Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May the peace of Christ be with you and your loved ones! There are two civil issues I would like to highlight this week. First, Mayor Gaylor Baird and the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department issued a local Directed Health Measure that will require all individuals age five and older to wear a face covering when they are in an indoor space that is open to the public unless six feet of separation from others at all times can be achieved. I encourage those who are able to wear masks for Sunday mass out of charity and concern for those who are elderly and have underlying health issues. St. Paul states that we should be obedient to the civil authorities as long as the policies are not contrary to faith and morals (Romans 13:1). Those who are unable to wear masks (under 5, medical condition, conscience or a disability) are still welcome and encouraged to attend mass. The second issue is an important piece of pro-life legislation (LB814). One of the pivotal votes is Senator Kate Bolz, whose district includes Saint Peter’s. If you are so inclined, please contact Senator Bolz’ office at 402-471-2734 or email [email protected] to let her know you support the dignity of all human life and encourage her to vote for the bill. May we continue to pray for unity, “that we may all be one” (John 17:21) and for our civil leaders for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity” (1 Tim. 2:2). Pope St. Clement of Rome provides the Church’s most ancient prayer for political authorities: “Grant to them, Lord, health, peace, concord, and stability, so that they may exercise without offense the sovereignty that you have given them. Master, heavenly King of the ages, you give glory, honor, and power over the things of earth to the sons of men. Direct, Lord, their counsel, following what is pleasing and acceptable in your sight, so that by exercising with devotion and in peace and gentleness the power that you have given to them, they may find favor with you.” In His Mercy, Fr. Clark
