    INTRODUCTION

    This course covers broad issues ofEgress Fire protection. Our

    discussion will be in two parts. Part

    one contains introduction to Egress

    and fire protection. Part two will

    discuss the Means of Egress and

    Emergency and fire prevention plans.

    The goal of this course is to emphasi#e the general fundamentalre"uirements essential to providing a safe means of egress from fire -

    and other li!e emergencies - from a new or old building+structuredesigned for human occupancy

    This course outlines only the minimum regulations for buildings andstructures as set forth in 5ubpart E of O56$ standards' re"uirements

    that could and should be e%ceeded when necessary.

    Each e%it discharge must lead directly outside or to a street' wal!way'refuge area' public way' or open space with access to the outside.The space to which an e%it discharge leads must be large enough toaccommodate the building occupants li!ely to use the e%it route.

    $ll means of egress must be in compliance with the following

    guidelines with regards to e%it routes:

    The ceiling of an e%it route must be at least 7*+8 feet high9 anyprojection from the ceiling must not reach a point less than 2*8+1feet from the floor.

    $n e%it access must be at least 8 inches wide at all points.

    ;here there is only one e%it access leading to an e%it or e%itdischarge' the width of the e%it and e%it discharge must be atleast e"ual to the width of the e%it access.

    The width of an e%it route must be sufficient to accommodate thema%imum permitted occupant load of each floor served by thee%it route.

    Objects that project into the e%it route must not reduce the widthof the e%it route to less than the minimum width re"uirements fore%it routes.

    Employees must be able to open an e%it route door from the inside at

    all times without !eys' tools' or special !nowledge. E%it route doors

    must be free of any device or alarm that could restrict emergency use

    of the e%it route if the device or alarm fails.
