Una celebrates 99years of good health

ELSABÉ RETIEF

SOUTH Africa’s grandedame of gardening, Unavan der Spuy turned 99 on

Wednesday.Sittingupright inherarmchair

in her beautiful Cape Dutchhome, Old Nectar, with her mag-nolia trees in full bloom, she her-self posed the question: “Whyhave I reached this great age insuch good fettle?” and promptlyresponded with: “Not because Idon’t worry. I do worry, I worryabout my children, I worry aboutwhat is happening in the rest ofthe world. I read The Economistand I know what is happeningelsewhere. But I think God hasbeen on my side, and hereditydoes play a part.

“Positive thinking also helpsenormously, and keeping active, both mentally and physically, does help to promote good health. The mind and the body soon be-come sluggish if not used,” thissprightly 99-year-old continued.

“My husband (General Ken-neth van der Spuy), who died at99, used to walk up the mountainbehind the house with the dogsevery afternoon until he was 97.”

In her 99 years, she has experi-enced incredible changes.

“The first time I saw the sea, atthe age of four, was at the side ofan ox wagon. which was our holi-day accommodation at the KeiMouth in the Eastern Cape. Bycontrast my middle son Peter re-cently flew in a 500-seater aero-plane. Up to ten years ago, I wroteall my letters by hand. Since thenI have used e-mail.”

This gardening expert and wri-ter of 12 books is now busy withher third book in three years, called My favourite plants, whichshould be out by next March.

Una was born on 20 July 1912

inEastLondon,SouthAfrica.Shelivedona farmin theStutterheimdistrict until she was eight yearsold. She attended school in KingWilliam’s Town (Bisho), matricu-lating in 1928. She studied atRhodes University, Graham-stown and later through Unisa.During the early years of WorldWar II she lived in London, butreturned to South Africa in 1941,when she and her husband, Gen-eralKennethvanderSpuyC.B.E.,M.C., bought Old Nectar, an oldCape Dutch House with a few hec-tares of ground, in the Jonkers-hoek Valley.

Here she created a magnificentgarden, which has been declareda National Monument. Everyyear, since 1950, she has openedthe garden each spring to raise

funds for various charities suchas Stellenbosch Hospice andChild Welfare SA: Stellenbosch.

Una has received a MeritAward in 1992 for outstandingservices to Conservation in theCape fromtheCapeTercentenaryFoundation. She has also re-ceived a medal from the Nursery-men’s Association for Meritori-ous Service to Horticulture.

She has three sons, Anthony,Peter and David, six grandchil-dren and nine great grandchil-dren. Before she sat down at hertable for a birthday lunch sur-rounded by family and friends, she had this pearl of wisdom forall of us: “I believe in the saying‘You don’t stop laughing becauseyou grow old, you grow old be-cause you stop laughing’.”

Listen before you leapGOOD intentions, arrogance or gross ignorance?

That is one’s first impression of the government’s proposeddraft Municipal Property Rates Bill. The draft bill stated thatpeople who own more than one residential property will betaxed with commercial rates on their additional properties.

Thisweekthegovernmentback-tracked,sayingits intentionwas to only target guest houses, bed-and-breakfast esta-blishments and small hotels for the business tariff. Is it toomuch to ask that such institutions should be clearly specified?Instead the residential rental industry has been left in a stateof panic, wondering whether to sell or raise the rent.

Good intentions to provide greater clarity in defining andmanaging properties by municipalities, have caused enor-mous confusion. However, taxing a rental property to deathwill result in more properties being off-loaded on an alreadydepressed property market. The Bill, as it now stands, wouldalso not have made much difference to unruly student housesin areas such as Die Weides, as students would continue tooccupy these houses, in spite of the resulting steep increasein rent.

Payingcommercialpropertyratesissomethingthe hospital-ity industry can ill afford. A hike in accommodation pricesandeventheclosureofsomeinstitutions,willhaveanextreme-ly negative effect on local tourism.

