HOLIDAY HOME WORK

Dear Parent,

Greetings from entire Eicher Family!

We are going through unprecedented times and unusual challenges. At this time today, when our children were standing at the threshold of the new academic session, unable to enter the portals of their alma mater, we, the whole teaching fraternity, has been engaged in working towards equipping our learners with the best possible resources. The assignments, worksheets, notes, notifications and all-important announcements - all came to a change from regular hard copy to a soft online e-copy.

Covid-19, till date has affected our life to a great extent. However, technology has been a savior and the connect is established through online platforms. Technology is an enabler and the possibilities are limitless. Under the aegis of the GOODEARTH FOUNDATIONS, the Management has worked very hard to develop an online system of learning and teaching. In this regard we are also working for an in-house platform to facilitate the learning process for our children.

Safe and secure, live classrooms have been a boon to teachers and learners like.

Online education has propelled the integration of technology and pedagogical practices and we intend to continue with online classes for our all the grades as we at EICHER, firmly believe that online classes are definitely here to stay as they are becoming more credible.

To match this our teachers have been working round the clock to develop content to avoid any lacuna in the teaching learning process. They have showcased such agility and adaptability in using methodologies like blended learning or flipped classrooms, videos involving content adequate to understand concepts prescribed in the curricular material and factually designed power point presentations to supplement learning outcomes for students.

Dear parents, we have received so much of positive feedback from students and parents of grades 11 and 12 about the virtual platform and the manner in which our beloved teachers conducted these classes. As teachers are literally the builders of our children’s future and stakeholders who are equally involved in the metamorphosis of our dear children, we request your whole hearted cooperation to help us overcome these challenging times.

But then there’s another point also and that is how this has increased screen time for eyes.

And so, after almost seventy days of regular and rigorous online classes, it’s time to take a break. A break for our kids to keep electronic gadgets away, take a long breath and sit back to relax with the family. As our kids are now more curious, ask lots of questions, learn to speak confidently and discover a new hobby but did you know that it is ok to be bored sometimes?

That’s when our brain gets creative and we get new ideas!!!

I will say to my students that – If you have done something interesting like read a new book, heard a new story, learnt a new experiment, cooked a new dish, learnt new words, etc, remember to share it with everyone in the class, once we are back. We will love to hear your experiences. Do spend some time every day with your holiday home work as well.

So, go ahead and have loads of fun!

Here are some tips for your summer break:

• Follow a routine. Avoid eating and sleeping at irregular times.

• Enjoy summer fruits, nutritious food and drink plenty of water and juices.

• Observe how birds and animals around you are working to beat the heat.

• Do ample freehand drawing, colouring and reading of story books.

• Play games such as Snakes and Ladders, Hide ‘n’ Seek and Bingo.

• Spend time with parents/grandparents.

• Help mamma and pappa with daily chores like cleaning up and watering the plants.

• Give away your unused clothes and toys to someone who will need them.

Happy Holidays!

1 .COMPREHENSION PASSAGES

PASSAGE 1

Read the following passage carefully :

1. When a brave mountaineer is assailing the Everest he is as great a hero as a cosmonaut

rocketing towards Mars in his space capsule, and thousands of men and women in

different countries back his progress with their good wishes and share the thrills and

anxieties of his hazardous journey to the roof of the world, while scores of anxious

scientists wish him success in the hope of obtaining valuable information on atmospheric

conditions in the upper regions of the earth. Mountaineering is indeed a source of

pleasure and a mine of useful knowledge which is constantly enriching the scientific

vocabulary of geologists, mineralogists and glaciologists of the world.

Mountaineering is a perennial source of joy to those who have eyes that can appreciate

beauties of nature. Nowhere does nature reveal her charm in greater abundance than on

green and flowering mountain tops with transparent stream of water, flowing down their

slopes or on snow clad hills where sunlight weaves its magic colours into their virginal

whiteness. To lovers of mountains the sound of waterfalls is like the joyful clapping of

merry primitive dancers and the howling of night winds contains a musical pleasantness

which surpasses the highly sustained rhapsodies of man-made organs. Lakes in high

altitudes, holding within their cup-like mountainous enclosures the watery wealth of

surrounding glaciers, treeless plateaus covered with rare varieties of grass, plants and

flowers and yawning chasms into whose dark, unfathomable interior nature‟s countless

species of animals and plants carry on their flight for existence, are attractions so

powerful and irresistible that no man or woman who is a member of a mountaineering

party or club can turn a deaf ear to their call. These widely scattered, ever-alluring

treasures of nature are the climber‟s greatest inducement to wander with a hungry heart in

search of beauty, adventure and fame along the dangerous slopes of sky embracing

heights.

Mountaineering is an awfully risky venture in the case of those ambitious souls who are

Page 4: EICHER SCHOOL, FARIDABAD HOLIDAY HOME WORK CLASS …...in working towards equipping our learners with the best possible resources. The assignments, worksheets, notes, notifications

dreaming of conquering such majestic peaks as Annupuma, Dhaulegiri and Everest and

who wish to be ranked among the world‟s greatest climbers Sir Edmund P Hillary and

Tenzing Norgey. Dozens of adventurers belonging to different nations with their hearts

burning with a passion to conquer the highest peak in the world perished in the immortal

snows of the Himalayas, after painfully, inching their way to heights which were in close

proximity to the summit. No setbacks can discourage such ambitious people as they are

determined souls.

Answer the following questions :

. l. Why are the mountaineers considered heroes ?

