Dear Parishioners, Have you ever felt so tired and frustrated that you don’t have the energy to do anything else? Are you out of steam? This is the time to turn to the Lord. Each day you are invited to renew our relationship with Jesus through his word and personally receive him. Daily mass is a great opportunity to encounter Jesus not only on Sunday but also during the week. I invite you to come, relax, and renew your heart and mind in the love of Jesus. We also have adoration each Monday from 10:30 am to 8 pm. Fr. Joseph

AUGUST 2, 2015 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
St. Albert’s Study
The DRE’s weekly faith topic newsletter The Sunday Obligation
Must I attend Mass every Sunday? If so, why? These are the ques-tions I would like to answer in this article. As our society moves away from the idea of commitment, along with the understanding of sin and duty, the question of attending Mass be-comes more and more confusing amongst the faithful. Allow me to shed some light on this issue.
Firstly, what is Mass? Mass is the propitiatory sacrifice (sacrifice of appeasement) of Christ for our sins. At every Mass, the one infinite sacrifice of Christ on the cross is made present again (he is no re-sacrificed) and offered to God the Father for us. It is also our primary and highest means of worshiping Al-mighty God. Further, the actual body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ is given to us for our sanctification and union with him. Needless to say, we should very much desire to attend Mass every Sunday (or Saturday vigil) and every holy day of obligation.
Do I have to attend every Sunday and holy day of obligation? Does it bind under sin? Yes and yes. As you recall from the Ten Commandments, we are commanded by God to honor the Sabbath. After the Resurrection, the Sabbath was transferred to Sunday, the Lord’s Day. The Church has authority from God to specify how we honor the Sabbath and the Church has declared that the attendance of Sunday Mass ful-fills the command of God. We must understand, however, that while God would never order that which is impossible, the Church can make exceptions i.e. missing mass on Sunday. God says that we must honor the Sabbath, which is always possible. The Church commands that it is honored by attending Mass, which is not always possible. For example, if you are stuck in an airport on Sunday and there is no Mass, it is impos-sible to fulfil the command of the Church. In such a case, you are dispensed with the obligation to attend Mass. You are, however, still commanded by God to honor the Sabbath. How do you do that? Do some additional spiritual activities that you do not normally do. Pray more, read scripture, and set aside time for God. If you do that, you will be doing your duty to our God. Simply not wanting to get out of bed or hav-ing planned some other activity with full knowledge that it would prevent you from going to Mass does not lift the obligation. If you are ever confused about a particular circumstance, feel free to talk to a priest.
As noted, it is a sin to willingly fail to attend Mass. Why and how serious is the sin? It is a sin be-cause it is a violation of an explicit command of God and Church and it is a violation of the natural duty we have to obey and worship our God. If you ever think that God does not care about formal worship, only look to the priesthood of Aaron: God laid down all the rituals and vestments for use in the worship of Him. The Catholic Church is the continuation and fulfillment of the liturgical worship of God. When Christ came he did not dissolve the worship of God, he simply (and magnificently) made himself the victim we offer in-stead of various animals (along with all the other wonderful things he did). With that in mind, it is clear that willingly skipping Mass is a grave sin that, done with full consent and knowledge, is a mortal sin. Those in a state of mortal sin must go to confession before receiving Holy Communion. Never forget that God is merciful and doles out his forgiveness generously, all you have to do is find it in the sacrament of confes-sion.
If you have a topic that you would like me to address, just contact me in the office.
May God Bless you and may His Sacred Heart protect you,

John 6:24-35
In this part of John’s Gospel, we hear how a crowd of people followed Jesus because he had given them bread to eat. Jesus told them not to spend their lives working for regular food -- food that doesn’t last. Instead they should work for food that will make them live forever, that is, the “bread of life.” Jesus is not saying that regular food isn’t important, obviously we need it to be healthy. But Jesus wants us to see the importance of having his life within us. And so, he wants us to have the “bread of life.” Why do you think Jesus calls himself “bread?” How does Jesus feed us at Mass? Does this help you to be a better person? How?
Host Families needed for the 2015/2016 School Year!
We have 2 Catholic students from Spain (Ariadna and Elena) and 1 from Germany (Sophie) who would like to come for the 2015-2016 school year and are waiting for their match with a volunteer host family. They need to be placed by August 31st to be able to come. Volunteer host families (with or without children) as well as single parents are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for the coming school year, one or two semes-ters, starting in August. EMF students have medical in-surance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family’s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. It is not too late to apply. For more information on EMF students, please call Marie-Claude Dijoud now at 1-800-467-8363 or visit our web site at www.emfusa.org