Good intentions, alone, should never drive legislation.A similar scenario almost occurred in Stellenbosch when

the previous Mayco was determined to implement draconicmeasures to curb drinking in Stellenbosch. All pubs and clubswere to close at 23:00.

The intentionwasgood: nomore latenight drunkendriving, assaults, rapes and chaos in the town centre. The result wouldhave been counter-productive: pubs in every hostel and youngpeopleontheroads, lateatnight, looking foranillegal shebeen.

Pubs and clubs only come alive at 23:00 in Stellenbosch.Closing them at 02:00 would be far more realistic, althoughthis would in all likelihood not satisfy their young customers.

Compiling any legislation without extensive consultationis doomed to fail. The era of the we-know-what-is-good-for-youattitude has long passed. Listening to the people - suppliersand consumers - is the thing to do.

Simon Adams, Bakkerstraat,Idasvallei, Stellenbosch,skryf:

estetiese waarde. As mense van Afrika moet ons

hierdie ikoniese juweel behou.Die fakulteitvanTeologie isbe-

trokke by ’n navorsingsprojekoor die verband tussen teologieendieMIV/vigs-endemie inAfri-ka. ’n M.Th.-graad in KliniesePastoraat, MIV/vigs-bedieningis ingestel.

Ek sou wou sê: Dit hoort hieren moet hier bly.

Hymeenegterdatdaarnievol-gens ras, taal of geloof geoordeelmoet word nie en dat jy net as’n mens, eerder as ’n wit of ’nswart mens, gebore word.

AbstractThe “domestication” of many animal species was crucial for the development of complex human societies. Although the details of how such domestication took place are lost in Neolithic time, the first step, for each species, presumably involved initial selection for docility. Docility permits handling of the animals, hence their training and controlled breeding. A surprising fact about domestication, however, is that most domesticated mammals exhibit a suite of morphological traits whose connections to each other and to docility are unclear. These characteristics, first noted by Darwin, have been designated collectively the “domestication syndrome”. Its complexity makes its genetic and developmental foundations a puzzle, yet the existence of many domesticated species and the fact that breeding for tameness can be readily achieved experimentally, suggests that the process has a relatively simple (hence easy-to-evoke) genetic basis.

In this talk, I propose that the syndrome is caused by a partial deficiency of a special group of cells that are known to be important in the embryonic genesis of many cell types, structures and organs in animals, such as the facial bones, endocrine cells, peripheral nervous cells, pigmentation cells, teeth and the brain. These cells are termed “neural crest cells” and conditions involving defects in them are termed neurocristopathies. I will review the different phenotypic characteristics seen in the “domestication syndrome” and discuss how they can be explained – some directly, some indirectly – in terms of this hypothesis. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the possible genetic foundations of the condition, ideas for experimental tests, and a note on its possible relevance to human evolution, in light of recent arguments that our species, Homo sapiens, is a “self-domesticated” higher primate.

Dr Adam Wilkins

Adam Wilkins is the former editor of the general biology review journal, BioEssays (1989-2008), the present editor of the commentaries column (“Perspectives”) of Genetics, a former Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (2009-2010) and currently a Fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) (2011). He received his Ph.D. in genetics in 1969 from the University of Washington and did experimental work in bacterial molecular biology, bacteriophage molecular genetics, and slime mould cell biology and development. He is the author of two advanced texts, Genetic Analysis of Animal Development (John Wiley & Sons, 1986, 1993) and The Evolution of Developmental Pathways and is currently writing a book on the evolution of the human face. A second project is a hypothesis paper with 2011 STIAS fellow Professor Richard Wrangham (Harvard) on the long-mysterious “domestication syndrome” of animals, a phenomenon first described by Charles Darwin in the 1860s.

AbstractOver the past two centuries, the dominant view in social science has been that the modern world shows a pattern of linear development in which all positive trends go upward in more or less linear fashion (albeit perhaps at an uncertain speed), and that therefore over time discrepancies between the leaders and the laggards are overcome, toward a relatively homogenized world. This view was shared by classical and neoclassical economics, by what was called Whig historiography, and by most of traditional sociology and anthropology. Classical or orthodox Marxism, while very opposed to a liberal Weltanschauung, shared, by and large, the belief in the inevitability of progress and the linear upward pattern of social processes.