2. What are the beautiful sights which catch a mountaineer‟s eye ?

3. Why is mountaineering considered necessary?

4. Setbacks in mountaineering do not dampen the spirit of many mountaineers. Why ?

(c) those who love nature (d) those who love loneliness

4. Mountaineering is a venture which is .................. .

PASSAGE 2

Read the following passage carefully.

1. Among those who are making history in modern India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stands in a class by

himself. Both as a political force to be reckoned with and as a personality to be admired, he dominates the

Page 5: EICHER SCHOOL, FARIDABAD HOLIDAY HOME WORK CLASS …...in working towards equipping our learners with the best possible resources. The assignments, worksheets, notes, notifications

Indian scene, next only to Gandhi. As a political force he defies assessment; as a personality he challenges

analysis. In India he is loved more than anyone else save Gandhi. Outside India his reputation is said to

surpass even that of Gandhi. His popularity, unlike that of most other Congress leaders, is not localized to his

own province. He is a universal darling and collects admiring multitudes1 wherever he goes.

All classes of people dote on him, the poor because he is their champion, the rich because he is an aristocrat.

He impresses the learned with his writings and intoxicates the crowd with his rhetoric. Revolutionaries

applaud his fiery eloquence, and fashionable society ladies adore his handsome appearance and his cultured

conversation. Politically he symbolizes India‟s challenge to Europe, intellectually he represents India‟s debt

to the West, spiritually he is torn between the two. The Indian masses idolize him, the European intellectuals

admire him.

Unlike Gandhi, he is not an enigma to the European. He is not the mysterious East which baffles the West. A

European feels ill at ease in Gandhi‟s presence. He feels the power of his personality, is even fascinated by it.

He may even revere him as the image of Christ, and yet he senses something uncanny" about Gandhi. Gandhi

is unpredictable. He is a power whose mechanism he does not understand, whose voltage he does not know.

But with Jawaharlal the European feels at home. Here is someone who talks like him, thinks like the best of

them. Nehru is cast in the heroic mould, the pattern of his idealism is familiar to the European. His faith is

essentially secular, his values ethical, his thinking rational, his reactions predictable. He acts as a civilized

man of the twentieth century may be expected to act.

To call Nehru un-lndian would be to misread the forces that are shaping modem India. lndia is not only what

she has been for thousands of years, not only what her millions still are in the villages, but what she is

struggling to be, what her awakened intelligentsia are aspiring to make her. This is not the first time in her

history that the impact of an alien civilization has forced her out of her shell and obliged her to re-assess old

values in terms of a changing world.

1. Answer the following questions :

i. Why do all classes of people love Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ?

ii. Why does a European feel ill at ease in Gandhi‟s presence ?

iii. What is the impact of an alien civilization on India ?

iv. Will it be right to call Nehru un-Indian ?

2. Choose and write the options you consider the most appropriate :

A. Jawaharlal enjoys the reputation of a .............. . .

(a) national leader (b) inter- national leader

(c) local leader (d) provincial leader

B. The common people are impressed by .............. .

(a) Nehru‟s learning (b) his handsome personality

(c) his rhetoric (d) his aristocracy

C. A European fails to comprehend Gandhi‟s real personality because ...........

(a) Gandhi appears weird to him (b) Gandhi preaches spirituality only

(c) Gandhi talks of honesty in politics (d) Gandhi 1s a strong moralist

Page 6: EICHER SCHOOL, FARIDABAD HOLIDAY HOME WORK CLASS …...in working towards equipping our learners with the best possible resources. The assignments, worksheets, notes, notifications

D. According to the author, the modem India is what ...................

(a) the people are aping the West (b) the intellectuals are aspiring to make it

(c) the politicians have envisioned it (d) the engineers have made it

E. The word ”eloquence” in para 2 means ............

(a) bombast (b) proficiency

(c) fast speech (d) fluent speech

F. The noun form of the word „idolize‟ is ..................... –

(a) idol (b) ideal

(c) ideally (d) idea

3. Answer the following questions.

a. Find a word in the passage which means the same as „excel‟ (para 1)

b. Give the meaning of the word „impact‟. (para 4)

.

INTRODUCTION:

History is one of the most important disciplines in school education. It is the study of the past, which helps us to understand our present and shape our future. It promotes the acquisition and understanding of historical knowledge in breath and in depth across cultures.

The course of history in senior secondary classes is to enable to students to know that history is a critical discipline, a process of enquiry, a way of knowing about the past rather than just a collection of facts. The syllabus helps them to understand the process, through which a historian collects, chooses, scrutinizes and assembles different types of evidences to write history.

The syllabus in class-XI is organized around some major themes in world history. In class XII the focus shifts to a detailed study of some themes in ancient, medieval and modern Indian history.

OBJECTIVES: Project work will help students -

• To develop skills to gather data from a variety of sources, investigate diverse viewpoints and arrive at logical deductions.

• To develop skills to comprehend, analyse, interpret, evaluate historical evidence and also understand the limitations of historical evidence.

• To develop 21st century managerial skills of co-ordination, self-direction and time management.

• To give a multidisciplinary approach to topics.

• To learn to work on diverse cultures, races, religions and lifestyles.

• To learn through constructivism a theory based on observation and scientific study.

• To inculcate a spirit of inquiry and research.

• To communicate data in the most appropriate form using a variety of techniques.

• To provide greater opportunity for interaction and exploration.

• To understand contemporary issues in context to our past.

• To develop a global perspective and an international outlook.
