After reading the story of Anoop and Prakash, please answer the question at the
end
Anoop, started his career as an assistant engineer at a mid-sized local manufacturing company where his
father has been employed for over 30 years. Even though Anoop had several other job offers before taking
up this job, he decided to take up this job mainly because he knew the company well through his father and
it is in the same town. Anoop enjoyed his job very much and through a combination of hard work and good
luck, he has grown to a divisional VP level. Anoop undertook several challenging assignments during the
course of his job. At one time he was given the responsibility of building a whole new production facility in
the nearby town and he had won an award for completing the project early and within the planned budget.
When he joined the company it was a mid-sized predominantly local company. Now, after expanding to
several neighboring states, it is on the Fortune 2000 list of companies. Anoops job with this company was
not without unexpected events. At one point in time he was planning to leave the company because he could
not get along with his then manager. Time solved most of the problems and Anoop stayed on and retired as aVP at the age of 68 with very good retirement benefits and more than enough savings to enjoy his retired
life.
Prakash, on the other hand, had a career quite opposite to that of Anoop. Prakash started his career as an
independent entrepreneur. After graduation, he had opened a small auto repair shop even though his
engineering degree would have enabled him to secure a good white collar job with an established company
in the nearby town. However, Prakashs plans have always been quite clear; he would graduate from high
school, go to college and major in Engineering, then start his own business. Prakash had done just that.
Since graduating from college, Prakash has put in about six years developing his business and gained a lot of
valuable experience in establishing and running his own business. By this time he has made enough money
and gained enough confidence to expand his repair facilities outside his home state. In 20 years, he has
expanded his auto repair operations to 35 states and in more than 200 locations. Prakash faced several
formidable challenges in the course of 35 years in business. The oil shock during 1970s was a big blow to
his business and he was almost at the brink of bankruptcy. Prakash always believed that the ability to take
calculated risks combined with hard work will pay off in the end. He retired at the age of 70 and has made
more than enough money to enjoy the rest of his life.