In the post-1945 period, a number of analysts began to contest this linear model. Rather than viewing the modern world as a process of homogenization and therefore of overcoming gaps, many social scientists began to argue that the modern world was one of heterogenization and polarization, indeed a pattern of escalating polarization, which was itself the outcome of the way in which the modern world was structured. An intellectual collaboration of ten research working groups has been evaluating the empirical evidence in this fundamental debate. The research has been large in scale and long in duration. The object of analysis has been the existing world-system as a whole over the whole of its effective existence of the past 500 years.

Professor Immanuel Wallerstein

Immanuel Wallerstein is a Senior Research Scholar at Yale University. He is the author of The Modern World-System (4 vol.); Utopistics, or Historical Choices of the Twenty-first Century; Decline of American Power: The U.S. in a Chaotic World, and European Universalism: The Rhetoric of Power. He was the founder and Director of the Fernand Braudel Center (1976-2005). He was President of the International Sociological Association (1994-1998). He chaired the international Gulbenkian Commission for the Restructuring of the Social Sciences, whose report is Open the Social Sciences. He is the recipient of 15 honorary degrees from 13 countries and the Distinguished Career in Sociology Award of the American Sociological Association, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. There is a Research Chair in his name at Ghent University.

’n Soortgelyke projek is reedsin King Williamstown gevestig.

Help to create jobsfor Mandela DayPROUDLY South African

launched their 93 000 Jobsfor Mandela Day campaign

on Saturday, 16 July as their con-tribution to Mandela Day.

The campaign is launched inassociation with selectedMedia24 titles, which currentlycomprises 57 community papers,News24.com, Talent, The Witnessand Die Burger.

The 93 000 Jobs for MandelaDay-campaign aims to drive jobcreationthroughguidingandmo-bilizingstateorgans, thebusinesssector and citizens on how theycan assist in creating 93 000 jobsfor Mandela from his 93rd to 94thbirthday year.

“Andhowwillwedo this?”asksHerbert Mkhize, acting CEO ofProudly South African.

“Just as we joined hands as anation to host a successful 2010FIFA World Cup, so we must joinhands as a nation to create jobsfor our people in South Africa.South African business, big andsmall, can make a start by procu-ring 50% of their daily consuma-bles, products and services local-

ly, while South Africans can startby filling their trolleys with atleast 50%of locallymanufacturedproducts and goods at their retailstores. We would like to also en-courage all South Africans tostartdemandingtoseemorelocal-ly produced products on theshelves in the various retailstores.”

In keeping with Madiba’s ownapproach in Long Walk to Free-dom, a journeystartswithasinglestep - and small steps in the rightdirection can create amazing re-sults if we work together, he says.Change starts with you and me!

“While government has beenworking hard to actively put theright policies in place to createjobs, this is a national call to busi-nesses and citizens to stand to-gether to play their part. What weneedtomakeclear is thatProudlySouth African will not directly becreating 93 000 jobs, but will berallying all state organs, busi-nesses and citizens around jobcreation.

“The 93 000 Jobs for MandelaDay campaign is therefore justone way we can unite as a nationin the fight against unemploy-ment and to try to achieve greatthings for our country and forMadiba,” says Mkhize.

Companies and South Africanswanting to make an official com-mitment to the campaign can re-gister for the campaign via theProudly SA website: www.proud-lysa.co.za and become a friend ofthe Proudly SA “93 000 Jobs forMandela Day” Facebook page.

Proudly South African will bemonitoring and communicatingprogress with regards to this phe-nomenal job creations drive.

Daar is tans 12 ka-meras in Neethling-, Coetzen-

Rabie bly oor 2de plekABRIE BURGER

marathon.

Dit was’n baie lekker wedvaart vir my. Ek hetmyhuiswerkvooraf goedgedoenenalleshet baie goed verloop.”
