude/Thankfulness

Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance

Virtues take time to develop. Must be a never-ending repetition of good habits

Fruit & result of good guidance by the parents done patiently with a lot of love, with the previous steps of Teachings, Advice, Friendship, Good Communication, & Practice of Virtues

The child must have clear goals for his relationship with God, relationship with his family and friends, and for a successful professional career or business

He must have self-discipline not because of fear of parents, but because of a very clear understanding of what has to be accomplished, and the resulting consequences of either victory or failure

He will build a stronger relationship with God and the others, and will be a good professional if he has developed the good habit of constantly striving to do the best & to be excellent even in the smallest “insignificant” task

Trust = LOVE More often mistrust is sown or first shown by

parents by the questions (“investigation”) they ask, with lots of rash judgment. Child equates lack of trust=lack of love!

A valuable advice for parents: even when there is strong motive for mistrust, parents must continue to act with a lot of trust and confidence that people can change, especially young people. If wrong behavior continues, research on most effective ways to encourage, influence, motivate. Exceptions: evidence of drug use, alcohol abuse, gambling, stealing.

When you trust your children, they may go wrong once in a while, but they will try to improve, in an almost subconscious effort to earn that trust.
