The present roadmap•Pragmatic approach to fusion energy.•Focus the effort of European laboratories around 8 Missions•Ensure innovation through early industrial involvement •Exploit the opportunities arising from international collaborations

Background

European Commission proposal for Horizon 2020 states the need of an ambitious yet realistic roadmap to fusion electricity by 2050. Require DEMO construction in ~ 2030

Enabling Research, Training and Education

• Enabling Research (7M€/y)– Selection by STAC on the basis of excellence of proposal

• Training (7M€/y)– Fellowships (10 new trainee/y) – Goal Oriented Training (40 new trainee/y)

• Education (9M€/y)– Support to the education of ~ 600 PhD students every year.

§ Definition of Member participation§Call. Info on resources/relevant skills that each HoRU is ready to commit for the Consortium. Launched 22 October – 3 weeks deadline

§Selection. PLs select the contribution of each lab in close interaction with the interested RUs. Allocation of resources for each member to be approved in December 2013. Info needed for the submission of the grant proposal.

§Definition of the detailed work. Defined during the preparation of the Project Management Plan (December 2013 – April 2014) by each PL in close interaction with the laboratories participating in the project.

Present status

§ Original request was 758M€ for 2014-18 from EC. Available funds will be 734M€. This figure could increase if additional 3rd party contribution will become available. The budget will have to accommodate also 87.5% of JET Operation.

§ Present planning assumption is to operate JET until 2017 and wind-up in 2018, with a DT experiment in 2017. This could change if there will be a substantial participation in JET by 3rd parties. The conceptual design for a new set of RMP coils (collaboration with IPR, India) will be completed at the beginning of 2014

§ Investment in new facilities (DTT and Early Neutron Source) are included in the budget starting in the second half of the 5 years period.
