Edward the Confessor Edward the Confessor was the son of the Saxon king who defeated King Cnut 1016. He was crowned king after King Cnut died and his sons the throne onto Edward the Confessor. Edward the Confessor died in 1066. He didn’t have any children and his only nephew was only 14, and too young to take the throne.

At the beginning of 1066 Edward the confessor ruled England after his death there was confusion of who should be the new king as Edward had no son after many battles it was decided that Harold Goodwinsson should be king after he defeated Tostig and Harald Hadrada in battle. once Harold Goodwinsson was king he fought William and lost. William became king.

The two famous battles of  1066 were the battle of Hastings. this battle began after Harold Goodwinson was coroneted because the other contestants for the throne were angered by this the battle began. Stanford bridge was the other famous battle of 1066 this battle took place on the 25th of September it was were the armies clashed because of a surprise attack.in this battle Tostig and Harold Hadrada was killed

Bayeux Tapestry- Edwards Funeral

This part of the tapestry shows Edward dying On the 5th of January. The tapestry shows the scenes of his death and funeral procession.

In the upper chamber of his castle shown in the right of the right of the tapestry is in bed dying, he is talking to his faithful followers, including Harold and his wife Queen Edith.

Below is him lying dead, a priest is with him. Two noblemen offer Edward the crown and axe which are signs of royalty, meaning that Harold was the new King. He accepted them. It is said that Edwards dying wish was for Harold to be the new King.

To the left of this is King Edwards funeral procession, there are a group of men carrying Edward towards Westminster Abbey in his coffin, where his funeral procession was, and the was buried in Westminster Abbey, it is said that they buried him in the holiest part of the Abbey.
